If you read this article it shows the amount of supporters for each afl club. Suprinsly the order for the top five supported clubs in australia are as follows:
sydney with 1.4 million
brisbane with 1.3 million
essendon with 796 000
collingwood with 749 000
WEST COAST with 746 000

What do you think of West coast's effort in this case?...

2004 IS THE YEAR FOR THE MIGHTY EAGLES...

Such lists are very subjective on what constitutes a 'supporter'. Looking at that, one would think Brisbane and Sydney would be rolling in money, yet according to Sydneys CEO they were on the verge of folding last year. Brisbane hasn't exactly been bringing in the money like Collingwood or West Coast have either.

Sydney and Brisbane are one team states with very underdeveloped local leagues. Ask someone in the street who they barrack for and they're likely to shrug their shoulders and name their states team. The other footballing states on the other hand not only have numerous AFL teams, but also strong local leagues which would draw the non-AFL supporting football fans.

End of the day there are two ways of measuring a teams support, either its membership, or average home game attendance. The former assumes all supporters take out memberships, whilst the latter does not account for real supporters who for some reason or another don't attend matches.

Having said that, I reckon Collingwood should realistically sit at the top of that table. You can't throw a stone into a crowd without hitting a Pies supporter.
