I am prepared to level the heat at certain players as we do pretty frequently, but it’s now at the point where our coaching panel led by Goodwin isn’t focusing in on the deficiencies. The players at this level will follow what they’ve been taught in pre season and with what our strategy is. They can’t help if we are stacked with inside midfielders.

We are now 1-4 and looking like a bottom 4 finisher. I’d not be confident against Carlton next week, a team we beat by 100+ last year. This simply has to be addressed. Who were the outside players we picked up in the draft period last year? We got our KPD which is great but we are still lacking so much power in the middle.

Right now picking Lewis is only holding us back. I’d rather have Stretch in purely to play outside or even Baker. I know we can’t help the Lever & May situation, but without a KPD we are going to get destroyed. We’ve got Richmond next week; Riewoldt and Lynch. One of those 2 will kick 6. I mean I feel sorry for Frost, he is what he is.

It’s also not helping that between Hore, Jetta and Hibberd that Hore is our best performing defender. So the only thing I can think of is to bring in Petty or Keilty, nothing else is working. We also need to bring back Stretch or pick Baker. We just need some speed. One or both of the Wagner’s has to go. And Spargo I’d keep purely because I am done with Garlett.

But whatever happens, Goodwin has to try something new. If I were him I’d be running with a faster side and looking at updating our KPD stocks.

Dear Simon,

Why do we look like the unfittest team in the league? Why do our players make the most fundamental skill errors? Why do our players constantly slip over? Why do our players overcook the handball so much that we actually handballed it through the goals in the 3rd quarter? Why does the team constantly shit the bed as favourites? Why does the club constantly lose at the MCG? Why are we still having the goalless quarter problem? Why does our defence look even worse than previously shaky incarnations under your tenure? Why were you re-signed for 4 years?

If you don’t have any answers - it wouldn’t surprise.

**** off,

Johnny K xo
Yes goalless quarters are a massive issue amongst everything else you pointed out but I want to address that one. First of all we kicked the first goal within a minute after that it was 3 goals to 12. Then we kicked the first goal of the second fairly early but didn't kick another until early in the last so basically you could say we went goalless for a half. I can't think of any team that is that dysfunctional up forward or even ever. How is it that every goal is hard work? Yet saints and every other team have so much time and space and no pressure what's so ever. Even when we do get some space we managed to completely stuff it up constantly. It's been an obvious problem for a while but winning has covered it up. Take the geelong game in the elimination final. We dominated the second quarter but kicked about 5 behinds in a row and Geelong went forward 2 and scored twice. Our game plan works only if we score goals. If teams absorb the so called pressure once your through it's easy scoring. It's rinse and repeat until the opposition is comfortable and ease off. I'm not sure if we can't execute the game plan or the game plan isn't effective anymore. The game tends to move quickly and we look like we missed the bus.

obviously Goody and the boys dined out on the top 4 finish. the Prelim wasnt an abberation, it was a ******* reality check.

p.s can anyone recall anyone laying a tackle this year that had any venom in it?
Salem has laid a few, he runs in a straight line at the player and nails them, everyone else dances around trying to catch them.

In saying that Salem has been by far one of our only shining lights this year.

I think TMac has to go back to defence now. If not to fill in until May or Lever returns, then just to try and get some confidence. If we roll out with the same shit again, Pert should sack the whole coaching staff on the spot. Lewis has to retire immediately. He's done. Anyone with pace has to play in the coming weeks. Jeffy, Lockhart, Stretch, Baker and ANB. Despite their deficiencies they have something needed in this new format. Wagners, Spargo, Lewis have to go back to the VFL. Concentrate on defensive running and restricting opposition scoring instead of kicking big scores. Bring in some blokes who can run the flanks and wings with speed and who can actually put pressure on opposition ball carriers. Some hard decisions need to be made. We'll see if Goodwin has the brains and the balls in the coming weeks..

Where's Pert in all of this? He's been awfully quiet?
When the CEO starts commenting on a down side you know you're in the shit. Pert can't say anything without making a problematic headline. If he backs Goodwin you get "full support of the board" memes, if he is critical then the club is unstable.

Look, this year's a write off but if we jump the gun and fall into old habits then this club is doomed to another era of bullshit.

This year will be the first real test the club has had since Roos came on board. Hopefully we've got the people in place who know how to deal with it.

We need pace. It’s that simple. I posted in another thread that Wagner x2 and Lewis need to go to be replaced by Keilty, Baker and Stretch.

As you say we might need TMac to go down back against Richmond where in that case, Keilty wouldn’t come in and maybe Garlett. Forward line could be;

Jones Weidemann Melksham
Spargo Petracca Garlett

I’d play Trac from FF for a while. Our defence is getting butchered so maybe you’re right, Tom goes back.

He was allright I just know that his 16 disposal ok game wont make a lick of difference.
But when Jordan Lewis and both Wagners are our bottom 3 players, and we are 1-4, we’ve got to make a change. I mean why even bother with Lewis now? Stretch was actually going ok until he got injured last year. Keilty can play as a defender.

At the end of the day changing your bottom 3 players makes no ******* difference at all.

We need to work out how to get Tmac, Petracca, Weid, Oliver, Viney, Hibberd etc to play well. The bottom end won't change 40 point losses.

How will Stretch play well when Oliver's handballs barely leave his own hand, how can Garlett Crumb when Tmac doesn't contest etc

Goodwin said things are heading in the right direction and elements of our game worked, itll turn for us apparently and hes backing us in.

**** off, everyone on this board saw this this coming with the player we selected and their positions. When go 1-5 next week there isnt a hope in hell we win 12 of the last 16 in the season... we cant even play on the MCG

Gysberts2Bate you ready to admit the G might be a problem?
Do you think we'd have beaten St Kilda at a different ground yesterday?

Honestly with that effort not a chance - but the big ground doesn't help with our lack of pressure/effort.

I'd like to see tmac dropped full stop, he has no place in the team as a defender, and while the knee jerk is to pull him back, Goodwin and co have to coach for getting lever and may back in a few weeks. We need a KPF. He needs to get some confidence beating up on people at vfl level.

Well I think TMac needs to go back. I know you don’t agree, but I think with Frost and Hore as our KPD we are going to continue getting assaulted with no support. I’d play Petracca at FF and get Weidemann more involved as a roaming CHF.

Hibberd & Jetta? Well I am puzzled mate, stumped. Old? Unfit? Slow? Burnt out? No idea. Viney is starting really slowly. Is his foot bothering him? Is he acerbically fit enough? It’s a conundrum.

We can not drop him. We absolutely need him to help our backline.

The G is a huge issue. We can not use the space, identify it, and run through it. If we had a hot spot of where our mids congregated its literally all around a stoppage. No spread. Any side that can’t soread and has no leg speed can’t win at the G.

it's time to call a spade a spade, last year we were the worst prelim side i can recall- we beat up on the shit teams, looked dog shit against anyone half decent..played a few good games to finish the season. Granted we played well against Geelong, average against a cooked Hawks, I dont need to go into the week after.

A 4year extension!?!? Goodwin deserved 2 years max, no coach other than Clarkson should command a 4 year extension.

we'll be flat out just to miss the bottom four.

We are cooked all over the ground- Gawn wins the tap out, why do our mids wait until the other teams got position until they ruddy move?! ******* dive in their you campaigners.

Someone lead into space, even better IF someone does, ******* hit them up. Under 10's around jog past us.

The defence leaks harder than I do after ive had 25 beers, but I recon the mids and forwards leave the back six out to dry.

and oh yeah the the coaches ******* suck.
Last years PF side reminds me of North of 15. Twitches of life before falling off a cliff because the coaching panel couldn’t adapt.

Just saying bring in leg speed is to short sighted. Yes we aren’t quick but the main issue at the moment is a complete lack of cohesion of team defence. Players just seem to keep pushing up and overcommit only to land in no mans land. Another big issue is wining ground balls inside 50m, the ball just pings out of the forward 50m the mids roll in to defend once half decent possession from the opposition an all of sudden Jetta, Hibberd, frost have 10 players and 100m of ground to defend. The defence must start inside the forward 50m with some kind of forward pressure.

QUOTED FOR ******* TRUTH. We have to plan a team game and looking at individual players is all well and good but this sits at a level above. NO ONEs defense looks good with the entries we let happen.
