I think the strategy you mention will happen this year. It’s just Gibbs left, Docherty did his knee and we didn’t get either Rockliff or Devon Smith and basically everything that can go wrong has in the first 4 rounds.

If 90% of our list is fit and firing we could probably win max 7-8, now it’s down to like 60-70% and we are like a vfl team.

There was always a risk of what we are going through now happening either 2016 or 17, but we had a good run with keeping most of our best players on the park.

Worth remembering we were 6-5 in 2016 and with Murphy out we won 1 more game, then last year we were 5-7 Cripps and Curnow go in consecutive weeks and we only win one more.

It’s a bit of a house of cards at the moment

As has been said a lot, we are 3 years in and there are quite obvious reasons we are doing worse this year.

We just have to stick it out and look for positives where we can, but its probably going to get even uglier than what we have seen so far, looking at out playing stocks, and confidence/form of everyone

Wright is one who's surprised me, a genuine improver. But Carlton have too many recycled players who haven't come on. Not sure if the problem is with the talent identification or the development.

Say what you like about a guy like Armfield, he could be depended upon to carry out instructions. It behoves the recycleds to fully absorb what Bolton is preaching. This is the last chance they'll get.

What don't you like about SOS? AS a GWS guy i thought you would be happy with the state of your list. The most talented lis in the comp who if it wasn't for a poor coach and injuries would have had a premiership by now.

Again too early to tell on most we have got the last 3 years.

No one was expecting much from Lamb, Sumner, Phillips, Kerridge or Wright but all had moments (Wright has definitely exceeded expectations).

As I’ve pointed out the recycled ones we got this year in O’Shea mullet and Shaw confuse me. Not sure why we needed an army of half backs when we have so little experienced bodies in the midfield.

Shaw may come in this week and surprise, surely he can’t be worse than Mullett or O’Shea

Maybe. Players changing clubs will normally fire early or not at all. A surprise like Liam Jones or Jake Townsend is the exception that proves the rule.

I think if you bring a tried player in then he needs to be played to take advantage of his strengths. If required to conform to an unsuitable structure, he'll likely fail for the same reasons he failed previously. Mullett has AFL-quality disposal but at no stage has he looked like an AFL midfielder (happy to be told I'm wrong). His best games were played when he was given the ball in the backline and required to hit targets, so give him Docherty's role and the ball.

Agree with your point on types, O'Shea and Shaw are similar. O'Shea probably has/had more scope, but he's 26. He's gotta fire now.

Because i look at the Giants list compared to other clubs and think it is miles ahead of Richmond and the dogs yet you have fallen at the prelim the last 2 seasons.
Having Devon Smith in and out of the side last year and leaving him out in place of Stevie J in the prelim was really bad, Johnson was cooked.
Persisting with Mumford, Lobb, Cameron and Patton at stages or even 3 of them at once and struggling with ball movement but refusing to make a change.

But mainly, you have underachieved with what you have.

Well smith wasn’t really fit last year towards the end, but I agree they should of cut their losses with Stevie j earlier than what they did.

Mind you with their injuries and unstable lineup last year they still made top 4

I still think the jury is out
 
My problem is they've spent a large amount of draft capital on guys like Marchbank, Weitering and Plowman, who are at the moment kinda similar players, in that they're athletic rebounding intercepting types. But all these players get in the way of each other in terms of selection, as the club also wants to play Jones. And none of these guys are really great one-on-one defenders (yet anyway), and they're still a bunch of kids who are raw and will struggle playing in a side without a midfield and there's no experienced KPD leader in that team to direct traffic and help out. Docherty and Simpson are good but they can't shut down a a gun forward and help out the kids.

Carlton fans laud these trades as a genius move but in reality, Carlton should have used their draft capital to target players to bolster the midfield and forwardline alongside the backline. It's like Silvagni just bought everything out of the giants' bargain bin without considering if the club needed it.

Now they're going to have to spend a lot of draft capital drafting midfielders which is going to take a long time.
 
At the moment looks like we'll get picks 1 or 2.... I doubt Ben will be bid on by those picks leaving us to grab him (like we did with Jack) when a club finally makes a bid for him... at present I wouldn't be surprised if he's a late 2nd or 3rd rounder, which is why SOS stockpiled 2nd round picks this year in order to get Ben, Hickmott and Manton in.

Oh its donuts is it since sos has taken over is it?

Weitering, Mckay, Curnow, Cunningham, SOSOS was his 1st year
SPS, Fisher, Macreadie, Polson, Williamson, Kerr in his 2nd
Dow, O'brien, De Koning, Schumacher, Garlett last year.

So in his 3 years at the club 13/16 have made an appearance at afl level of which 9 are best 22 already and of those that have missed out one is a long term project kpf and 2 were drafted 6 months ago.

Maybe do some research, it might help ya know.
