If our number 1 draft pick of 1999 came a year later we would have Riewoldt instead of Fraser

If our 2000 pick 3 came a year later we would have Judd instead of Didak

If our 2005 pick 2 and pick 5 came a year earlier we would have Franklin and Roughead instead of Pendlebury and Thomas

And lastly if Geelong had just went for a key position in 2006 we'd have Selwood instead of Reid

The side would look like this:

Shaw Roughead Maxwell
O'Brien Cloke Goldsack
Swan Judd Sidebottom
Macaffer Riewoldt Davis
Franklin Anthony Medhurst

Jolly Selwood Ball

Dick McCarthy Beams Wood

Lockyer O'Bree Prestigiacomo

If the Queen had balls she'll be the King.... I'm still shitty that we traded pick 3 and clinton king to richmond for mckee and pick 7 (Danny Roach) in 1999 when we could have picked up Pav....

and joel corey went at 8!

Well let me castrate the Queen and soothe your raging plums, we could never have got Pavlich with pick 3. Freo only went for Hasleby first because Richmond announced they were after a runner (either Hasleby or Fiora) Freo rated Hasleby and knew Pav would be available later with us out of the picture, they knew we were after a key position (hence Danny Roach) and would have picked Pav with pick 3 and Hasleby or Fiora later if we had kept pick 3 instead of giving it to Richmond.

In hindsight yes Pav and Corey were the ones to go for over Fraser and Roach but my initial examples are the ones that really annoy me because it wasn't the pick that screwed us it was just the fact that the pick came a year late or early to pick up several one in a generation type superstars. :(

If my numbers had come up last week I'd be a millionnaire... if's, but's, maybe's... it is what it is

Yeah that's several million to one, these picks were a bee's dick off elite superstars that would have already produced flags by now. But point taken, nothing to do now but kick the cat.

Maybe you're right..
I mean, How many Collingwood supporters do you know of that have won 1st division in Tattslotto? Or found that huge bag of money on the side of the road that's clearly drug money yet richmond supporters hand in? Then there's the Grand final appearances that we should have won? I think you may be on to something here Gary.:thumbsu:

Indeed I am, I mean how many Geelong or Hawthorn supporters do you know that have seen their club win a flag, the chances are astronomical.

But let me pose a different question lest the "if" police completely implode from the gargantuan calculations required to factor in all variables.

How much better is that team considering we'd have to give up Didak, Pendlebury, Fraser, Thomas and Reid and would it match Geelong and St Kilda?

The biggest mystery is why would you have Macaffer in this side? is he related or something??????????????????

When the big Mac attacks you'll all ask for pies with that.

Is there a point to this "what if" rubbish?

File this one under God loves us

If our number 1 draft pick of 1999 came a year earlier we would have Headland instead of Fraser

If our 2000 pick 3 came a year earlier we would have Fiora instead of Didak

If our 2005 pick 2 and pick 5 came a year later we would have Gumbleton and Boak instead of Pendlebury and Thomas

And lastly if St Kilda had just went for a key position in 2006 we'd have Armitage instead of Nathan Brown

See how easy it is to play the hypothetical game?

Easy yes but you didn't construct the team so I'm taking points off for sheer laziness, and just quietly Gumbleton and Boak may turn out all right.

But the part you'll really have to explain to me is losing 10 of our last 11 Grand Finals and God loving us?

The point was that things can just as easily be a lot worse, rather than a lot better. The grass is always greener on the other side, but what's often left out is that over the back fence, the grass can be pretty dead.

And you'd realistically entertain trading Thomas and Pendlebury for Gumbleton and Boak?

If Brisbane didn't turn up we would have had 2 more flags.

I really don't see the point in threads like this? Ah the off season I guess .... ?

I don't mind them turning up, it's the AFL manufacturing flags for them to hype Aussie Rules in a rugby state and costing us 2 flags that pisses me off no end.

Hypotheticals about the future are completely different to wondering about the past.

These predictions, at the end of next season, can be reflected on, and they can also be used to temper/enflame expectations about the upcoming season.

There will never be any resolution to the discussion of totally arbitrary "what if" situations about the past... There's no reason to ask "what if" the particular situations you posed were true, compared to "what if" we got Gary Ablett Jr somehow, or "what if" Nathan Buckley was 10 years younger and still playing for our team, or "what if" Alan Didak was 6 inches taller and played in the ruck.

There's an endless stream of these questions, and none of them are any more answerable than others, so they only serve to rustle up frustration.

Yes one is "what if" past and one is "what if" future, good point.

Endless stream? why the dramatics?

Rustle up frustrations? I don't know any Collingwood supporters that precious.

Jesus if we can put up with the blizzard of Dave the Man threads we are obviously impervious to frustration!
