I think the team tackling situation is correlated to the whole team gelling issue. Same goes for team defense. When you haven't played with a group much then you struggle to do anything as a unit.

You'd need some sort of tackle opportunity stat, it's probably not through more "wanting" and better tackling that those guys are all bunched together in similar numbers and just more of a reflection of them being around more situations where repeat tackling happens.
Yeah, I agree.

hard to quantify that though without reviewing all the games.

I think our turning over the ball a lot would influence our tackle stat as you can assume our players running forward of the play in hope of getting in the chain and losing their opponent.

Our defenders do a great job of keeping the scores respectable considering the ball is coming back in at high velocity. We really need to improve those defensive structures for the players that aren't getting involved in the scoring chain rather than ball watching.

I agree.

I think Murphy has been underrated due to being in a shit team.

Well the thought often expressed on this board is Gibbs is better than Murphy - Murphy is a class above Gibbs and is under-rated amongt footy supporters - Could have been better but has been injury plagued for the last 3 or 4 years.

The way Carlton set up behind the ball and the way they move the ball ( which is slow by AFL standards ) leads itself to higher tackle counts, especially by midfielders.

Pretty damning reading and something I'm struggling to justify.

Most of the players in the top 30 for tackles are midfielders and most I would consider ball winning midfielders.

We aren't a high clearance team so I would assume it would make sense if we are going to be second to the ball then we would at least be laying tackles.
