Bit of dispute in the backyard tonight so I decided to create this thread, basically hoping to make a BigFooty Backyard Cricket Rule Book (The BFBCRB).

I'll get the first debate going, if a ball comes off the roof, can it be caught with one hand, or is no catch allowed at all? The brother was in batting so he obviously argued for the latter but I believe I got that prick out :D

Here's a list of rules I think do not need debate.

  • One hand, one bounce.
    Two bounce, headbutt.
  • Auto-Wickie and Auto-Slip.
  • 6 and out depending on the environment, over the fence is definantly out (ball must be fetched by the batsmen).
  • No LBW (no blocking your wicket either).
  • Can't go out first ball.
  • If you hit a fragile object eg. window, fountain, grandparents etc. on the full you're out.
  • The bowler has choice of the ball if multiple balls are available.

I'll update any rules I've forgotten.

If it goes into a neighbours yard, the person who hit the ball has to fetch it too.

The thing with backyard cricket is every backyard has to have it's own unique rules and has to be a form of organised chaos. i was never a big fan of setting hard and fast rules, even within the same day they could change.

one of the backyards we had was all concrete so one hand one bounce wasn't really an option otherwise no one lasted more than about 6 balls.

another one of the boys backyard had a big dinner table that was at the perfect angle for a ball short of a length. ascii diagram below

bowler --- ~3 metres --- table ------ ~10 metres ----- batsmen

added a great dynamic to the game.

we usually had an auto wickie but if we had a high amount of numbers we might play with a keeper.

good times.

One hand off any obstacle is out (ie, house, water tank).

Balls must be swing kings, either home made or store bought.

We play auto wickie, gully, slips, backward point. Any thing that hits the fence/shrubs behind the stumps on the full, and in between point and wickie is out.

We also play indoor cricket type rules, no running, set scores for each fence. Retire on 50.

One hand, one bounce and two bounces, headbutt.

Amazing the amount of people who don't play this rule. Everyone I introduce this to loves it. Creates chaos and is hilarious. Its defi itely better suited to the more relaxed backyard cricket sessions with a beer and a barbie rather than the fierce test match contests.

Added to the list, I've heard 3 bounce flick up but we will leave it at 2.

for mine has to be hand made. knowing how to properly get a tennis ball electrical taped for optimal swing is a skill in it's own.

Extremely tough skill to perfectly master but the practice is definantly worth it

I'm fine with either, but the homemades do have a certain charm. Especially if you have a heap of them (a must) and write different names on them. On that note, there must be back up balls. Go to Big W or something and get the 27 pack for $10 or whatever it is. No more lost ball woes. Use them sparingly though, balls must still be searched for before being declared lost.

Nah shit rule, nothing's more self assuring than knocking off three mates in three balls.

As kids we had a rule where you had to yell out "crease" when you got your bat over the crease for a run and if you didn't yell out "crease" you could still be run out even if you were over the crease.

Not sure why we had that rule as it created even more arguments with guys yelling "crease" about a metre short of the crease. No third umpire to sort it out either.

We also had to yell out "crease leave" whenever we left the crease to swap ends or do some gardening on the pitch. If you left the crease without a "crease leave" you were fair game to be run out.

We had a number of different balls to bowl with. Bowlers choice (a lot of the time me vs brother). The tennis balls would be wrapped up in different tapes and cover different percentages of the surface.

We had a sweet setup. Concrete half pitched covered with spare bits of astro turf from a friends new tennis court. This created variation from cracks. Finally the old man had trees planted out in the shape of an oval to give us boundaries.

what the hell is two bounces, headbutt?

if you can headbutt the ball on the second bounce its out.

can create some funny and dangerous moments espically for in close fielders who go to try to headbutt the ball at the same time.

hit on the full into any garden bed is out, however if it bounces before entering garden bed area its automatically 2.

also played the scoring zones rule. no running

bowling must be done off 1 or 2 steps only

if a batsman charges with auto-wickie in place and misses the ball, the bowler has the chance to "stump the batsman" by standing at mid pitch and throwing the ball at the stumps

also, this..

Always played one-on-one with my brother as a kid. Will never forget the day I racked up 8/400(dec.) in a single afternoon. We used to use the soft pool cleaner pipe to round off the corners of the yard to have a proper boundary rope. heck it was sweet to launch into a cover drive and see it skip off the pool cleaner rope into the fence. "Four more silly, come at me."

No LBW? lolwut? Back in my day the bowler was judge, jury and executioner. Could never bowl more than 6 balls in a row of the same type; had to change it up between fast, medfast, offies, leggies, and a variety of left arm deliveries. Whenever the batsman would get an edge that flew to third man (ie. over the back fence), oh how the debate would rage as to whom was at fault.
