Roast The Brownlow has no credibility left

It's not just inside mids. The award, especially in the last decade, has been dominated by one specific type of inside mid. If you aren't at ground level winning hard ball and clearances, you are no chance. Players that burst out of stoppages or rotate forward while still playing inside mid are less likely to poll votes

Dangerfield and Martin, two of the better winners of the past decade or so....why...because they applied scoreboard pressure consistently.

I think tonight is the final nail in the coffin for a lot of fans and talking heads alike. Just unforgiveable on multiple fronts. Too many to even list.

The vote inflation is also sickening and ridiculous. Rowell had a fine season but let's get serious. 39 votes? 45 for Cripps last year? Soon the winner will be clocking up 50/60. It's lost all meaning.

Yes, I think that will be the last time I bother with the Brownlow. Some serious questions need to be asked by the AFL as to its relevance, and the way it is presented. The 3-2-1 system is an anachronism and needs review. I know it's an umpires' award, but are they the best qualified people to be determining what is touted as the most Prestigeous individual award in football?

From halfway into the count, it became obvious it was between Daicos and Rowell. Every round, the second last match read out was the Collingwood game, the last match being the Gold Coast match, all done to create suspense and drama in true television style. Daicos evens the score, Rowell jumps ahead, and it happened round after round. Quickly race through the other 7 matches and then slow down for the Collingwood and Gold Coast games.

This indicates to me, that in order to set it up, people HAD to know who won the award before the count started. And this being the case, it proves to me the danger of people being able to bet on a race that has already been won.

Add to the fact only midfielders have any chance at all, the award has become rather dull. Nope, that's it for me. Something needs to change for me to watch it in future. Incidentally, Mark and Goal of the Year, was that a stark reminder as to how dull the game has become. An average mark, and a goal from a player running straight at goal from 50 metres, a routine occurrence you see every week.
Yeah agree Mark and goal of the year was very average indeed.

Not really much of an outrage when put like that is it?

I started following VFL in the 80's. Before that I used to watch soccer in Europe. This and the AA always seemed dumb to me.

Was better in the 70's and before?

Yeah look I'm usually in the 'if it ain't broke don't fix it' camp, but those st kilda melbourne votes just leave no room for doubt. It's broke, it needs fixing.

The umpires simply cannot be trusted with this in future. I dont know what you replace it with but it's farcical having the most prestigious award in the game depend on choices made by people who are outright delusional.
Farcical. Like the actual game so warped and bereft of equality.

I would say yes based purely on the fashion.

Came to post exactly this.

If the st kilda melbourne voting was an isolated hiccup you could perhaps forgive them, but when you see that 21 players were voted best on ground by BOTH coaches (i.e 10 vote games) and got zero brownlow votes, that seals it. Throw away the concept and start from scratch. I'd be happy to go with keeping the coach's votes secret and just basing it off those.

We have a Leigh Matthews Trophy which determines who the best player is.

Bont has won it three times, Gary Ablett jnr has won it five times.

I’m obviously very disappointed that Nick didn’t win, but fair play to Rowell on winning the award.

But NWM receiving 2 votes against Melbourne is demonstrative of how farcical the Brownlow has become. It’s increasingly losing credibility from supporters each year.

Yes, but it doesn't lend itself as well to a replacement for the Brownlow compared to the coach's award does due to the way the voting works. I love the idea of brownlow night with the round by round, and the fact I've got no idea who will win beforehand. So I'd like those kept, it is just the umpires voting part which needs to go. I also like the fact you can't thump people and still qualify, although I think the way the way sanctions have changed over the years means it needs a rethink. One idea is to only look at intentional acts, and disregard careless acts, no matter how many weeks they get. Also do away with 'low' impact intentional acts, and perhaps consider ditching medium too, although that might need a bit more subtlety.

💯 the game is a shadow of its former glory, so sad as it used to be the best game in the world.

Leigh Matthews Trophy goes to the biggest media hype player. Most AFL players don't pay any attention to how players in other teams are going outside of their opponents for the next game. And then they're looking at tapes not just waching games. Its the most useless award of them all.

And its just asking them to vote once at the end of the year.

Yep… but the umpires are supposedly dopes who overrate midfielders…

Face it, everybody in football has the same view.
