Nice effort mate - and I agree with most of your comments, particularly St Kilda who I think chose very well for their needs.

I think the Demons took best available with Salem - and we traded down to add Dom Tyson to our list along with him. We also get Hogan coming onto our list this year so although we didn't technically draft these guys tonight, I'm pretty happy with what we've done to our list.
pretty good return when you include Tyson and Hogan. Add a healthy Clarke, and the coaching of Roos, you guys have some definite light at the end of the tunnel.:thumbsu:

Marsh going late wasn't a surprise. Remember Twomey said he 'was a chance' at 55. He was rated much higher on bigfooty than he ever was by the clubs.

Scharenberg they don't particularly need - WC have a dearth of flankers (Hurn, Butler, Smith, Brennan) to set them from half back. Aish I can agree with, but I don't see a problem with WC taking the best available west australian mid.

Wasn't that my point? You passed on a better player because another was from WA

1. St Kilda, Brisbane & GWS
2. Collingwood, North & Hawthorn

Sydney did well with their first 2 picks. Carlton did well with where they got Giles, as did Melb with JKH.

Aish's size and lack of contested ball winning ability are a problem. Aish's outside game lacks the grunt of a Kelly, Gaff or Whitfield leaving him reliant purely on positioning, subsequently being more liable to a tag.

Sheed has a better inside game and a better work rate around the ground that compensates for being not quite as pristine in his disposal (which is very good, but obviously lacking comparing to Aish).

I'm not advocating Sheed as being, but with Priddis having his limitations and 29 years of age plus Kerr retiring, a player who is flexible enough to work across the flanks and behind/forward of the ball was going to meet our needs more than an undersized, elite skilled player easily susceptible to a tag in Aish.

Put simply Sheed lacks Aish's X-Factor but is far better placed to make an impact in many positions for the Eagles.

As a Lions fan I am very happy with our picks. As for the other teams, I think St Kilda did very well. They picked up 3 very different types of midfielders who should complement each other nicely. They can develop these players together the next few years and I think they have just drafted the core of their next, dominant midfield group.

Couldn't believe Freo passed over Acres

Our KPF situation is getting pretty desperate. Pav's ageing, Gumbleton is no saviour, Taberner is raw and may not make it and Zac Clarke doesn't look comfortable up forward. It's fair to say we reached with Apeness but our midfield is so strong I think it was worth it.

Dees have been desperate for pace in the middle and a small forward for a while now.

In typical Roos fashion, we've taken as a needs based approach with Salem and Kennedy-Harris. Happy to trust Roos' and the FD on these picks, Salem was touted as top ten in any case.

Good off season overall for the Demons.

Two players, both top 10 picks. They both have deficiencies as well as strengths. Do you take the homegrown mid with no go-home issues, who will add something different to your young Shuey / Gaff / Selwood midfield? Or do you pick a midfielder with a bit of x-factor and better disposal, who isn't as good all round with a flight risk?

Cripps went at least 10 picks too early. Very surprised Carlton didn't take McCarthy.

Not real impressed with getting Cripps but 10 spots is a bit low for him anyway Mccarthy is very raw and apart from the doubts on him making it would be years off him making an impact.
Next years draft contains more depth in tall talent and thats where they will probably look for a tall forward or possibly get a homesick one from GWS.

I bet Lewis Taylor will go on to become a jet. These little nuggety dudes who should be top 10 slip in every single draft every single year and they go on to become stars. Good pick for Lions at 28. They would also be stoked with Aish at 7.

I hate to say this but I am happy that the Lions got some justice for the players they lost with a few steals in this draft.

Really happy with the lions picks. Aish was a steal but with the others i think we nailed on what position players we needed. top stuff.

On Aish going back home, can't see him doing it. Looks a classy responsible bloke, lets hope he is

Doc is a classy responsible bloke by all accounts too. :p

However, having Mayes up there should help in keeping Aish.

Battersby and Templeton the most stiff. Luke Reynolds was a guy I liked and thought should've gone but there simply wasn't enough picks this year.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say Aliir Aliir is the first AFL player with the same first and last name.
Henceforth referred to as Aliir, much like a Brazilian soccer player. If he ever gets a game......

A tad devastating seeing Scharenberg available at 6. Personally I'm a massive fan of him and even though we have plenty of medium defenders, would've taken him in a heartbeat - I think he'll be a star. Still not unhappy with Sheed at 11 - he was a decent choice there (although I am a massive fan of Pat Cripps, Sheed was a safer choice as he has a more rounded game and is a more proven prospect). Was it the right call to trade 6 for 11 and 31...we'll see in the future I suppose! It'll be very interesting looking back on it.

I think Karpany at 31 is a great fit for us. Although, he's small, he's a very creative player forward of centre who is neat by foot and has good pace and evasive skills - definitely the type of player we lack. I was hoping we'd add either him or Kennedy-Harris to our list at either 31, 43 or 49.

Not sold on Barrass or Main, although none of the players selected after them really stand out to me.

GWS and St Kilda's effort stands out to me as the absolute best, although that would be expected as they held the best draft positions. Brisbane had a lot of selections, so they should extract some good value from this draft too. Sydney probably the relative best for mine given their position, I think they got some good value from

Hope Garlett thrives at Hawthorn - always want to see great talents make the most of it. If so, he fulfills his potential he'll be the steal of the draft. I think JKH was also a great 'bargain buy' at pick 40 by Melbourne.

I'm totally expecting this post will look very silly in 6 years time!

don't mean to be rude but i've heard Roos say emphatically "draft best available, trade for needs" in fact he was going on about why a lot of clubs have got it wrong.

I agree though they'll work out for you, maybe that was just a lucky part of it

i should have been clearer. i have no problem with the sheed selection. have no problem with the barrass selection. the other two west coast selection i dont get

i dont get the pick 6 downgrade either. could have had scharenberg or aish

Barrass had been linked to WC for a while. Even as high as 31.

He had a super colts season, but we'll have to wait a while to see how he develops..
