What exactly has Hughes done to justify this....

...getting A-team selection?...

Hrmmmm ;)

He's a very classy opener, young, and has come into the scene last domestic season scoring quite well.

What exactly has Nick Jewell done to justify his selection from some of you? That would be a more relevant question.

It's barely plausible that he's got A-team selection. It makes sense to give him a go, given he's that young, and had some decent wraps on him from u/19 level, but otherwise, he hasn't set the world on fire at first class level.

Nick Jewell's at least consistently been around for a few years now, consistently eeked out 1000 run seasons at first class level without looking too flash (usually overshadowed by Hodge, Hussey and White), has the maturity on his side, and still has a fair bit of upside to him.

What exactly has Hughes done to justify this, other than his ton in the Shield final that came on the back of better innings from better teammates?

Has he made double figures since getting A-team selection?

Well he has averaged 43.64 in 10 matches. That's pretty impressive for 19 year old. Compare that to the 31 year old Jewell's 38.29 in 41 matches. So Hughes is younger and averaging more. I know Hughes hasn't played as many matches, but seriously Jewell is 31. Maybe we should look to the future?

Oh and since getting A-team selection, he has played one game. You don't make judgments on just one game, when you do that suddenly someone like Jewell starts getting talked about.

You forgot the A-team test series, where he averaged 16 in 3 innings (48 runs, with 43 coming in one innings)

I agree with the sentiment that we should look to the future, and so far, in doing so, he hasn't shown enough to justify why we've chosen him as the future.

Remember this is the uncapped team. Jaques, Katich, Marsh and Watson, and maybe even Rogers, would all be ahead of him at the moment. But of the remaining opening batsmen in the country, Hughes is at the top of the list.

And I would say that his stats show why he has been chosen for the future. He had one average Australia A series, so? He is averaging 43 at FC level, and in 3 innings against Pakistan in the U-19's he scored 324 runs.

One average A series, and been pretty abysmal in his 3 domestic games (both forms of the game so far) so far as well.

6 games, and only one halfway respectable knock.

Surely there's better prospects his age though.

1000 run seasons?? I don't think so. 742, 694 in his last 2 seasons. There is a big gulf between 700 and 1000. That is a difference of 20 runs to your average.

The Uncapped Test XI has taken a bit of a battering this summer.

Bollinger, Siddle and McDonald are now out of the mix.

pretty tough to do a team. not going to bother with one-dayers as most guys get a go at some stage or another.

Phil Hughes
Michael Klinger
Marcus North
David Hussey
Luke Pomersbach
Dominic Thornely
Luke Ronchi
Ashley Noffke
Steve Magoffin
Bryce McGain
Ben Hilfenhaus

there is plenty of depth in the bowling - Nannes, McKay, Denton, Wright, Dorey all back ups...

EDIT: In - Ronchi, Out - Paine (oversight)

Don't forget Paine's no longer in the Tassie FC team either. His ODD form is disgraceful, but Pomersbach hasn't been completely awful in the FC arena.

It is amazing that Aaron Finch cannot get a game for Victoria. HE is the best young right hand top to middle order batsman since Michael Clarke and Ricky Ponting to have graduated from the Centre of Excellence in Brisbane and the Victorian selectors cannot give him a game.

Australian cricket is at a worrying state. NSW, South Australia and Tasmania are playing the youngsters whist Greg Shipperd is continuing to ignore Aaron Finch, Michael Hill and Aiden Bizzard in the 4 day form of the game.

Would not Australian cricket be in a better state if Victoria plays Michael Hill, Aaron Finch, James Pattinson and Aiden Bizzard in the four day game and give them some slack. THey will fail but if the selectors pick them and stick by them, they will develop into good players.

When was the last time Victoria blooded young players into the shield side and benefitted from the exercise? From 1981 to 1985, Ian Redpath decided to gamble on the following:

Dean Jones, Merv Hughes, TOny Dodemaide, Michael Dimmatina, Simon Davis, Simon O'Donnell and Paul Pistol Reiffel.

These young players represented Australia at One Day, Test and Australia A level.

And, it took 2 to 5 years for that crop of players to wear the Baggy Green test cap or Australian One Day International cap.

I think it is about time for Cricket Australia to hold a meeting with all state coaches and give them the incentive to play young players for the long term benefit of Australian cricket.

At the moment, I am struggling to name an Uncapped XI with the best 18 to 23 year olds who have not played test cricket.

THE GOVERNOR

They are still at Grade cricket, its not like they are missing out of cricket altogether

Who would you drop from the victorian side for these players
Blizzard in the 4 day comp. Please he cant even crack the one day side because of his "hit and get out" aproach

Rogers
Jewell
Hodge
Hussey
White
Mcdonald
Croswaithe
Wright
Mcgain
Harwood
Nannes

None of those players deserve to be dropped
