Good lesson for the kid, and i applaud Thompson for sticking with him and giving him some valuable "classroom" time. If you want to prepare for life after Scarlo, Dasher and Tommy, then these games and situations are exactly when the kids need to be thrown to the wolves.

I know it may sound like an obvious statement but he needs to work harder in the gym and eat more.

Some guys are hard gainers but Harry is just too skinny and obviously doesn't push himself hard enough in the gym.

Mackie gets away with it to a degree because he's a runner, but Taylor needs bulk or he will always struggle against the bigger opponents.

Spot on. It was brilliant that Thompson gave him the opportunity and then held his nerve and stuck with him when Hall started to dominate thus giving Taylor the valuable experience. :thumbsu:

We cannot say what the future holds for Taylor, but this is the kind of conditioning that will give him every opportunity to become the next generation of Geelong defender. :)

That's a bit harsh on a first year player, critiquing his work ethic like that...

I think Harry himself has said that he was a late bloomer so hopefully a couple more professional pre-seasons will do him good...

He's 22yo give him a chance.

Harry worked as a bricky last year to try and bulk up, he isn't as skinny as people seem to think (BMI is 24.4 which is .6 away from overweight! :p) a big Blake-esque preseason next year and he'll be right.

Anyway, Harry would have learnt a lot from playing on Hall and this will be great for his development.

Alternatively when Scarlett, Milburn and Egan return he is the best 4th tall defender the AFL has ever seen. ;)

He did a great interview on SEN where he talked about that. He's been studying physiotherapy so he knew his stuff. He said for weight to height ratio he's in the optimum range and he wasn't interested in bulking up too much, more in focusing on strength work and learning to use the muscle he has better. More bulk means you become more cumbersome and since he actually has very good speed, it would make sense not to sacrifice this for bulk.

BMI is worthless for any athlete, fyi. My BMI is 40 but I'm not exactly what you'd call obese.

I know, hence the :p, my BMI is 18 or something but I'm not underweight at all! I just found it funny that he's almost considered overweight.

If you're doing any kind of weight training and are trim(like AFL players), BMI is useless.

If you are an armchair athlete with the beer gut, and multiple chins > http://www.nhlbisupport.com/bmi/ :D

Speaking of good lessons, did anyone notice Kirk was tagging Selwood last night? I think that would be the first time young Joel's been tagged, so that would be a good learning experience for the young fella. :thumbsu:

Wasn't Robert Walls a nob.....all he could do was have a crack at Taylor.

Like Hall hasn't torn many defenders a new one ever before.

Robert Walls you are a disgrace.

Looking at some of the swimmers in China , maybe he need more time in the pool not gym. Gees some of those girls are big.

For mine , I doubt anyone would call Scarlo a mountain , yet he is rarely out bodied. Its got a bit do with core strength and also knowing how to play the position against guys like Hall. It would be interesting how often he matches up against Mooney at training?

Another thing to remember is the way the game is now played it almost impossible to be a Mick Martin , Rutten type. Forwards will kick goals if given supply , the trick is to restrict supply. A player must be able to rebound and he does this well.

Just how smart a choice was it by Wells to get this guy. No Scarlo, Egan or Dasher and very little else that is close to ready in the V's.

My sentiments too.

I was hoping last night that Thompson would not move Harry off Hall but let him have an education. He can only get better with the experience.
However, I think that Harry has a very good future but it may very well be as the third tall in the backline and not as a KKP player.

dunno bout the idea of a genius coaching move - what other options were there?

What it shows is a gross lack of leadership from Tom Harley also. + it demonstrates the fact that Harley never has / will be a true key position defender. Harley's strength is not his disposal, yet he chose to play loose man in defense while Taylor(lighter/smaller) was left to take Hall all game. Taylor is a far superior kick to Harley also and could have been more damaging as that loose player.

I know I'll get flamed for suggesting so, but why does Harley shrug best opposition forwards? Especially in '08, soft. Never goes to them.... And why? It's not like he's terribly useful with his disposal when playing loose??

Scarlett is a massive out us... MASSIVE! I know his leadership is good, but Harley merely makes up the numbers in defense. He's too one dimensional and should have done the right thing by taking Hall when he was dominating us.

Good grief:rolleyes:

The rest of us know that Harley's role isn't to go one on one with the full forwards. I'm sure you do too.

Why do you persist with this character assassination of one of our fundamental players.

He didn't even have a bad game FFS. Where does it end with you?

Harley will be All Australian Captain this year.

End of story.

And what would have happened if the Swans got near us last night? Would Harley continue to earn cheap possessions while Hall gives us a bath? If your saying that Harley's spot in the team is as the loose player, he's EASILY got the worst disposal of any loose defender ever!!

It isn't. Milburn does that role usually, and does it magnificently, while Harley takes the 3rd or 4th best opposition forward and gets marks as the 3rd man to marking contests. Everyone is putting him in the votes purely for reason of possession count... pathetic...

Bloody hell martyk, did Tom Harley **** your gf or something?

Actually I thought the skipper was very good last night both with his leadership and going up/dropping back as the third man.

When it looked like Hall was going to run amok it was Harley's cool presence in defence and dropping back which was crucial. Surely you can see that Harley in that role is more important to the team rather than him taking a key position forward.

I can see that a loose man in defense has space to attack, therefore should have great disposal... Harley's is possibly the worst in the team(when Byrnes isn't there). No penetration with disposal + no run off half back either??? Whats the good of him loose?
