Clean, hard-at-it, takes marks against taller opponents, good skills, bit of pace.

I actually see him and Breust as similar style players, some good smaller book-ends for years to come, I reckon.

One thing about Duryea's game that's good is his work in 1:1 marking contests. Sure he can be exposed for pace at times, but the defense aspects of his game are very underrated.

That bump on Kane Mitchell in Round 14 was a beauty.

How about the tackle on Boak in the Prelim?? Goal saving tackle. And we all know what another Port goal would have meant!

I like these video players reviews, much better than the Clarko written reviews from a couple of years ago.

They could have included his tackle on Blicavs in the QF as well, that was great stuff on a bigger opponent, showed a bit of mongrel too.

I agree the Blicavs tackle was a ripper! Had to use all his might & weight to bring the big guy down! Cheered at the time but did make me smile the effort it took to drag him down watching the replay.

I reckon Taylor is tracking along exactly as the coaches hoped. Keeps up the hard work and improving and he'll be a fixture in our side for many years to come.

Yep, definitely improved. Needs to realise he belongs and show a bit more leadership though. I know he's young, but should shadow Whitecross for a while. I wonder in a few years time whether he might actually move up the ground a little, maybe on a wing.

Clarko has taught him well....more versatile!... He plays cricket too....
And he's the resident hair dresser.

Although the jury is out on the numbers he gave to the squad in the week leading up to the GF. Wasn't a big fan of Puop and Gunner's sprazdoos.

This guy is a favourite of mine. Love his attack on the man and ball, has pace, a great leap and most importantly, no fear. Was a surprise last year as an understudy to Goo, was a little shaky early this year when he tended to rush his kicks and became unbalanced. Like Langford he tended to grow stronger through the year, and was very effective spelling Hill on a wing at times. Long term small defender locked in for a decade IMO.

It will be interesting to see the make up of our back-line next year with the arrival of Frawley. For mine Duryea (and his role) will be important to negate the growing number of dangerous opposition small forwards - McGlynn, Wingard, Ballantyne, Motlop, Betts, Thomas, Matera to name a few. It's also likely O'Rourke will be given a run in a similar role during the season so barring injury to our other defenders Spanghar will probably be the tall squeezed out. Comments?

Just watching replay Rd 8 against Sydney!! Plenty of leadership on display. I recall Duryea & Langford got in the best.
Ratten also declared him a future captain during the year so definitely not lacking in that area. Shiels Breust Stratton Rioli Hill Smith Gunston as well - we ooze class & leadership. Hawks are in such a great place!!

There's no one to compete with for that small defender spot either at the moment, so even more entrenched.

Speaking of which, anyone think Webster could be a future small defender now that he's elevated, or is his kicking too iffy to put him in the back half?
Would love him to be a defender but he is a premium pressure forward in waiting. His kicking similar to poppy's is no where near where it needs to be to play in defense. He needs to stay on the park this year. I would hate for him to be another Rioli. His hamstrings seem a bit iffy.

Always admire and respect players who play with injury but just soldier on.... never complain, never explain.
Doc should now be of the mindset that its HIS SPOT to lose , not to fight for, .... if that's his view I can see him starting to grow even further and expect to see him really explode this year.

Not technically small but he is competing with Litherland for place in the side as a rebounding defender.
With Birchall and Suckling, not sure why we'd play 3 rebounding defenders? Litherland would be closer to competing for Stratton/Gibson position I think. Looking back he was in the side in replace of Strats or even Lake most of the time.

Our backline is fairly eclectic though, in the GF didn't have anyone playing small, which may have something to do with how Sydney lined up but we also have the luxury of Hodge or Burgers which means there was never any trouble of being swamped.

Isn't he more of the manic crazy small forward?

HBD do tell regarding the Doc's malady?

Future is bright for this kid. Was just re-watching the QF and noticed this wonderful smother by Duryea that leads to a Gunston goal. It's a champagne play that really showcases our future in Duryea, Hill and Gunston. I love the way he just cannonballs into McIntosh after he has laid that smother and keeps his centre of gravity low enough that he rides the bump whilst barely losing his balance.

Always thought of him as the Goo replacement. Thought he lost his way a little early in the year, but by seasons end was on track again to take that place. Best part is, he is doing his apprenticeship in the best side in the comp and learning from the Guns around him. Will be a jet in a couple of years if he keeps going on this trajectory

2009 proved to be quite a profitable trade/draft period with the additions of Gibson, Burgoyne, Duryea, Stratton and Suckling (rookie promotion). Grimley may yet add to that. Really only dipped out on Hooper and Williams.

duryea is our back pocket and should be for the whole year, i was off him for a long period of last year thought he was making poor decisions and would drop simple marks but he has come good, very similar to goo good skills and hard as a cats head , who he makes room for is tough i'd like to see burgoyne predominately play fwd/mid next year and only 10-15 games so thats one option and suckling will need to play much better then last year to keep his spot

duryea (lake only plays in big games ) stratton

birchall frawley gibson
