Generally theres considerably less opportunity, defenders are expected to spoil and bring the ball to ground.

Traditionally yeah, but the GREAT defenders are the ones who take the contested marks. In the end, we're in NAB Challenge, I see no reason why it can't be at least tried.

Cloke. Cloke should be played down back.

I'll say this until the day he retires.

He has all the physical attributes to make a fantastic centre half back. His field kicking is more than adequate for the role and with a kick as booming as his could launch attacks from CHB with ease. We also would improve our goal kicking accuracy as a side considerably and our forward line would become less predictable.

HAving said that, I think Marsh with some more weight on him could be a really could backman long term.

We had the 7th ranked defense (average points conceded) and the second best one on one defensive record of any team. (Only lost 24% of 1on1 contests). Our tall defense even without Reid, who isn't a defensive minded player anyway, was pretty good.

Id say we have to improve against small and medium sized forwards as well as our transitional defense which was well down the list (12th) then worrying too much about our tall defenders.

Where we will and have missed Reid is clearing the ball out of defense and using that to attack accurately.

Hypothetically lets say he did play down back. Why do you think he would get murdered Jmac.
He has a fantastic tank. He is a big guy and very strong. Body on body not many could match him. For his size he is not exactly a lumbering type, has some speed.
It's never going to happen but if it did why are you certain it would be a failure.

Doesnt have a particularly good turning circle
Not particularly great at ground level.
Will not be able to take contested marks which is his greatest strength
No run and carry
Not known as a handballer
No right foot
Not a reliable enough kick to clear the ball to a teammate
Nobody to replace him in the forward line

If he doesnt mark the ball in defence and spot up a teammate with the kick he'll be close to useless

The topic is KPD and how we are all of a sudden low on depth, my argument suggestion our best defender is out with an injury, if you take any other teams best KPD out there really thin of worse of than us.

It's not his speed that's a worry it's his acceleration. In the ford line he can just push off his opponent to get space but in the backline he'll be playing catch up on the lead. And not to mention our forwards ins turns to shit without him.

The main reason is that he has played his whole career up forward, it's all he knows. I'm not convinced Cloke would have the ability to learn a new role.

Good to see you back Matty

Mentioned it somewhere else already but is moving Pendles further back an option? We did it at the end of 2015 and it wasn't that bad. We have more quality in the midfield to compensate for the loss of Pendles there

We will try both Pendles and Sidey in different positions over the new few seasons. Sidey has been seen across half back more then Pendles so far, but there have been a few ocassions where we've seen Pendles down back too.

It's worth a shot if Reid can't play.

Langdon, Maynard and Marsh are the three we need to get games in off half back of course too.

Worked for Tarrant. Whether Buckley has the tactical mind reinvent a player is yet to be seen under his coaching regime.

Hate to break this to you but Tarrant and Cloke are not the same person.

MM didn't had that mind either. Tarrant left as fwd and came back to us as a defender. Are you implying we should send Cloke to WA for an apprenticeship?

I may be Robinson Crusoe here but I am with THATSGOLD in that our talls our are biggest ? this year.

Brown = 2015 only first full season. Let's not mention his twins year in 2015.

Frost = I like the kid but coming of a minor knee OP in 2015 ?

Marsh = 2 really bad hammies.

Reid = Reid

Very difficult to have confidence in the tall timber as suggested by TG.

Not sure the angst against him is justified in this case.

I did suggest in another post we might at well have/try a back up in White during these pretend games.

Our big man stock is not as good as some of you may think.

Why don't you list the past injuries of ALL our best 22 and as you have here.
Why focus on the backline - just to support TG?
It is totally irrelevant and and meaningless analysis.

You guys are naive enough to think that past injuries are a PERFECT predictor of future injuries - that's just pure rubbish.

Really ? Why don't you list the players he has tried to reinvent and failed?

He tried it with Dawes. Didn't go so well but at least he tried. Fas played in the backline too for a while.
