get over your self, idiot it was an observation, but when you do point that out it is funny, hawthorn where one of the lower drawing teams during the nab cup, after, yet they try and class them self as pone of the big clubs:thumbsu:

Anyone who uses NAB challenge matches as a reason to disprove a team's standing as a "big club" instantly loses any credibility they may have had.

As an aside, almost 7000 is a really good showing for a GWS pre season game. They'll do well for themselves out of Canberra.

5,003 at Hawthorn v Brisbane

Yes but ive yet to see a source for that information. It wasnt on Etihads twitter, its not carried in match reports on the AFL website, or in any of the HS or Age reports. Its literally the only game on the AFL website for the 2014 NAB stuff with a TBA figure next to it. Ill have to have another look tonight - i seem to be missing a lot of things these days, or Ill need a source link before I change my data.

read the comments before it. it wasn't meant who is a bigger club, i originally stated the figure of the hawks v lions games. and the response i got from the hawthorn fan was, carrying on about their recent success of the last 5 years

Variable pricing system has claimed its' first victim you'd think

Was this game subject to variable pricing?

How many would have gone to the G if it was there? another 4-5K or more?

Last time this fixture was at the MCG was round 14, 2o12. It attracted 44,891, on a Saturday afternoon. (1.45pm). The previous MCG fixture was in 2009, and attracted 44,114, also on a saturday arvo.

A lot of casual Collingwood fans will drop off this year.

That said; I don't think anyone should really pay much attention to the crowds this round. I'm betting the AFL aren't paying attention to any except the GWS-Sydney game.

collingwood fans dont know where etihad stadium is, their messiah Eddie Maguire doesn't like collingwood playing there,

Very ordinary for an opening Collingwood match I expected at least 45,000 Maybe the F1 is having an effect So where were all those thousands of Magpie fans?

They could have easily flipped the fixture and done this at Subiaco and would have been sold out.

No doubt starting at some absurdly early time to keep Channel 7 happy. It started at 4:30 yesterday over here. On a working day, that's ridiculous.

It does show that Collingwood aren't as big as they think they are. They can't even fill Etihad when they get the opening game of the year.

Another really good example of the impact on crowds for Ethihad games V MCG. Given a superb night, round 1, Freo the grand finalist I would have thought at the G it would have pushed 50,000. I thought it would have got 41-42,000 at Ethihad last night.. Just shows you yet again that without 'free' entry of MCC and largely AFL members, and a few others the crowds at Ethihad are always below an equivalent MCG fixture. Also another good reason why it's pointless comparing attendances of clubs in VIC that play at the MCG V Ethihad. Ie: Collingwood and Richmond Vs Essendon and Carlton v similar oppositions / overall attendances. Makes the 40,400 for Ess v Port at twilight Sunday in 2013 compare very well as a comparison. Just saying..

Ridiculous that the AFL scheduled in Freo to start the season. Not that they are not worthy, but the early March start means a 3 hour time difference with Perth and 4.30 is indeed a shambles. If you were going to start the season at Etihad, why not go with Essendon who are actually a tenant and get 40k + to just about every home game. Adelaide v Essendon would have been my pick to open - both teams at the same level so would have been a nail biter you would think.

Yeah very disappointing. Was a lot of empty seats behind the goals on the second level.
Typical Etihad crowd. Level 1 and 3 well attended (many were in the last row of level 3), but the premium pricing of Level 2 is a rip off. Medallion club (Level 2 on broadcast side) looked ok, but opposite and behind goals there were swathes of empty seats.

I agree that Essendon should have been involved, but would have opened the season with the Essendon vs Hawthorn match. As much as I hate the fact that we never play Essendon at the MCG, as the etihad game always sells out, it is for that reason that it should have opened the season.

Funny how the last 5 years the outcry about Richmond Carlton as the opener, yet the build up and excitement in Vic was massive and 80k plus attended.

Yesterday the build up was so low key it felt like a NAB game. Expected better from the Pie supporters.

I have been saying it for years Collingwood fans hate etihad. For our home games at Etihad we would average 35,000 pie fans to our home games in the last 5 years. Compared to averaging 45,000-50,000 pie fans to the g.

I go to every Collingwood game and I notice the difference. It's the same with hawthorn and Melbourne Fans they hate the place and a lot refuse to go.

agree, Essendon always play Hawthorn & Geelong at Etihad they sell out every time. last year, Essendon was in the top 2 & the success of the hawks and cats the game would of attracted 80k
