While its way too early re:Kemp SOS had a weakness in taking injury prone players in the hope they'd come good.

- Marchbank
- Pickett
- McGovern
- Martin
- Garrett
- Setterfield

While I understand some of these were moonshots who cost peanuts I would hestitate to see any of these as a success.

I would not have drafted Kemp after an ACL.

Yeah personal opinion only, but I'd never draft after an ACL.

A childhood friend of mine was drafted by the lions and had 3 or 4 of them back to back. Even after the 1st was healed he said it never felt right. Caused him ankle problems as well surprisingly.

There are plenty of success stories too.

Shaun Burgoyne the pick of the bunch, has had more than reasonable return from one.

True but it's like taking a 50:50 chance on a draft pick which is already a 50:50 chance.

In terms of injury Michael Owen (Liverpool & England) admitted he was never the same player after a hamstring tear nevermind something that effects the.structure of knee.

I've got positivity about Setterfield if he gets through this year but as a mid not a winger.

King makes some interesting points, many of which would seem valid

What does confuse me, as with much of the media, 2 games ago when the Dockers played us, he labelled their effort poor despite a similar number of injuries to us

2 week later he gives them a glowing endorsement

Media have always been in the now
You’re only as good as your last game period in this competition. Remember
Worst case scenario is that the is a max of a 10 percent differential each year no matter who you compare with. So it’s all pretty relative.
you either trade in, drop dead wood, I r play youth that have potential.
mall this young side old side bs is exactly that. Bs
Either get your management team right amd the recruiters and coaches etcetera or heads should roll after x years.
mid anyone isn’t great at their job, people get the sack. Reality check.

Liked for the Setters comment.

ACLs are very different for all players

Libba has had 2, Jacovich, NICNAT 2, Walker all went on to have decent careers after an ACL

Struggling to understand this

There is no excuse these days. Nothing is a given but it’s more 70/30
The recruiters know everything now.

Again if you have a good team they can see past the crap and know what type of player they want.

I don’t know whether this the right thread but I’m watching On The Couch and Garry Lyon‘s comments about Murphy and Carlton were stirring. Get Garry down to talk to the players. He is passionate but smart and experienced. I wonder why he never coached?

I guess that's that then.

Whether it's a calculated risk or not... the risk taker is still responsible.

If Kemp doesn't reach his potential it's an absolute failure. He dropped in the draft for one reason - injuries, so several other teams "calculated" that the risk wasn't worth it.

Burton and Lever also drifted due to severe injuries, that's common

Some recruiters/clubs get so caught with what a player can add in the now, rather than the possible upside, even with injury

I think upside recruiting gets you in trouble. Give me a Kane Lambert, Michael Gibbons or Dayne Zorko any day. All guys that were ignored for years due to perceived lack of "upside".

Easy in hindsight I guess, but I also have a preference for pure footballers.

Spot on that article the old guys are not good enough. We need to go youth and guys to play in their best positions.

because carlton's performances have been such a huge secret the past 20 years..........

Oh Thy .. why you do this?

I’m talking more specifically about this year and the lack of identity/brand, the confusion about where we’re at and where we’re going.. the way this is reflected in selections and line-ups... the ‘road to nowhere’... you know - the great David Byrne or some bs
