about Leigh "the Anvil" Brown, was curious as to your thoughts on the club picking him up, is the general consensus happy? when he was at freo we always thought he had potential, and he is bloody hard at it, but sometimes can be found out with his speed... that being said, what role do you see him playing for the pies in 09? was he signed for two years? or just the one?

I thought West Coast did the best out of the national draft with their picks - on a talent, not necessarily needs basis.

i reckon brown will be servicable at the pies, he will never be a star but he hasnt been anywhere that he has played..... he will at the worst be a handy depth player imo

Most people were pretty negative or perplexed about it. The way I see it is if he is good enough to be in the 22 he will have to be playing pretty damn well to be keeping N Brown, Presti or Anthony out of the KPD position - so that would be a positive. If not he will be providing good injury depth and helping out our VFL side which struggled a bit in its first year particularly down back. Either way I think we win here.

The other reason that I think we drafted him is that he is a great clubman - a good bloke and trainer. This I think is a real positive behind the scenes with such a young list and some of the stuff that happened last year. Personally I can't see him doing that well and making a big impact in the 22 but i'd be happy to be proven wrong.

I've posted my thoughts on our best young prospects and why they're our best.

I don't think recruiting Brown was a wise decision. He is a proven dud player. I'd rather select a kid who has a chance to be a dud, rather than a player who is 100% useless. And he is useless.

I've also criticized our gameplan, and it's fair enough. We wont win a flag by attacking down the wings so incessantly, and I do think the game has gone past Malthouse.

It's my opinion, just because it's critisism doesn't mean I can't express it.

I have no doubt you read it. I'm more pointing out you don't seem to have anything to say to it.

I don't see what's wrong with my opinions on the club, and as far as I can tell, your only problem with them is that they're anti-Collingwood, not that they're unreasonable opinions.

as an outsider looking in and without knowing the intracacies of the CFC i pretty much agree with everything you have said... he is a good clubman, he won the clubman award at freo and may have done the same at the roos... im not sure, but yeah he wont displace brown, who is a gun, when you say anthony, are you talking of john anthony? who played forward? wouldnt think brown would be on the list as a forward, and anthony looked great from what i saw, has an awesome kick on him.... brown may have been brought in as coverage for presti, who is getting on and would play on the same type of players that brown would... and presti has had his injuries lately, if i remember rightly a few of your posters were calling for him to retire at the end of last year

None taken. I have no problems with people having a different view to me.

But when people don't accept my opinions and decide that I'm anti-Collingwood and say that I don't even like the club, when the club means just as much to me as anyone, I won't back down.

Off-topic but, yeah, me too. Along with our refusal to use the corridor, I shudder every time I see one of our backs one-out on a gun forward with nobody else in our defensive half (e.g. Reiwoldt in our final's loss this year). IMO Mick has taken one-on-one too far. A couple of years back, he was more than happy to use a loose man down back. Now, he'll go with a seven (or eight!) man forward-line rather than directly combat the opposition's loose man strategy - and it kills us sometimes (e.g. the Saints and Doggies - who almost always go loose-man).

Re. Brown, if we needed experience, I'd prefer we talked Wakelin into another year (as back-up for Presti). Still, I'm prepared to wait and see. Anthony may end up down back but, gee, he's now almost our most reliable kick for goal.

Yeah I do mean John Anthony. He had played all his footy up until last year as a defender and was only used forward as we had alot of injuries up forward with Rocca, Reid and Rusling all out for alot of the season. Some people on this board want to see him stay up forward - as he played so well there - but I think he will ultimately play CHB for us. He is a natural defender and i'd like to see him go back this year. This may not happen as he is training as forward as far as I know atm. The other option at CHB is Ben Reid who played the last few VFL games there last year and is being used in training as a CHB atm. But he'll probably spend a fair amount of this year in the VFL too. This is another reason why Brown was likely recruited - as a stop gap in defense while Reid, Anthony, NBrown develop into this role, and also as insurance if Presti is injured. However Presti is fit atm so hopefully he'll play all year.
