I'll do a small write up; a few of the players that stood out and could come into calculation for our picks this year.
Chargers: (I'll exclude Viney as I've done a write up in the Viney thread, suffice it to say myself and a couple of neutral mates were all over his game)
Adam Tomlinson:
- A really versatile 192cm defender (can no doubt play key forward and mid as well), great agility and speed. He had a really good game (marred by one critical mistake late in the game unfortunately); he took players on, used the ball well, defended and competed excellently in the air and provided some really good rebound from defence. Looks a good pickup. (Think Cale Morton with a heart and confidence in some ways.)
Toby Greene:
- Was really solid around the contest and used the ball well by foot generally. Seemed very fit and very committed to the cause. Has good pace, but is definitely more of an inside ball winner. Probable first rounder.
Seb Gotch:
- Struggled early, as many small forwards do, but he got involved in some fantastic pieces of play as well as taking a couple of really strong 'pack' marks. Which is quite amazing for someone of his size (172cm's and light). He has a bit of x-factor, but probably isn't as quick as you would want for someone his size. He has footy smarts though. Rookie choice looms.
Sandringham:
Ben Darrou:
- Was fantastic in defense for Sandi; took multiple intercept marks, spoilt very well and distributed the ball cleanly. We should give him a shot with a mid range pick IMO, with Warnock gone another key defender should be given a spot on the list. At the least he will provide some competition for the younger brigade.
Jackson Paine:
- It's well documented that I'm a fan of Jackson, and he played a very nice game to add to that. He presented strongly, tackled and chased well and used the footy cleanly. Unfortunately not much of his contested marking was on display, as he was used in the midfield for a fair portion of the game (At 193cm's and 87kg's). This is a guy who could very easily slot into our forward-line next year.
Jackson Coleman:
- A 196cm, 19 year old prospect. Has a great pair of hands and leads to the right places. He would be outstanding value to us as a late - rookie pick.
Sandringam also had a small forward who was incredibly lively, red headed.
He looked a very likely type, very similar to a certain S. Milne. When he got involved in the game something good happened. Would be available late - rookie.
As a side note I was sitting in clear view of Connolly, Schwab and Prendergast. The players I felt sparked the most conversation between the three were (apart from Viney);
1. Paine
2. Greene
There were hints of solid conversation at Tomlinson and Gotch as well.
Prendergast and a member of his recruiting team stuck around for the VFL Grand Final as well.
