This draft might take 3 years to figure out how we went. Last years was apparent we nailed it immediately. We might have nailed it, who knows. Right now it feels like we're all stretching for something to pin our hopes on with these players, with the Higgins elephant in the room and his shadow will loom large on this board I reckon particularly if Ling is a dud.

At present it feels like we've go e to a restauarant and ordered 3 Towers please.

I like Deano....

He was only ever an Asiatic Elephant ie the midget version. I'm not sure about everyone else but a guy who dropped out of school and had 2 full years extra to prepare for the draft, is undersized and has questionable scope to evolve into midfield full time doesn't leave much of a shadow in my book.

Higgins will be good but he wouldn't get the opportunities that Ling will considering our current depth by position. No doubt a stretch but Ling will be a good player for us.

EDIT - the player I might regret is Richards

EDIT - the player I might regret is Richards

That was an interesting decision on the face of it as Richards is a similar type of player to Ling. The main difference, at least from the highlights I saw is that Ling seems a bit more daring with his run and carry. Maybe Beatson really liked that.

I am willing to bet one of Ling or Stoddart will play a reasonable chunk of games in 2018. Neither look like they would be too far off it.

I am curious though, who do you all think one of them will push out of defence? I think Longmire would love to get Mills out of defence and into the midfield.
The Swans Instagram page called Ling a midfielder rather than a defender. May have heard something which Beatson said? Either way I'd expect Horse to rotate a couple players between midfield and defence like we do with our forwards currently

One can now see perhaps why we were happy to part with Murray as young Ling plays this role perfectly.
I also feel that Fisher may miss our on being re rookied now but AJ will be taken as a rookie.

We have a very good list looking forward to the next 6 years so we will stay very relevant in terms of contesting finals IMO.

I think Cunningham and a tall will go from our 22.

I wonder if Stoddart has a chance at Smith's back pocket in a couple years
He may have a shot next year if Smith has what think was a very poor year in 2017 (especially early). His lack of pace is is as obvious as Laidler’s and we all saw how that turned out as the year dragged on.

He'd have to be pretty extraordinarily reliable as a very young defender to do that. Smith isn't quite as consistent as used to be but he is still mentally strong and sticks to the task no matter the context better than almost any other Swan.

Any to get Towers out of the team. Personally Towers is not consistant enough IMO.

On reflection i am happy with our choices. The two attacking half backs fill a need and i think more likely to get an opportunity than other positions. I think dawson and florent are first in line as mids. We still have papley, hayward and rose as smaller forwards. Brander like mccartin would have been a long term prospect.

Camera man lingered around the Swans staff for awhile while they were conferring with each other and Horse gave him the stink eye.
Camera bloke did more than linger, he was practically sitting on Horses shoulder.
Horse reacted like the bloke was an oversized fly.

Right now horse is obsessed with midfielders. Papley is the best small forward we have had in recent memory and even in a year where he was coming off an injury, horse has started to play him more as a midfielder than specialist forward. Imo we still require a crumbing forward if this is the case and if so we should be able to get one in the rookie draft

Once it was obvious the Geelong final was done, Mills seemed to get a run forward. It could be that Heeney goes into the middle more, and Mills gets a crack as that half-forward/mid where Heeney has been playing.

Not sure I like that idea. Would be better to have Heeney a bit more forward and Mills in the midfield since Heeney has already proven he is a rather effective forward.

And Mills isn’t the greatest of kicks! Totally agree.

Never new this , but Knightmare is someone called Chris Doerre from ESPN

Yes. ESPN hired him about 12 months ago as their draft reporter. He basically does the same thing on the ESPN website that he used to do on bigfooty.

It isn't surprising he got the job though as while he tends to overinflate the value of academy picks he is generally speaking quite insightful.

The competition will rue letting Hawthorn get Worpel. Calling it now.

Other than that, happy to welcome another three kids on board. Not sure they were the route I would’ve gone, but that’s why I am working two jobs as a uni student and not being paid the big bucks to shape AFL lists. Good luck to them!
He and Mitchell will make a pretty good combination.
