Dry Rot, if the media ^ alartmists weren't beating it up, then most people wouldn't be going to the Doctors or hospitals. The hysteria is causing the problem, not the bloody flu.

the local school here is closed due to swine flu.

That's why I couldn't go to the footy, because I had a cold, or maybe the swine flu. Campbell, more than two people die of the ordinary flu every year, Doctors have said that this is a mild flu, the people who have died had other ailments as well.

I know that. Problem is what it could turn into. Also the other conditions is not normally a concern for people of their age with normal flu.

Funny thing I noticed on the train today. This woman starts a fit of coughing and this older Asian couple swap glances then get up and move to the opposite end of the carriage. Next stop they get off and I can see them get back on the next carriage!

Good point, see my post on the previous page. It seems the jury is out on that point, depending upon mutations.

Agree that the number of actual infections far exceed that known.

Nah, wasn't swine flu. Believe I caught it on a plane though.
Went to the Dr's and was checked out once I felt the flu like symptoms.

The main thing with swine flu is that for most people it will be mild, for those with existing medical conditions it may be more of a threat.

The best thing people can do is not panic but just take basic hygiene precautions such as washing hands, covering your mouth when you cough/sneeze etc.

To borrow a saying from lil Johnny, be alert and not alarmed.

If you show flu like symptoms, stay home from work or school.

Hmm. I wouldn't exactly describe being obese and having diabetes as "healthy", in any sense of the word.

So I went down to my GP today because I'm having flu like symptoms and a couple of guys at work are off with the same.

There's a sign up that says I need to go to Dandenong Flu centre for treatment. So I go there at 11. Sign up there that says they open at 1. So I go home then go back to Dandenong at 1.

I get in there and they say they can't do anything for me because I don't have any pre-existing conditions. I say I can't go to the doctor because he won't see anyone with flu symptoms. They say there isn't any doctors at the flu centres (specifically designed to treat flu I'll add) anymore, just two nurses. The nurse says she can't prescribe anything or do anything, and they aren't testing for Swin Flu anymore as of about 3 weeks ago.

So now I'm quarantined for a week without even knowing what is wrong with me.

The lack of perspective knows no bounds and now that BF's resident card carrying "warm fuzzy healthcare worker" has jumped on board this thread should really go down hill.

Since when has being 5 NOT been a factor increasing the risk of complications from flu?

How many 5 year olds are hospitalised annually due to flu?

How possible is it that someone, at 5, has an undiagnosed pre-existing condition?

why thanks for your informed opinion kp. i was saying it may be a good indea for tasers in situations like ed, when you have a violent person drug affect or mentally ill, causing havoc in the ed , with the ability to immediatley cause harm to others ie patients, staff and themselves. that IF security or pilce used taser it could help in that situation.

and low an dbehold they are thinking of bringing it in. and i am the psycho.
kp, try coming down to my work on a friday night, maybe with your young sick child, and see the entertainment we have. and pray like hell that one of those druggies or mentally ill people, dont attack you or your child. because it does happen. it happens so fast.
and you cant have 10 security people rostered, just in case we have a code.

Surely, your education extends to the fact that children and in particular young children (and 5 is young) ARE in fact in the normal risk group for deaths from flu? You know that surely?

Typically, flu causes most deaths in the elderly - that said, the elderly also die more in general so its hardly a telling stat - when you get old something will kill you and with flu as the 7th leading cause of death (in the US) its a chance.

It hasnt killed many people, it has killed very few without an underlying health condition and, as we saw in the Americas, many who were originally claimed to have no underlying condition were subsequently found to have in fact had one.

You assume, typically, that in all things health you are some sort of guru.... which clearly on this issue you aren't.

incorrect there. at least we have a health management plan where I work for all suspected cases, so yes I am aware of the actual facts of the disease, and the treatment etc.

glad you can read and sift through what you think is the relevant information about the disease. a little selective information can be very damaging imo.
