It seems every other board has had one of these threads all preseason. So I think we've done quite well to avoid it for this long. But with the preseason over, it's all about Round 1 now.

So what would your team look like?

b: van Berlo - McPharlin - Silvagni
hb: Duffield - Johnson - Broughton
c: Hill - Palmer - Fyfe
hf: Walters - Pavlich - Crowley
f: Mayne - Anthony - Ballantyne

r: Sandilands - Mundy - Lower

i: Bradley - Suban - McPhee - (Roberton)

e: Grover - Clarke - Crichton

Even with all the injuries, it is still difficult to pick a team mainly because of the structure. It wouldn't surprise me if Grover got a gig, to give us extra cover down back especially if someone like Retzlaff was to get a debut for Brisbane. But of course that would leave us quite tall, particularly as some of our running types might not be at full fitness.

I'd like to give Clarke a chance, but Bradley just offers more run and versatility. Which will likely be needed until we can get our full strength squad back. And unless we picked Grover, I don't think we could get away with having Johnson or Silvagni rucking. van Berlo is the other one who might not feature in all teams, but given Brisbane have a few small forwards, I'd go with van Berlo to keep the likes of Duffield and Suban away from the goal square.

Not as much speed or run on the bench as I would perhaps like, but we have to work with what we have. Roberton can play both tall and small, so he seems like a good substitute (I hate the substitute rule).

B- Silvagni Grover Suban
HB- Broughton McPharlin Duffield
C- Fyfe Palmer Hill
HF- Crowley Pavlich Walters
F- Mayne Anthony Ballantyne

Ruck- Sandilands Mundy McPhee

Int- Johnson Roberton Clarke (Lower)

Em - Michie Crichton VanBerlo

Assuming we don't suffer a first half injury Lower to come in at the 20 minute mark of the 2nd quarter for Clarke/Grover/Silvagni/Johnson/Anthony.

Don't know about anyone else, but I'm not for one moment suggesting Johnson plays on Brown. For starters, Brown will likely line up much closer to goal without either Bradshaw or Fevola. McPharlin would take Brown, given he is our best defender. While Silvagni would take Clark, with Johnson helping out the both of them in a floating/3rd tall role.

But having said that, that is one reason why I think we'll go in taller, with Grover playing in addition to both McPharlin and Silvagni.

Your all assuming DeBoer wont play,he looks fit and is training well, dont know why he hasnt fronted yet
There is no way Grover wont play and I dont why Anthony is a lock in for game one,so far he has shown nothing,Johnson or Keplar would be a better fit at the moment

With the injury to Mzungu yesterday. What is the chance of Mitchie getting a call up on the bench?

anthony has trained well form what i have seen and has certainly not been our worst in the preseason matches, bar last match. jack will and should play

Find this a little odd as well...

FWIW ST has him listed as missing week 1 also. Smoke and mirrors...?

Cant agree on Anthony KPR, Ive seen all the pre season games and you can count his disposals on one hand.
As for training Clarke,Mellington,Mitchie,Bollenhagen are training well and all have performed as well or better than Anthony and no one is saying that they are walk up starts

DeBoer's definately best 22 but he's short of a run and we have options for that role so he might end up spending a week or two in the WAFL. Crowley's hard to place now with McPhee as our number one run with player. Crowl's looked okay as a forward last year but that was before Walters stepped up and there isn't room for Walters, Mayne, deBoer, Ballantyne and Crowley in the front half.

Agree with you on Grover.

Being an experienced recruit works in a players favour. Croad, Tarrant and Dessie weren't dropped when they should have been and McPhee was in terrible form 3 or 4 weeks into last season. Dropping/omitting an experienced player who has just arrived at the club is an admission that recruiting them may have been a mistake and adds pressure for their return so Anthony is a sure thing for round one if fit IMO.

Your probably right about Anthony but it must be a kick in the guts to someone like Kep who has worked his guts out all pre ,perfomed well in the NAB games and then maybe gets overlooked by someone who so far hasnt shown a thing.
Anthony was carved up by Mckenzie yesterday and I dont think anyone would class Mckenzie as a top notch defender just yet

I think I basically only vary on Nick Lower - surely he wouldn't be top 18 material? Would think that they might go someone like Michie who has better kicking and can fill a range of gaps around the ground, or maybe even Bradley who can kick just as well but probably can also fit a number of gaps.

Duffield Grover Roberton
Suban McPharlin Broughton
Fyfe McPhee Hill
Crowley Pavlich Mayne
Ballantyne Anthony Walters
Sandilands Mundy Palmer

Int: Silvagni Johnson DeBoer
Sub: Michie

I think Lower will play, especially as guys like Mundy and Hill might be a little underdone and also if they decide DeBoer needs some actual match practice. But also think he will probably be one of the first out when we have a full list to choose from. But for now at least, he should fill a role.

Also, I can't see us going with Silvagni/Johnson as back up rucks. Aside from the last game, the whole preseason has been all about what Clarke/Bradley/Griffin offer in regards to versatility. Plus the talk of Clarke being ready to step up, just seems to be pointing towards two ruckmen rather than an undersized part timer.

I think Crichton will take Subans place.

Thats about right.

i hope lower gets a game he looks like a hard worker and a ball magnet.

I think viv minchi will play this year as well as mellington but the selectors may want to see how they go in the waafl at first. both look like they are capable of handling the step up to the big stage.

From what I have seen I'd say Lower is a certainty for round 1. Especially with all of these injuries. And out of our 3 national drafts picks I'd say Pitt and Michie are equally likely to get a game with Mellington a bit behind them.
