I'll be honest.
I don't think the issue of 'who raised his name first' makes a flying **** worth of difference. The idea that Burton would have stayed if he knew it was Port who said his name first, but left because he thought Hawthorn said "Burton' first is like primary school, taking my bat-and-ball-home stuff
Hawthorn was amenable, and willing. They didn't take unders to help a poor boy with hurt feelings get where he wanted to go, they made a business deal.
I may have said this earlier; I don't have many insiders, but I have one at a club. Not on the periphery, but someone you would have seen on tv on draft night, (with laptop and everything, right!). He said that Hawthorn raised Burton with his club. I've known this guy for 20 years, and I trust him absolutely.
I don't find it difficult to believe that if Burton was raised with this club, he was also raised with Port. Even if Port raised his name, the Hawks could have easily said no. They didn't.
The price we paid represents both the club's huge value on Wingard, and their (possibly surprising to us) valuation of Burton
