Vader - using facts to disagree with Crow-mo is known as "spin"

:D :thumbsu:

I like to run with the ladder approach to the average age stat. Group sides as if discussing contenders, cellar dwellers, middle of the road sides, so on. As in, your top 4 = old, 5th-8th = middle of the road, 9th-12th = younger end of the scale, 13th-16th = kindergarten. May as well. It is football after all.

Of course, the average age stat is misleading at the best of times. We have a cluster of very old footballers, and a cluster at the other end of the scale. A lack of top shelf quality sitting in that 25-29 sort of age bracket. But then kindergarten units have won flags. It's all pretty hit and miss.

Common sense says our age is going to drop over the next year or two as we wave goodbye to the likes of Doughty, and other victims of Shirley/Torney-style list management. You're a fool if you think we'll move any less than two of the oldies on at season's end. Highly doubtful that you'll see us drift into kindergarten territory but if we're not middle of the road now, we most definitely will be, if not a little younger, when we front up in 2011.

I'm not sure about the stats for our "best 22", but the average age of our team list hit a peak around 2006, before falling dramatically in 2007 and 2008. This year it's gone back up again slightly, due to the fact that most of our 2009 departures were from the younger end of the spectrum (Shirley being the only senior player who got delisted).

I would be very surprised if more than 2 of our 5 current veterans remain on the list in 2011. With a minimum of 3 (probably 4) set to depart at the end of the year, along with Hentschel (I don't even want to think about the possibility of losing Thompson as well), we're looking at dropping about 12 months off our average age - assuming the replacements are either current rookies or newly drafted teenagers. Bringing in mature aged players via trade would change the maths somewhat.

Ah, healthy debate. :thumbsu:

that's a little economical there. Mattner himself said he didn't want to go to Sydney when they first approached him. midway through the season.

but as he kept discovering he was on the outer, more and more sydney's wooing of him started to look attractive.

in the end he asked for a trade, but he didn't start from that position.

Given the debate was about Taylor being traded, I concede you are right. If Walker is approached by other clubs this year his position may indeed turn out to be very similar to Mattner's.

... you clearly showed we are one of the oldest. end of.

unless you have stats that show we are not 6th, then save your breath.

Can't see how you can be right that having 6th oldest list classifys us as one of the oldest lists unless you are using a simple dichotomy: 8 teams have the youngest lists, and 8 teams have the oldest lists, which seems an odd way to judge lists.

Splitting into 3 groups: 5 younger lists, 6 middle list and 5 older lists puts adelaide at the top of the middle group.

and one of the arguments for keeping the oldies around longer is because of the gap in our list where the 28-30 year olds would normally be

That is true, but how are we going to replace the oldies unless we start actually playing guys to develop them. Once the form dropped away of the side we are only prolonging the length of our rebuilding pain by refusing to move on and just hoping for replacements to appear through the SANFL system.

if you tune out the lemmings, sure.

OK, lets call it "older" if that somehow makes a difference.

the facts are after this long in charge, that is an incredibly disappointing result.

for all our youth focus, we remain, as always, one of the older teams. when we what we needed was to be was nothing of the sort.

Alright, if you know so much about the modern game then, please fill me in and inform me of what is so incorrect about that post I made?? I really don't think many here would disagree that is the way we have been using Walker and Burton... Burton has clearly taken Walker's spot in the structure of the side. How has it really happened then Mr. Expert of modern football??
Hint: use your eyes on where he matches up over the course of a game. Might be harder than you think.

Your reading comprehension is as bad as some of the crap you post.
:) Given my reading comprehension is actually OK... thanks.

He wasn't dropped because of a lack of current form, toughness and smarts (and definitely not kicking ability); he was dropped due to being too slow match-up wise - which I don't believe, hence me calling that reason bullshit.
Is that what you believe ? Stock club euphemism, they all do it. Kicking... self-evidently poor, watch a replay if you have to. Also, there's a recent post somewhere where someone got emailed back from the club in response to a query and form was mentioned.

That's the point I was making - if you're going to drop him because of form or attitude or effort, then say so; but don't pretend it's about match-ups when it doesn't appear to be.
Fair cop. I'd like to hear the facts too. All clubs do it to us, though. Surely you knew we're just mugs.

It's probably about looking after a young player... which many here on bigfooty don't seem to care about too much. :)
