It seems as though the success of this young kid, has prompted a new generation of youtube kid singers, who all wish to make it big. Personally i think there is quite a bit of musical talent out there on youtube, but the kids who get signed up off this sort of thing, have very little say in the type of music that they make.

The "next big thing" according to youtube, is this guys cover of Paparazzi, which has earned him overnight fame, and TV interviews

Not too bad in terms of a cover.....but no doubt that the music industry will try to turn him into an RNB artist

The other main person, is Australian Cody Simpson, who appears to be going for the "Bieber" look

Now thats horrible

It appears as though the new generation of music artists, are starting young, and going to places like youtube for exposure

Good/Bad/Dont Care ?

Man you put a good looking guy who can sing on a stage and the tickets will sell. Atleast he's not using autotune.

I'm pretty sure he doesn't.

I can't believe that people actually buy this crap. It is terrible. I wonder if these girls when they are older, regret listening to this crap.

I feel sorry for Western kids.

They're stuck with Hannah Montana and Justin Beiber while Finnish kids get this

You can bet your bottom dollar this will be the case. This guy is the #1 reason, why pop music has turned to shite. Atleast Mumford & Son did the hard yards and are bringing some respectability back to top 40 music.

People like Justin Bieber give womens suffrage a bad name.

In fact, if you buy a Bieber CD you should have your right to vote taken off you.

All these artists who do the hard yards must be so pissed off at these ppl.

Hypothetical - If someone came along who wrote their own songs, but these songs were "bubblegum pop songs", and they went the YouTube route (without outside assistance) to try and gain success, would they be considered to have not "done the hard yards"?

This might not be your opinion, but it is mine that slugging out in empty clubs and being on the road is a lot harder than sitting at home with a camera and putting something on youtube.

Is this Lordi for kids? Or is it Lordi in different monster costumes?

I can see what you mean, but as long as you're writing your own music, you're a worthwhile musician IMO (as opposed to just a performer/entertainer), and there's nothing stopping non-"bubblegum pop" acts from attempting to take the YouTube route to fame. If anything, your much more likely to attract a wider audience and do it quickly in this day and age through this method than slugging it out in empty clubs. The "traditional" method might be noble, but it often doesn't pay the bills or get people the fame they desire very quickly (or sometimes at all).

but is it smarter?

I mean who heard of Ok Go until they put a up a quirky music video dancing on treadmills on youtube?

like it or not.... there are millions of bands and singers and talent will only get you so far..... many will need a gimmick to stand out from the crowd.

as for the OP, manufactured pop music is nothing new....

except now future talent have an avenue like Youtube to build an audience before getting signed.

this would give them a better position to bargain a favourable record deal

Greyson has already got 12 million youtube views in 2 weeks and has appeared on the Ellen show... they'll be fighting to sign him up.

much better position than an Australian/American Idol winner imo.

I think it would be great for bubblegum-pop musicians to release their work on youtube, as long their successful sales didn't give them the label of bubblegum-pop.

I'd heard of them before this, but outside of "indie" crowds, they were probably unknown. I saw them playing table tennis in their video for "Get Over It" in late 2002, and have liked them ever since. They dropped the ball a bit in terms of holding the mainstreams attention after the treadmill bit though, with a 5 year gap between their second (2005) and third (released earlier this year) albums.

There's actually a school of thought that suggest this kid might have already been signed to a label before the YouTube thing, and that was just a creative way of launching him worldwide.

That Cody Simpson thing is horrible. I wish auto tune was just one big machine that everyone sings in to so it could be taken out by a well aimed hijacked plane.
