The 50 metre penalty has gone past its use by date. Go back to the 15 metre or at most 30 metre. I would hate to see more matches decided by over-officious umpiring.

Trigger happy umpires award this free kick for trivial matters and it is the most frustrating thing in the game besides people diving for free kicks.

1) this one was awarded against Essendon's Dustin Fletcher for his "demeanor".

2) this one was awarded against Sydney's Jessie White because he handed the ball back one milisecond too late to the player. is this really worth someone getting a free shot at goal?

"that is a joke" is what BT said in the commentary.

3) This was a free kick to Fremantle's Ballantyne for a dive. Similar to what we saw on the weekend with West Coast's Darling who also dived.

Answer- get rid of the 50 metre penalty. It has been a failure.

You're wrong.

50 Meter penalty needs to stay.

What you obviously don't like is unfavourable umpiring.

The only problem is when as a specatator we deem it to be the wrong decision... they really should not give out 50m unless they are 100% sure.

The problem is for something like moving a centimeter over the mark (sometimes the umps say step back, most times they just award 50) or being pissed off (its a sport, you are gonna have emotion) 50 meters is just far too much. Bring back 15.

Why not have 2 different penalties.

Creeping over the mark, kicking the ball after a free kick and umpire abuse and things like that can be 25m.

Dangerous late hits can stay at 50m.

These days a 50m penalty given away at CHB doesn't do much. The players flood the 50 and the player has a difficult kick into the 50 or has to kick it sideways. However a 50 in the forward half in the ground can results in an easy set shot and a cheap goal.

It's the umpiring. You can't change a rule because the umpires are to incompetent to implement it properly.

50 metres is perfectly acceptable as a penalty... when legitimately warranted.

Need 15m, 30m and 50m for certain offences

Like stepping over the mark = 15m?
Abusing the umpire = 30m?
Hitting someone in the head = 50m? and so on...

But I think the 'Double Goal' is a joke, this is a much more Dumber Rule!!!
If anything it should be a free kick in the centre square

25m penalty for minor offences (holding on, over the mark, interchange infringement, etc) and the umpire can double it for serious breaches.

EDIT: beaten haha

They need a 25 metre penalty for minor things and the 50 metres for the other things I reckon.

It has to stay.

It just needs to be paid sensibly, not when a player has a toenail over the mark. And for abuse, surely you can't pay 50 for saying "WHAT?!"

Huge bumps after kicking and tackling after marks are clear 50s

Another umpiring thread by a Carlton supporter, one would have though the free ride they received all season would have kept them happy.

It's the umpires over-enforcing it. The rule should stay, but the umpires need to be less harsh.

Ben Hudson got a 50 for saying "what!". It borders on the ridiculous sometimes.

You'll end up with "professional 50s" when you introduce 15 and 25 m penalties. The time it takes for the umpire to move the player 15 or 25 down the ground gives the team more time to flood back with only 15 m lost. Just leave it and perhaps the players should just be more disciplined?

Why is it that Hawthorn or Carlton supporters seem to start nearly all the umpire whinging threads?

Gotta love all the offended Carlton supporters who want all the rules of the game changed because they were knocked out of the finals.. again.

LOL at least you found some other examples of unjust 50m penalties, before throwing out 3 in one game.

Why is the Ballantyne free in there? It had nothing to do with 50m penalties.

What's annoying me lately is a number of players standing around and confusing the guy who has to give the ball back. If he gives it to the wrong one, they all start appealing for 50m. Or the player who has the free walking away with his back to the player with the ball who then gives it to someone else and gets pinged for 50m

So if you had the option

1) 50 metres for Ben Hudson saying "what" (there was no swearing) in regards to confusion about an umpiring decision

or

2) 20 metres for saying "what"

which do you think is more just?

I thought it was cute how he mentioned the 3 against his team as a side note...... nobody will realize what his alterior motives are that way.

Exactly. There was the Sydney vs St Kilda match at Homebush where the St Kilda player called for the ball to be handed to him then jumped out of the way...deliberately fooling the Swans player.- the ball fell to the ground and the umpire awarded 50 metres penalty against the Swans.

Adam Goodes then tried to copy it (Again bringing in bad habits into the game) as it worked for the st kilda player...the same thing happened ball fell to ground, but this time there was no 50 metre penalty.

Just get rid of it all together- it gives the umpires too much influence in a game.

The match on the weekend was the final straw for me. I hated that rule with a passion before this match, but that match on the weekend sealed the deal for me. The rule allows too much undue umpire interference in the flow of the game.

Get rid of it. For 80? plus years we had the 15 metre penalty. for 10? years we have had the 50 metre penalty and it has been a failure- just look at the evidence. The worst rule in the game.

Yeah and bring back the slew of professional frees that used to blight the game when players were happy to give away 15 metres to break up momentum.

So you are saying that the match never moved fast/ball movement when the 15 metre penalty was in place? Well it did. Trial a 30 metre then if you like in the pre-season.

Either way, there is no way player confusion on who to hand the ball to is worth his opponent receiving a free shot at goal. We have to lift the standards of the game - and the 50 metre penalty is too big a reward for things like a centimetre of grass, a milisecond in time, or an annoyed vowel directed at the umpire....

Fix the rule up before a grand final is decided by one of these howlers of a decision.
