Batman Begins was equally well received but it just didn't have the audience. I would argue that had Ledger not died it would still be a huge hit, maybe not as much buzz around it, however there would still a much bigger audience than Begins because of the quality of Ledger's performance and the return to a more traditional Batman movie. I.e. big budget, explosions, familiar villains.

And here we go.........................

I liked it and Heath dying gave it incredible publicity.

Its a pity he died Im sure he would have appeared in a sequel !

Definitely. Two-Face was killed off in the movie because it was suppose to be The Joker who would 'go on' to make possible appearances in future movies.

I'd classify it as my favorite movie of 2008 and up there as being my favorite movie of the last 10 years. Doesn't quite hit the mark to be the best superhero movie of all time (Superman will always be #1 to me) or best movie ever (Rambo, Robocop, Terminator, Die Hard, Lethal Weapon etc all get in the way).

I liked it well enough to see it multiple times over the course of the cinema run, and watched it multiple times once the dvd and blu-ray were released. I havn't watched it or Begins for many months now (around early March), didn't want to view it too many times to give it the Terminator 2 effect (i saw it one too many times and as a result i didn't watch it for several years due to tiring of it).

I thought the storyline was good, echoing previous comments i thought Rachel Dawes was the worst acted in the movie, thought the same in Begins (although that was due to Katie Holmes) i'm thinking that the writers just didn't know how to write about female characters.

Ideally would have loved the early notes about the storyline to be true (with Harvey not becoming Two Face until a third movie), but oh well. The film was great, but in hindsight i do feel it was too jam packed towards the end.

Agree with Double07

Decent action movie, great performance by Ledger. By wayyyyyyyyy overrated imo.
Lets be honest. Its overrated cos Ledger died. If he were still alive, he may have still won the oscar but this film would be rated alot lower.

It was no better than Batman Begins.

I disagree. If Ledger hadn't died people wouldn't be so cynical. Due to his death you have every man and his dog who probably wouldn't have been attracted to the movie in the first place chip their 2 cents in on the movie. A few of these people are in this thread. It's still clearly one of the best movies in it's genre (action/blockbuster not just superhero) this decade. Let's not forget this decade is hardly a golden era.

People seem to be confusing buzz and hype over the actual critical reception it received. Not many people are running around calling it a cinematic masterpiece, but it's hard pressed to find a better movie of it's genre in recent times.

I've never been into superhero movies but I can still enjoy a good one. I thought Iron Man and Transformers were much better and more exciting in the special effects department.

Gladiator, The Bourne Series, Kill Bill 1&2 are some almost recent films in the same genre as TDK which I would rate higher aswell.

What genre is that? The Dark Knight is much more of a slick crime thriller as opposed to merely a superhero action film. Kill Bill Volume 2 has barely any similarities to The Dark Knight, Gladiator is more of a drama than an action film, The Bourne films are the only ones there that have the greatest focus on action scenes, and perhaps Kill Bill Volume 1.

Transformers' special effects are trash, they may be technically impressive, but they're not aesthetically pleasing at all. The special effects in Dark Knight may be few and far between, but they are still quality, just not as flashy or as numerous as in Transformers and Iron Man. The work done with Two-Face, the look of Gotham city and the chase through Gotham are all outstanding.

As for Ledger. His performance would've been heralded as a masterclass regardless of whether he was dead or alive. His death merely brought more attention to what was always going to be a huge box office hit.

Most overrated film ever. It moves from one ludicrous set piece to the next without ever making any sense. Ledger's performance was great, though, as was the soundtrack.

Christian Bale destroys movies with that stupid ass face and awful acting. Terrible Bat-voice.

How does it not make sense?

MDB > Daylight > DK

Probably the worst paced movie I've ever seen, by the end of the movie it was just like kill her already or I'll do it. Great acting was the only thing that saved it, at least TDK was entertaining.

Well... 1) In the scene where the Joker turns up to Bruce Wayne's penthouse, Batman jumps out the window to save Rachel and then... the movie cuts to some other scene. WTF happened to the Joker and the other armed criminals that were in his penthouse and aiming to kill Harvey Dent? Did they just decide to go home since Batman had left? The audience is apparently meant to think that was the case...

2) The Joker appears in Harvey Dent's hospital room, gives him a gun and tries to convince him to join his side... this is after he totally wrecked the guy's face and killed the woman he loved. AND Dent takes the gun and turns on the good guys rather than the guy who wrecked his life. It's simply unbelievable.

I could do about 10 more but I don't want to waste my time. Apparently Heath Ledger's great acting papered over the plot holes and the bad performances of the other actors.

Looking back now I think Batman Begins is the better film of the two, although The Dark Knight was a great film it almost was an action movie not a batman movie whereas Begins was a pure batman film that was less focused on villains and more on the character development of Bruce Wayne/ Batman.

Heath aside it was just another Marvel movie, not even as good as Batman Begins.

You liked Daylight? Talk about plot holes and Sly's ranting. How did the dog hold its breath underwater? :D;)

In all seriousness, I thought DK was a little over-rated too. I enjoying watching Chicago in all its glory though. Just a beautiful city.

Are you serious? Do you not understand Two-Face?

they were both good movies i am looking forward to the next one apparently Johnny depp has been asked to portay the riddler and phillip seymour hoffman is to portray the penguin, that in mind the next batman movie should make up for the Dark knight which seems everyone is shitting on .

I remember reading an article during the post-production of this film, saying that The Joker was skateboarding around Gotham.

I've seen that fake photo of him skating over Batman, but nothing else.

Does anyone know what happened to those plans? Did they simply scrap scenes of him skateboarding?
