...finish work, jump in the car (that has only AM radio), and I hear this on the 3 o'clock news....:

Newsreader: "....to allow him to play out the last couple of years of his contract without the burden of leadership. Bell said that the 1999 premiership with the Kangaroos was a career highlight for him."

Bellie: "The premiership in 1999 was a highlight after I had experienced a loss in a Grand Final in 1998. I also felt more like I was an established member of the team."

End of news story.

Now I didn't hear the beginning of the story, so can anyone shed any light on this? Has Bellie called an end to his captaincy days? If so, it would seem like an odd time to do it... If not, what was the point of the story, given he's contracted till 2008 and 2007/08 are "the last couple of years of his contract".

Bellie is still "Da Man" as far as I can see, but I could see that with Pav out of contract next year, the time may be right (politically) to hand it over to him. I also believe Josh Carr would make a great club captain after Bell, but given he's already "come home", and we want to stop Pav from "going home", again, one would think that Pav would be a shoe-in. Will we have a new capitano in 2007?

Sounds like a tad of the Judd-factor where the club want to secure his services and not go east - so offer the captaincy.

In FFC case its Pav, hmmm not sure hey. I'd like to see Josh get it for his strong role at the club and onfield and is approachable during training. Whereas Pav [after reading that article in The Worst] feels the time is right for him to return to SA? We wouldn't want to lose Pav either - there have been days where FFC have won when he hasn't been the 'star' nor the impact on the game as oppositions tend to put 2 players on him.

Pav to be the Colonel and Josh to be right-hand man...??? Hmmmmmmm interesting

Pavlich will make a great successor to Bell.

Like Bell, Pav is not only inspirational, but would also handle the responsibility with similar grace. Carr's leadership has more of a lieutenants' feel to it. Every captain needs a lieutenant to do the dirty work that needs doing without getting too involved. Josh is excellent in that.

Josh Carr is leaps and bounds ahead of Pav in my opinion on the field and around the club. Pav may be in the publics eyes, but which is more important?

I guess I'm more asking has Belly handed it over, or was this just some sort of digging for something and reporting it out of context... or did I just not hear enough of it?

Bad timing either way really... :thumbsd:

Pav is probably the natural leader of the club; whereas Josh probably hasnt really done the hard yards for us yet.

Pav does seem to be leaning towards home from the amount of talk about it. But then I spose this year is probably as good a year for him to do it!

Gibbs and Gumby and a Jetta :D :D

Bell to offer up captaincy
Posted Sep 11, 2006 - 15:16 PM

Fremantle captain Peter Bell has revealed he intends to hand over the main leadership role to another player in the near future.

The 30-year-old says he anticipates taking a James Hird-like route into his twilight years, giving the captaincy to another Docker, allowing him to play the final seasons of his career without the leadership responsibilities.

Bell, who was a part of the Kangaroos’1996 and 1999 Premiership wins, will play his 250th AFL match in Friday night's do-or-die semi-final against Melbourne at Subiaco Oval.

Nah I think he was saying he wasn't going to rule out a return to SA at some stage in his career. He said that he might go at some point or he might not go at all, but it was always going to be a question that's put to him, so he would consider it when the time came. He also said that the more successful Freo became the more likely he would stay and see out his career - something about being a one-club player. Don't think he'll be going anywhere anytime soon.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. If you don't want him give him back.

********!

Hes been at Freo for two years; 2005 was hardly a stellar year for him, this year he has been near his best. He needs a few more years like 2006 before hes earnt the right to climb above longer standing players and be discussed as captaincy material.

I know what you say is right. It's just that Chocco had him earmarked as captain post Tredrea and when I look at Freo I think you could do worse.

He's certainly in the mix and some would say he should be the one to takeover. Its all a personal choice as we dont actually appoint the capt.

Pav I think would have every reason to feel insulted if he wasnt offered the position, but he wont be given it if he wont make a long term committment to Freo. Freo will NOT give Pav the job and then have the position thrown back at us if he leaves for home. Captains dont leave clubs, unless its a Carey-scale event. It will be the proverbial golden handcuff.

So if he gets it - it will mean hes signed on long term verbally to Freo.

Like you said IP the timing from Peter Bell is very unusual. Strange that it hasn't been reported on the tellie or on 6pr (not that I've heard anyway).

Pav is the obvious replacement although he needs to stand up when it counts more often. If Pavlich is to be included with the likes of Hird, Voss, Buckley etc he needs to play a big game this weekend after struggling against the crows.

If we win a final this year and next I think Pav will stay. If we go out in straight sets this year and struggle in 2007 Pav will probably go home.

It was actually on 6PR that I heard it. But watching the Ch10 news tonight, it seemed that it was just one question in among a whole lot of questions at his presser before Bellie plays his 250th this week. I don't think there was any emphasis placed on it - but there's always one thing the media like to focus on and that was it.

How can anyone says Pav needs to stand up more when he played last year with shoulders that kept popping out as well as the other surgery he had to fix problems he played with. How many other players can do what he has done double teamed most of every game.next captain for sure but after him its not an easy choice,I do like j carr. All the captains seem to be standing down early now but the timing does seem strange
