Does anyone have a clue as to what that was about? He'd already kicked three goals - how much does M<ick want? So public too.

A variety of things probably.

1. Getting involved in a needless scuffle with his opponent and repeatedly striking him high
2. Headbutting his opponent in the nuts after taking a mark
3. Throwing the ball away on the wing and thus giving up yet another 50m penalty

but last but not least....

His poor 'Richo like' reaction to a Barham turnover when he was on the lead and Barham hit a North bloke lace out.

All of these things probably combined for him to deserve quite a bake, and rightly so.

it would have to be for how often he falls over when he drops marks. It's really at the ridiculous point for him - he charges on leads recklessly with no consideration for the flight of the ball and then has to over stretch and fall over. Result, his opponent mops up the spill and they are away.
This is a freaking nasty habit he'd better fix in a hurry

There must be something going on, because I would imagine it's fairly standard for a coach to give someone a spray. Jack seems like a pretty mature kid, I'm sure he'll take whatever it was MM said on board and we'll all come back next week. It strikes me as a storm in a teacup, but I must admit I'd like to know what the hell was going on there?

Jack really needs to pull his head in sometimes, and i'm glad mick reminded him about what is required at AFL level. That 50 when he just threw the ball away was just silly immature stuff. You could tell he was more interested in his stouch with thompson than the ball, and was probably going to continue doing silly things until someone gave him a spray.

It's the players kicking to him on the lead that are the problem not Anthony. Its up to the players to kick it to his advantage not for him to slow down so his opponent catches up with him and give them the chance to spoil.

Our players failed to hit him on the lead on numerous occasions last night by kicking over his head or through poor footskills.

The spray was probably for the headbutt, he will take it in his stride.

I like the way the kid plays but he did do some very stupid things last night and dserved a spray. The throwing the ball away was the dumbest 50 I have seen this year. He will also draw the attention of the MRP for equally stupid acts. Cloke may also draw attention of the mrp for a fairly high and reckless tackle on Petrie(I think) in the 3rd qtr. Its not out of the question that Anthony, cloke and Medhurst could all be missing next week which would make the game against the saints almost impossible.

So one guy who continually gives away rash, undisciplined 50s.

The guy who constantly scrags and tries to assert himself after every contest and is always at the risk of giving away a 50.

This guy gets rewarded with the captaincy?

I don't see the difference between Jack's poor behavior last night and Maxwell's poor behavior over the last two years. Other than that Jack's mistakes were at non crucial times in the match.

It not much to worry about, MM will want to be seen to end a few careers in the coming months to reassert himself.

He always does it when he is loosing the playing group. (see 04-05)

Nothing like the scalps of a few decent players to get the playing group back to their humble subservient selves.

I just hope JA isn't part of his power play. But from last night it looks like he might be in the crosshairs unfortunately.

Not always true, and he can't learn to make better decisions on the lead more often then he'll continue to have 4 marks and 4 kicks a game. Glad he's such an elite converter because he needs to learn to get more when he doesn't get the perfect kick.

Wipe your tears up would you princess? Honestly...

The kids shows passion and hunger, it is great I reckon. About 6 of our guys gave away 50 metre penalties last night, it was hardly enough to be getting up in arms about. I'm sure he knew it was stupid after he did it, you move on though.

I don't think he needs to pull his head in at all, I hope he keeps playing with the same passion. Needs to make sure it cleans it up a bit in the silly mistakes department, but the little physical scruffs he has are brilliant and we need our FF to oppose himself on the game.

If the spray was for that 50 metre penalty and a spatter of minuscule other little crap people are mention, it was hardly warranted.

He brought the ball to ground continually last night from bad kicks or from situations where he was out numbered, he crunched a few packs and still managed to kick three.

His decision making is fine.

A little over the top dont you think. Every coach in the AFL would have given any player a spray after Anthonys antics in the 3rd quarter. Not sure what maxwell has to do with this specific topic. He gave away a poor 50 and has probably cost himself a game in the next week or 2 because of an even more undisciplined act. I highly doubt this will have any bearing on him being at the club or playing again this year. He is a good young player but everyone needs a spray to get them back on track, especially after some very stupid incidents.

From the ABC Radio today.

Anthony himself said to a media commentator that MM told him "if you throw the ball away like that again you will never play for Collingwood again." in relation to the fifty paid against Jack when he flicked the ball over the boundary.
Calmer words were said after the initial outburst.

I can't see any problem with it.
MM would have been already pissed off with other 3 ****en stupid 50's and Jack wore his wrath.
It's called coaching with passion and no doubt Jack and Mick will both speak calmly and less "terminally" about it after the night.

And Jack will never do that again and go on and have an illustrous career at Collingwood.:thumbsu:

Storm in a Teacup.

After watching the replay, it seems MM had every right to have a "spray" at JA. In the 10 minutes leading up to that spray, JA had made 2 terrible errors, kicked a goal and headbutted an opposition player in the balls.

MM had a 30-45 sec spray at him, then went and addressed JA near the huddle in a more docile nature, more of a teaching approach.

What MM was doing was basically making a point at a stage in the game, where although we had a 47 point lead, there was still plenty to gain.

JA is very important to us, will play every game this year barring injury, and will kick 55-60 goals if he continues on his game average after 6 rounds.

MM had every right to give him a spray, but then controlled the situation by talking to JA in a controlled way, a great way of handling a young player.

I have no problem with the situation that unfolded, every player needs a spray every now and then.

The timing of his leads and his positioning inside the F50 is woeful.

He seems to have almost no ability to read the unfolding play in front of him, which leads to him usually leading either late, or once the ball has been kicked, and hitting the ball way to hard with the defender right up his hammer.

He has a horribly rigid pair of hands, doesn't use his body well in contested situations, gets drawn up the ground far too easily chasing ball.

He is constantly leading into other peoples space, I don't know how many times I have seen him leading to exactly the same spot as someone else.

But if he can learn to anchor to the goal square, time and burst onto 25m leads, he will be one of the premier forwards in the game. It's rare a player can have an ordinary game and kick 3-4 goals. This means when he has a good game he is going to be kicking 7s 8s and 9s.

imo he is potentially the most important on-field arrival at Collingwwod since Buckley. But it will all depend on his focus and the focus of those trusted with his development. Accurate set shot kicking, to the level JA is at is the rarest commodity in the game.

He is also the closest to Maxwell in the way he approaches the contest. So I can see how the guy might be confused with MMs spray last night.

I'm going to go out on a limb and suggest that Malthouse has delivered a similar spray to Paul Medhurst 5 or 6 times over the last couple of years. If it was necessary, it was necessary. End of story.

It amazes me that people go on about this. Jack Anthony is doing well but he is making very little of a contribution off the ball. And he can ill afford to act like a petulant superstar when he is only kicking a couple of goals a week. He aint Buddy...

I would be very very surprised if he is in the forward line in 2 years time. But having said that, he can kick the ball and he like the responsibility of doing that and only Davis, Lockyer, Didak and Medhurst are in that group. The rest of the young blokes either cant kick or go psycho in front of the goals.

What has happened to the other young forwards? They are trying to make a backman out of Reid, and the rest just dont seem to be up to it.

People are making something out of nothing. Its called discipline, it was obvious anthony didnt have to throw the ball away like that. You just have to look at the essendon game with that 50 given away late in the game and see how costly it can be. I know the game was pretty much dead and buried, but its better hes told how it is now than when theres a 3 pt margain and we go down by less than a goal again.

You must stop the lies and constant attacks on Mick Malthouse so you can lure people against him. Please stop it, you are being disgraceful. If you hate mick that much, you must obviously barrack against us every week so that he gets sacked.....You must be sad when he wins?

Your post has been up for 5 hours without a mod dealing with it so I'll defend myself.

I quoted an article from The Australian, I made NO judgment on what MM said I just commented on it.

the full-forward has kicked the last of his 15 goals for the season.

Your attack on me is unwarranted and out of line but expected from the usual suspects whenever we win a game. I have never made my thoughts of MM a secret just as I have never hidden behind a user name with no face. Your last line is interesting where you post "when he wins", well I support the Collingwood Football Club..... unlike you who supports Mick Malthouse.
