Brett Ratten says hi![]()
He still has a year to go on his contract.
My exact observations on that useless rat, Libba. As did most of the other coaches.
His contract was not renewed at either Hawthorn or the Saints and the general opinion was that he had a negative effect on their forwardlines.
There were numerous threads during the season about how disfunctional our forwardline was, even taking into account our injuries.
Try searching for "John Barker" on the forum and see how many negative posts come up.
I can't recall any negativity posted about any of the other assistants who now no longer have a job.
Pretty sure Harks also reported that at training he seemed overly casual and looked like he was playing "kick to kick" most of the time rather than concentrating on instilling a structure.
So all in all, I just think it is very strange that he one of the very few assistants who has retained their position when logic would dictate he should have been the first to go.

Sounds good to meThe HUN is reporting Luke Webster will be appointed the coach of the Northern Blues.

I know that several of the senior players LOVE Barker and are unequivocal that he is by far the best of the assistant coaches.
Well if he is really as good as the players say and we still have a very disfunctional forwardline, then we are in more trouble than I thought we were.
At the end of the day, forward lines look far better if the midfield is dominating and getting the ball in quickly.
It doesn't look too exciting thoughThis.
Also. Walker was injured or unfit for much of the year, and was given a role much further up the ground. Garlett had a poor year, and on top of that, missed a lot of easy goals. Not to mention Waite only played half the year. As did Hampson.
Play a fit forwardline of something like:
Garlett, Waite, Armfield
Walker, Hampson, Betts
for 22 games and I reckon it would function pretty well
Speaking of Betts how many more goals does everyone think he can snag up next year if our forward line stays solid?

It is overly simplistic to think that an apparently dysfunctional forward line is the fault of the forward line coach alone. In fact I think it is extremely difficult for outsiders to assess the work of the assistant coaches - for all we know Ratten might have regularly overruled Barker and dictated what structures he wanted inside 50. At the end of the day, forward lines look far better if the midfield is dominating and getting the ball in quickly.
Malthouse's 'three tall forward' structure will give Barker far more to work with than the Waite/resting ruckman combination of 2012.

ANDREW McLeod's return to full-time work in the AFL is unfolding at Carlton.
McLeod has not had a full-time role at an AFL club since he retired at Adelaide as a much-celebrated player in 2010.
Since then he has worked in the AFL-SANFL programs for community and indigenous football development and this year as a part-time skills coach at Adelaide and assistant coach to Bassett at Norwood.
The Blues will have a new assistant coaching panel after Paul Williams, Mark Riley and Alan Richardson all parted company with the club following the sacking of Brett Ratten.
