Pretty sure they will play Reid as soon as they can. They did last year. Will need a few games as you say.

No to Laverde in the midfield. He is a flanker. We have just managed to get a midfield full of midfielders , although yesterday it did not show . No more converted flankers masquerading as midfielders. Keep Laverde in defense.
He's also quite good there . Like his blue collar, no self preservation approach to defending

I hope they're settled on defence for Reid. I think if we start to intergrate him in Stewart and Laverde need to stay for protection. Thats 3 out of 7 defenders. The other 4 for me would be Ridley, Kelly, Hind and McGrath. Id have Redman as next choice which makes 8. Makes things with Heppell difficult if he cant play any other role.

I think Bruno’s point (that bjchan was responding to) was for Laverde to play as a negator on Dangerfield.

Iirc we had Ambrose doing a job like that on Dustin Martin one year, or maybe it was Nat Fyfe? Tagged him out of the midfield and they moved him forward and Ambrose went with him since he was a defender by trade anyway.

Laverde could maybe do that on the occasion when such a player needs shutting down for a quarter here or there. Not to play as a mid but just to settle things down when the momentum swings like that.

The other one that might benefit is Perkins just for the chance to watch a master at work.

Still a no for me. Doubt he could run with Danger for more than a quarter.
No flankers in the midfield.

It hurts us when Stringer isn't there doing his bullocking work at the center bounce. I like Merrett, Parish and Magrath and I think they're all very gifted... but it feels like we're missing something. Maybe Hobbs can become that point of difference around the ground that we need.

Bruno has an obsession with Laverde playing midfield. That's all it is.

I think my view on this is pretty clear and basically has been since trade period in 2017.

The midfield doesn't work and on all available significant evidence, that is finals, it gets brushed aside like its part of a training drill. I can't see how it works.

We set up to capitalise on the 25% of the time the centre bounce breaks or the ball breaks for us generally. The 50% of the time the ball is in dispute is the problem and there is no answer.

It's a cultural thing, part of a spell the supposedly good players cast over a team. It results in dropping Dylan Clark in preparation for trench warfare in a final against the Dogs in Tassie.

What good is having AA midfielders if the midfield is next to useless?

It will be interesting to see how it tracks this year, particularly as our stat merchants continue to rack up aimless possessions to the applause of the industry.

too much of the same type in our midfield, all around 178-183cm and about 80-85kg's. I'm not saying everyone needs to be 192/90 but when big bodied teams(CATS for example) are smashing in and cleaning winning the ball and burning us off for centre clearances there's no plan B because we dont have the bodies or the mind set to execute a plan B...... I cringe when i see Merrett, Parish and Shiel all attending the centre square together, none of them have a defensive mind set, none are lightning quick and they're all the size of a 10 yr old girl.

But not all is completely lost, Stringer changes the dynamics of the centre square for us and Langford helps but he's by no stretch a clearance beast. Just need Perkins to put 10kgs on by next weekend and we'll be right(can somebody please give the man some cake!?!)

Need a Boak type IMO.

We did miss Snelling though.

It's not that at all.

There isn't anyone else on the list with the maturity. Voss might be that player.

I'm taking about, a Stringer style burst on ball and then playing as an out number mid from half forward. I did say that.

It's basically what Ambrose did in 2015, I think it was.

It really is. You've had this obsession since he came onto the list. It isn't happening, get used to it.

is it the personnel or just the set up? Because parish, merrett, stringer and to a lesser extent mcgrath were flying last year so you would assume bringing shiel and caldwell in would add to it. But watching the game live on sat it felt like parish and mcgrath were back to their worst, shovelling off panic handballs at all costs, and I barely saw caldwell near the contest till the game was over.
It was clear from the Elimination final that the midfield coaching team had a lot of work to do over summer to figure out the best use of each of the guys so its very disappointing that it looks like theyve gone backwards over the preseason. hopefully its just a one off and they will start to gel soon.

You'd be better served if you just took a deep breath before telling poster what they are thinking.

What it shows is the projection in your interpretation/analysis.

I specifically said I'd use him as an outnumber player from half forward and even throw him in when Danger is running riot. That's not midfield.

I can hold multiple and alternative views on something at the same time. You should try it.

For example: I can have once though Laverde could be Fyfe-like in the middle; can have conceded long ago that's not going to happen; can think it would be interesting to see whether the confidence taken from asserting himself in defence would translate to improved performances forward; and then also think, completely independently of any expectation that he would be Fyfe-like, that the more than a little work he has done in training and at VFL level in the centre, over his 7 completed years in the system, combined with his evolution as a defender and his size and power would make him the best placed to add some much needed physical and defensive substance to a midfield and around the ball.

Except ant pretty much nailed it right away;

Doubt he could run with Danger for more than a quarter.

Doesn't have the tank Ambrose did.

That's a disagreement about whether Laverde is suitable.

We can fight about that until the cows come home.

Dangerfield is one of the harder matchups in the league, you need the size to stand him, and the tank to run with him. Very few players have both.

That's why Martin / Petracca / Dangerfield are so unstoppable, the combination of size, speed, strength and tank isn't something most teams have.

It's at least part personnel.

Who's the last premier, or even team that's made a grand final without a big-bodied mid? We don't have one and for whatever reason refuse to address it.

I like/rate most of our mids, it's just a horrible mix.

To be fair, we did go after Dunkley - but for whatever reason, we seem to have totally avoided that type of player since.
