Yep - can't have anything interfering with those sponsor logos. Not enough space! (Note it's the 'General manager of commercial operations' doing all the talking - I bet he's had a few nasty phone calls from clubs protecting their sponsors).

'Fans reacted positively'. Direct quote from article.

Of course they could have made it work. 'The unique cut of AFL guenseys' - oh, spare me. Have a look at a basketball singlet - they can fit on numbers and names. Of course they don't have sponsorship on the backs. OK - try the NBL. They have names, numbers and sponsorship.

I've got no problem with them saying 'Aaah, it was a bit of a non-event, so we decided to stand pat'. But don't waffle on with a whole lot of weasel-words.

I don't care what their reasons were, the fact is you couldn't see the names with the gps units in and due to the size of the numbers, and I think some teams had smaller numbers too to try and fit them in, and you still couldn't read them unless it was a close up. It was a silly idea in the first place, we don't need to copy things that other sports do, for once the AFL have actually stuck with tradition and left things alone.

The main benefit of this decision is I will own a sublimated player issue jumper and none of them will ever be made again :thumbsu:
Until 2016 when we have a 'heritage round', commemorating Round 5 2014.

I think it could have worked if the design was thought out a bit more, rather than just shoving the name where it would fit. The main gripe with a lot of posters, judging by the above, appeared not to be the idea itself, rather the execution. I expect them to revisit it at some stage, though, frankly.

Personally, I couldn't really care either way. If they eventually go with the names it's all good, if not that's fine too.

Sanity has prevailed, the names won't be going on the jumpers. Cricket put numbers on the players because the spectators couldn't see the players names on their shirts, and they only have eleven players on the field at one time from one team. We when for the numbers in the first place, and have found that method of knowing which player is which has been successful for over 100 years.

But they have numbers and names in the NBA, NFL and MLB. But this are American sports that are not like Australian Rules Football. We don't have to do it because they have done it.

NRL doesn't. Melbourne Storm had names on the jumpers for the first two seasons, but were told to remove them. The other three are coping the higher leagues of those sports overseas.

A problem with the names on the jumpers that they didn't say anything about is the names that don't fit on the back. There are a few hyphenated surnames now. Some non traditional surnames would be hard to fit on the back of jumpers.

Ok I thought NRL had names but that doesn't matter. But North were still able to have NMFC and the names so why couldn't Brisbane or Sydney do that. With the hyphenated surnames, didn't Lewis Roberts-Thompson get his name abbreviated to LRT? It is possible even with all these crazy things for certain names and teams.

That "L.R.T" is one of the most grinding things I've ever witnessed.

It is like the sign for Ferntree Gully Road on Huntingdale Road which has FTG Road. If you don't have local knowledge or are a fan of the Swans you my not know what they mean.

Would that mean the Steve Silvagni would have S.O.S on his jumper.

What about the lack of full stop at the end of T?

No. Because Silvagni's name would fit on the jumper. They put LRT on Roberts-Thompson because his name was too long. Also it was his choice to put LRT on the jumper.
