With all this doom and gloom around, and so many people saying that our season is gone and CC himself declaring a "mini short term crisis," peoples' expectations are so high for this year after the "success" and promise shown last year.
I have been having a bit of a think and comparing last year to this year and have come up with a few things (sorry in advance if these have already been pointed out).
Last year, there were 3 games Freo played that were decided by less than a kick, Brisbane - 3pts, Crows - 1pt and the Roos - 1pt. As we all know, Freo were on the right side of those margins in all 3 of those games. When you think about it, not much was needed to be different in those games and we could have lost all 3, leaving us with 11 wins and out of the 8 instead of 14 and finishing 5th.
This year, there have been 4 close games, we have been on the wrong side of all but one (Richmond) of the close games where we were in front at either at 3/4 time or at some stage of the last 1/4. These games were Port, Melb, and the Roos.
In my opinion, winning all 3 of those games last year flattered Freo's ladder position to a degree and dare I say it, "flukey". Looking back, that was found out in the elimination final and we finished a more realistic position in 7th.
This year we are in touch to finish anywhere between 6th to 10th and with a better percentage than last years as we are yet to be flogged in any game. A top 4 finish this year was always going to be optimistic in my mind when you look at last year from this point of view.
This year is by no means a right off....yet.
