Tell me what point you are up to.

The file to run the game is Q.BAT ... just double-click it.

Then look forward to more problems and yell out :D

but what exactly do i go into

You've got the files downloaded and unzipped? You've installed OLDDOS?

Ok, so go to the folder and dbl-click Q.BAT

That brings up the program and the main menu.

The game is written in an old programming language and DOES NOT support the mouse. You need to navigate using your numeric keypad, ensure NumLock is ON.

First, add the path where you put Qooty. Use the instructions back on the first post of this thread to work out what DOS calls your path.

Then go to the menu, naviagte (with numeric keypad with NumLock on) to where it says 'ALTER PATH'. When you wish to select an option like this, just navigate to it and press {enter}.

A new screen comes up where you type in your path as you found it described by the check noted above (what DOS calls your path).

(If you've never used DOS before I understand this might be a bit confusing)

Once your path is in, you then go to the SETUP LEAGUE : Make League option and press {enter}

A screen comes up where you enter the name of your league, and then a short version (DOS works in 8-letter file and directory names, Windows in fact does the same, but has fancy stuff which allows us to only see the descriptions, which can be much longer. You probably didn't need to know that, I over-explained).

Once your league is created you will return to the main menu.

Now you need to add teams.

Go to SETUP LEAGUE : Make League again, but before pressing {enter}, use the left and right arrow keys on the numeric keypad. You will find that each of those menu options are actually submenus, using these keys will rotate through all the options under SETUP LEAGUE ... 'make league' is only one of them.

You'll see New Team, Edit Team, Transfer, etc etc. You need 'New Team'. Press {enter} when that is selected.

Up comes a screen where you get to choose which league you want the team to be in. As you will see, there will only be one choice, because you've only created one league so far. (Yes, you can create more than one league, handy if you want to have a reserves comp as well, and also handy to handle supplementary lists; a non-playing league which is just a repository for players to be shifted in and out of teams due to issues like injury, suspension, omission).

Once you select the league, you then are able to add a team. When you do so, it will require the player names. You canput in your supported footy team, your local team, your mates' names, or just some quick alphabetical characters if you want to just stuff around for a start. Some people like to have their supported team (Collingwood or Richmond etc, but omit their most hated player and put their own name in, simple fun). They are entered from back pocket to 2nd interchange. Its an old game so it only has space for 2 interchanges. The way it should have stayed anyway, none of this namby-pamby stuff :D

Once your team is in, you can actually play a match, though it will be two teams of players with the same names, it'll look odd :)

So it might be more fun to add at least a second team.

Then to test it out, return to the main menu, and choose the top option : PLAY FOOTY : execute (execute just means its not a submenu, there's no sub-choices, just a choice to execute the main menu choice).

Once you do that, you'll go back to the choose league screen. Choose the one league you've created. Then choose the two teams you want to play the match (presumably there's only two to choose from at this stage, but you choose which order, ie the first team you choose is the home team).

Then (from memory) you get asked if you want a commentary file. Choose yes. It hurts nothing to run it and adds a text file that shows all the running commentary as you've seen pasted in these game threads for the Sweet FA competition.

Then (from memory) you'll be up to the displayed team lists in their positions. you have an option to choose a round number down below. Just leave it at 00 (or whatever the closest to blank is, can't remember), and press {enter} again.

Then, this time only, you'll get a long string of "this is the debut match for ...." for each player. That's cause its their first game cause you only just invented them.

One more {enter} or {any key} (can't remember) and the match commences.

Watch it, enjoy it (its a spectator sport game, you don't control the players) and grab a beer (or raspberry cordial if you're under age :D ). you can toggle between players showing their current scores with the spacebar, and between showing the time or just which quarter you're in with the 'T' key. Can't remember if the 'T' is case-sensitive. Both functions take a moment to take effect, I think they wait until just after the next mark taken. The spacebar has three options but I can only remember two of them; no info (just player name) and players score alongside truncated player name.

You can quit at any time by pressing {Esc}, this just pretends that the game has finished, it shoots you to the end of the match displays.

Then you get a player stats and quarter by quarter scores screen. After that, a player clanger v winner ratio, with votes at the bottom. After that, if the function has been selected through the Setup screen (can't remember whether its defaulted to be on or not), it might check to see if any high scores have been set. Of course, if it is, every record will be broken because its the first match.

Then you return to the main menu, and can take advantage of the other options such as player stats, bests, fluctuation graphs, win/loss records, etc. just have a look around and get a feel for what it offers.

Note : Ladders will NOT be updated. You just played a scratch match. For Ladders and Fixtures to be in place, you need to "SET CONFIG" (SETUP LEAGUE menu). This locks teams in (can't add new teams anymore) for the league and creates a fixture. It also starts taking into account how match scores affect the ladder.

The best thing to do is use the SETUP screen (GAME SETUP : Setup) with scratch matches, set to not save player stats. After all, stats from scratch matches shouldn't count!

Then, when you've added a whole league full of teams, and SET CONFIG, then you turn on the stats-saving options (player stats, game stats, ladder stats, update bests), so that they are recorded when an actual season is in full swing.

Also, there is an option for manually dragging and moving players. I don't use it but its there in the SETUP screen. I think, when its set to 'User Changes' on, you can enforce these moves by pressing, umm, trying to remember, 'D' to drag and ... umm, shaky on this one, probably 'M' to move!

Hopefully this helps!

Ok hehe ... umm well at http://www.footypedia.com/qooty/ you should follow the instructions for 'downloading for the first time'.

There are two files for that option : OLDDOS.EXE and Qooty.V3.zip

For the OLDDOS.EXE file, left-click it, don't right-click and choose save target as. It seems to bugger up when its done that way.

Download it to C:\ (your root directory), and then go find it in your My Computer or Explore functions, and dbl-click it, this should expand it so that you've got all your Old DOS commands available now. This program just enables programs like Qooty to work, its like installing Microsoft Office so that when someone sends you a word document, it will work. (Except QBasic is an outdated, simple, programming language, not a state-of-the-art publishing suite!)

With Qooty, download it to whatever folder seems appropriate for you. Make one if you wish, eg C:\Qooty or whatever.

Then go to that folder (eg C:\Qooty), and look for a file called Q.BAT

Dbl-click that file to run Qooty.

...

Try these, and if it stuffs up, tell me exactly what and where the problem occurred.

i habe no idea what u r saying mobbenfuhrer about that DOS stuff

Its just like using any other application except its an older system.

Mind you, I'm trying to teach myself VBasic at the moment, If I can get past causing the program to hang continually, I might be onto a winner.

Here's my first effort : http://www.footypedia.com/dloads

PS : To avoid a bug, don't try to move the game screen while its playing  :(

Update : to avoid being bugged, don't bother playing it at all. It doesn't work ... yet.

(Found out it has absolute references so won't play on your computer unless you're lucky enough to have exactly the same other files on yours that I have on mine. Will get back to yers someday with a working copy!)

Questionnaire

Hi guys,

I'm a uni student with the university of Technology, Sydney. (UTS)

I'm currently conducting market research on the sponsorship of AFL teams and I need 250 respondents on order to finish this study and get my university degree.

So if any anyone would be so kind as to go to this web site and fill in my questionnaire I would be really grateful:
