Opinion The all new 2013 trading & drafting thread

Lets say GWS didnt enter the comp and we were rewarded a PP...
A) Patton + Cameron
B) Patton + Wingard
what would have people done?
Remembering that patton was always going to be the number 1 draft pick so cant say Cameron +wingard etc

Well, Patton was only "going to be #1" as Cameron was already taken out of the draft pool, so you can't say that.

A lot of what ifs in that draft considering the preselections, entrance of GWS, first draft for GC based on ladder position, mini draft etc.

One thing is for sure, we have been given the rawest deal wrt draft position in light of PP changes and entrance of new teams. Of course, after Collingwood, Hawthorn, St Kilda, Carlton, WC and Freo made out like bandits.

Which is why I have zero sympathy for GWS or GCS, and hope they die. I don't care about good for the game shit. I care about Port Adelaide, and we were r*ped by Gold Coast, Greater Western Sydney and the AFL in the name of expansion. They were built on the back of our misfortune. I hated seeing Sheedy's smug face on the Grand Final dias wearing that god-awful Giants scarf, as if he was saying "We'll be here soon."

Of course, if Gold Coast hadn't been around, we would have won our first AFL wooden spoon, so there's always that...

There are two ways we can go. We can either keep complaining about what we didn't get, or start working with what we did. St.Kilda had a talented list - Riewoldt, Dal Santo, Montagna, Ball, Fisher, Goddard...and what did they win? **** all. Because all the talent in the world doesn't assure a team of success. Hawthorn was expected to create a dynasty in 2008 with all their talent - Franklin, Roughead, Mitchell, Hodge, Sewell, Burgoyne...but it took them 5 years to realize it.

Geelong isn't a great team because they have talent. They are a great team because they sacrificed and worked for each other. And that's something that you can't build in a cultureless club like Gold Coast or GWS. I don't care how many draft picks they have. But we can, and are, rediscover it at Alberton.

"Being a bit older it just makes it a bit easier."
Thorp, 24, blames a lack of maturity and overall readiness for his lack of success in his first AFL stint.
"I was extremely immature at the time," he said.
"Coming across from Tassie to live in Melbourne, I didn't handle that well and being injured I really didn't handle that either.
"Certainly my maturity levels weren't where they needed to be at that age."
The centre-half forward said his past failure encourages him to make the most of any opportunity he receives.
"I got taken nice and early in the draft, and got shown the door nice and early and I've learnt a lot since then," Thorp said.
"I think that probably is really a big motivator to take another opportunity with both hands."

So we spend 5 years developing Lobbe into a gun ruckman (based on the last half this season) and we have to rely upon an injury prone ruckman Redden (who shows potential) and Renouf who can't get a regular AFL game.

I'm not saying our team would get better losing Lobbe, but if we got a very good KPF or a top 10 midfielder, or a number 1 draft pick I'd probably consider trading him.

I believe our best area at this point is ruckman, as Redden is amazing and we probably won't play both him AND Lobbe. Renouf isn't great but he would at least win hitouts, so if we got a great player in after losing Lobbe there would quite likey be a net gain.

I believe that list, although only used yesterday, is wrong.

Alan Didak (Collingwood) has already been delisted
Josh Hunt (Geelong) has already been delisted
Matt Thomas (Port Adelaide) as noted has already been delisted
Daniel Cross (Western Bulldogs) has already been delisted

Dustin Fletcher (unrestricted) is still a free agent
Dean Cox (unrestricted) is still a free agent

Daniel Giansiracusa (Western Bulldogs) has already re-signed with the Dogs

Plus the messy business with Nick Dal Santo (restricted) is still ongoing.

McGuane you get feeling is open to offers? Doesn't seem to be falling over himself to re-sign with the Tigers or maybe just looking for something to force the Tigers hand to maybe put a better deal than they are looking at putting on the table at present?

I'd be happy to jag Mitch Robinson if the price is right.

Mitch Robinson is undisciplined and can't kick. I'd prefer keep Matt Thomas than give up anything for Robinson. I'm also very disappointed we would target Matt White. The club is dropping the ball, would be a shame to see all the good work done this season to be undermined by poor off-season recruiting.

Ah, well ok then.

It's a harsh reality check when the swans are recruiting buddy and we are chasing white

And we have so many stars to pay too... yet the best we can muster is a bid for Matt White?!

Disagree. I think Robinson is a terrific impact player and could improve a lot under our coaching staff.

Not sure why you think our good season is being undermined. Both players would clearly improve our list (assuming we don't give up too much for Robinson).

I dont think either player would be in our 2014 best 18, so we wouldn't want to be giving up much for them when there will be hidden gems in the draft. At least White is a UFA and wont require a trade.

I think everyone should take a deep breath and wait to see what transpires before bagging the Club and accuse of it of undoing a years worth of rebuilding. The trade and FA period hasn't even started yet!

Yeah I'd love to be paying a 36 year old 1.2 in 9 years time. I wouldn't have buddy at port on the contract he's getting from the swans.
