We've done our fair share, Chick tagged Pavlich out of the game in the first derby. Fatty Lamb was a master at it as well. But that said, I'm pretty sure they didn't do what Judd got in the Saints game.

I'm all for eliminating all tagging. We've got to be in a bloody good situation if that occurred. Remember what happened when Ayres left Cousins untagged?

Definitely a bit of self-interest in these comments from Woosh.

With a young midfield that absolutely loves space to run, I'm quite sure Woosh would love umpires to crack down hard on opposition taggers.

That said, there's no doubt that some clubs/players have taken tagging to a whole new level in recent years. Blatantly holding and scragging blokes so that it's impossible for them to get a run at the ball isn't good for the game.

Back in the days when Banfield was regularly tagging players, he would do it just by playing smart, tough, accountable one-on-one footy. Which is perfectly fine.

Thats what tagging is meant to be about, playing defensively on your opponent. Stay close to him, block his free space, tackle him when he gets the ball. Nothing wrong with that. But when a player holds and scrags his opponent, how is it any different from a defender pulling on a leading forwards shirt to slow him down?

Of course there is self interest in those comments by Woosha, but show me which coach doesnt make them? Some of the stuff Mick Malthouse says nowadays would be the exact opposite to what he fought for when he coached the eagles. It is why Grant Thomas praised Baker last year, yet would be the first to cry foul if the situation was reversed.

There's tagging and tagging.

Being accountable is one thing- certainly there's nothing wrong with players following their opponent rather than the ball to ensure that whenever they do get a possession they're under pressure. That makes perfect sense.

What Baker did to Judd last year wasn't at all within the rules of the game. Last time I checked you're not allowed to hold the man. Good for Steven for getting away with, I suppose, but there wouldn't be an issue if the umpires actually enforced the rules.

One of the things that really gets my goat is how the laws of the game are interpreted differently depending on where you stand on the ground- a defender holding a forward will often get picked up, a midfielder holding another midfielder, or a forward holding a defender, never.

90% of the comments from coaches are in the interest of the team.......

but as people have said if our player gets tagged out of the game through good tough accountable one-on-one footy than that happens, and well done to the other guy.

But the way Judd got tagged out of the St Kilda game was clearly illegal. but that happens as well i guess, and its no use crying over something that happens 6 months ago, but hopefully it won't be allowed to happen this year.....

Think we need to define the difference between tagging and scragging

Tagging - hard running, accountable football, where the main goal is to limit your opponents possesions by not giving any space.

Scragging - Holding, pulling and generally restraining your opponent off the ball outside the lkaws of the game.

Im all for tagging. It requires good players to take their game up a level, hard sheperds from teammates etc, to free the man up. On the other side of the coin, if you have a good tagger (ie Fatty Lamb) you can seriously negate an opposition players impact on the game.

Its the underhanded crap, usually performed by sacrificial hacks, that ****s me and needs to be cracked down on.
