The Brownlow lost its credibility years ago when it decided to only award votes to midfielders.

That the greatest players to ever play the game like Ablett Snr, Matthews, Carey etc never won the games highest honour just shows what a joke the award has always been.
It's a best and fairest award. You could reasonably argue none of those players were fair.

Are you telling me though that in none of his playing career was Buddy the best player in the league?
People need to stop viewing the Brownlow as an indicator for the best player of the year. It's not that, it's never been that.

A 32 Brownlow vote year doesn't mean you had a bigger impact than in a 24 brownlow vote year.

Plus it's subjective, voted on by people with no access to stats (which is a good thing).

The quirky outcomes the Brownlow throws up is what makes the medal special. The last thing we need is for it to turn into an award that's given to the same player who wins the MVP and the Coaches votes award.

Probably, but was he also the fairest? The Brownlow medal is a reflection of the fairest and best player over the season. Nobody is more qualified to adjudicate over the fairness of players than umpires who are at the coalface.

I would have to agree those 3 are arguably the best players ever to play AFL footy and if they were reported they lose the fairest part but they weren’t reported in many of the years they played so that part is clearly covered

The award has absolute zero credibility

Yeah because Wines had a better year than Botempelli

Get out of the Port Adelaide bath water Kane.
(Haven’t you heard, Kane hates Port Adelaide now?)

Stats aren’t everything, but it’s far easier to defend a position on the Brownlow WITH big stats rather than without them.
35+ possessions: 7 games to 1. 18 votes (6x3) to 3 (1x3)
30-34 poss: 7 games to 8. 12 votes (2x3) to 15 (5x3)
25-29 poss: 7 games to 9. 6 votes (0x3) to 15 (3x3)
20-24 poss: 1 game to 1. No votes
19- poss: 0 games to 3. No votes

  • Clearly Wines got more of the football, more often, and got votes through sheer volume of the ball.
  • Clearly Bontempelli got less of the ball, but was more damaging with it and got recognised with votes for lower possession games. Hence a higher votes per game average at each possession band, esp in those “good” 25-29 possession games.
  • Clearly Bontempelli’s 4 low possession games (21, 18, 15, 15) whilst not an issue normally, ultimately cost him compared to Wines who never recorded less than 24 in ANY game.
  • Clearly neither player had teammates take too many votes from them, 52 votes by Bulldogs players, 55 by Port Adelaide. This reflects Port Adelaide winning 2 more games H&A that year.

But the vibe is that because Bontempelli has had the better career, and gets the Vic media love, he deserved the season award. Does Wines getting one make up for prior years when both Tredrea and Gray had Brownlow quality years but were criminally undervalued by umpires? No, not really.

In any event, you can argue all you want about whether Bontempelli had a better year, but trying to argue that Wines didn’t have a Brownlow worthy one is just ignorant.
