Very sad, was one of my favourite players back in his first stint, not to say that I don't like him now obviously.

Still remember crying when he got traded. Hopefully the boys can rally and win him that elusive flag. Good luck in the future.

I firmly believe that when a team is in premiership contention that an announcement such as this should be left until season's end. It is a team game and the focus should not shift to an individual finishing their career. A "do it for Taz" type mentality never works.

I remember Taz retreating from the AFL to Mildura, unwilling to forsake his country town lifestyle for the AFL.

I worked for a couple of years in Mildura when it was a boozy, blokey place boasting the longest bar in the southern hemisphere in the men's only workingman's club. Around 1976, women were permitted in the bar for the first time, and breathalysers began to threaten the sanctity of a man's drunken-drive home. Yet even then the town offered a comfortable lifestyle, and it was big enough not to be claustrophobic. For locals, the 600km trip to Melbourne was a reminder of why you liked country life with its relaxed feel and pace.

Football was at the core of a young man's life and the town boasted a football competition featuring a number of teams. Back in the 70's before the draft, country areas were zoned to certain VFL clubs, and Mildura as part of Sunraysia, was Richmond territory.

A few decades down the years, Taz would have felt that life was pretty much complete in Mildura. He played for South Mildura though he was to move to Bendigo in 96 on an AFL scholarship. When Taz fled Collingwood and went home, Eddie chased him up and brought him back.

While playing for the Collingwood reserves, Taz got around 45 possessions one day playing a midfield role, and I always hoped that he'd make his name as a prolific ball-gatherer. Injuries determined that he would play in a set position rather than follow the ball.

Tazza's career was tarnished by his social life both at Collingwood and Fremantle. I was actually OK about him leaving, as Reid and Medhurst seemed a good exchange for a wayward kicking forward in decline. Besides, Taz seemed a bad influence on Ben Johnson, or visa versa, and it seemed wise to move him on.

When Taz was suspended 2 or 3 games for social antics of an unsavoury nature at Fremantle, we seemed vindicated in trading him interstate. Dean Solomon, another loose-cannon, went to Fremantle with Taz, and I figured Tarrant would take up with him where he left off with Ben Johnson and his career would just fizzle out in the west.

However, reinvented as a defender, Taz returned to us a changed person and filled a hole in defence. He seemed over the injuries that plagued his years at Collingwood, well, until this year anyway! Unfortunately, just as we are used to him being around again, he has called it quits.

I wonder where Taz will go next in life? Football has helped him mature, given him a bit of backbone and direction. I'll miss him.

he was a favourite at freo too. amazing the amount of love he gets for such an unassuming bloke. thanks taz.

Went to Bendigo Senior Secondary College and one of the stories which was told by a teacher was in Chris Tarrants year 12 English exam all he wrote in big letters was COLLINGWOOD. Will be missed. I love that footage of when Eddie was commentating and he yells out Tarrant!!!! before he even leapt!

Was right behind the goals when he kicked that. Reckon its the only time someone has crowd surfed at a AFL game haha
How much did that kick scrape in by? The umpire was right on the goal post and even the crowd was subdued because they weren't sure.

One of my favourite players of all time, but a career of what could have been.

Had all the tools to be a absolute champion, although even if he'd behaved during his early years he may not have turned out that way.

But he'd definitely have a premiership and if he doesn't get one this year I'll be very sad, it's impossible not to love the bloke.

Been really REALLY struggling to hold tears back watching Taz highlights.

Especially Mars' goodbye video from when he was traded.

He was born in 80 as well, so I feel like I've almost 'grown up' with him through his Collingwood career. I wasn't exactly happy we traded him, but at the same time, I expected it to happen. I even told Josh Fraser at the time I knew it was coming.

As much as I loved Taz at the time, he needed a new environment.

But I don't know if I've ever been happier as a Collingwood supporter (outside of the flag) than when he came back.

I love him so much. Yes homo. Both my wife and I would cheat on each other with Taz.

Hopefully another reason to drop nathan Brown - no logic I know, just want to get this one done

Why use this forum to bag another player?

Yeah we had no idea until he started walking to the middle of the goals then we went nuts

Cheers and love ya Taz. I really hope they can win a flag for you this year.

Need one last screamer from the great man and one last "TAAARRRRRRAAAAAAAAAAAAAANNNTTT!!" roar from the crowd.
Would be fitting!

Well done on a great career Taz, I hope we can get you that elusive premiership and that life after football treats you well.

I was really hoping some of these stories would get some airplay after this announcement. There's a couple that paint him in the absolute best (my opinion only), absolutely ripping light.

I'll edit this one for a bit more accuracy (I was sitting one seat back, one row left) from the great man during said exam.

Half a dozen or so of us walk up from the library (normal morning ritual was to read all the sports pages in all three papers) to the gym. Mood more than jovial. Find assigned seats. Sit down, get bearings of where each other is. The great man puts up his hand, tries to get the invigilators attention, and asks the question (forget the exact words) "Can I go now? / How long do I have to stay here?" Stern response was "you must stay here for a minimum of xx minutes" (15 or 30 from memory).

More stifled laughter ensues. The great man tried, a number of times, to write the theme song on his VCE English paper. Failed. Didn't study hard enough, didn't know it word for word. Ended up just writing COLLINGWOOD. Sees minimum time to stay has expired. Grinning from ear to ear, tucks his chair in and walks out of the gym. Prick!
