The Dogs were very good tonight but at one stage the Hawls were 18pts out of this with plenty of forward forays....yet time and again Buddy Franklin plays body on body, flays his arms round looking for a free kick instead of making the play and looks stupid doing it. Its why he struggles on the monster fullbacks.....for opposite reasons its exactly why the Dogs/Cats will never play a Lake/Scarlett on Riewoldt....they can't.

Buddy has NO tank.

Hes a great player Franklin but when he's cold he is ENTIRELY out of the game. Riewoldt doesnt do this. He works up the ground, doubles back and makes something happen - bringing others into the match.

For Franklin IMO he needs to get an engine but more importantly, he needs to stop the body on body wrestle, use his enormous speed and get some tapes of Riewoldt leading....and re-leading.....

Leave the body stuff to Roughead - whose very good at it and the Hawks fwd who actually worries me more.

I know the Dogs had the midfield covered and this impacted delivery etc etc but the Hawks had enough clean entries and Franklin didnt look dangerous at all.

he got pushed in the back by lake like 3 or 4 times, and cannoned into by morris who had eyes only for the man, and this is just in the 2nd quarter alone. this is the reason he'll struggle to win a 1 on 1 contest, because defenders can do whatever they want to him without fear of penalty

Riewoldt is a freak with his running capacity. Franklin will learn but it's funny watching him grab the ball and run at the opposition and try to go straight through them.

Lake was good tonight.

Franklin is also a pretty ordinary pack mark, Riewoldt is awesome overhead. Franklin is a great player but he has limitations, which is thankful because if he you can exploit his strengths he can be awesome.

All fwds get pushed under the ball - see Jonathon Browne weekly. This is a lame excuse.

Buddy needs to realise he aint J Browne and friggin lead - get a tank and lead. He has more speed than any fwd in the game and is rooted after 10mins.

Spare me the "he just gets a bad wrap from umps" rubbish - he doesnt make the play.....he stages for the kick in a wrestle time and again....maybe the umps see that??

Thats what gets me Aussie - he plays a game style for mine...that belies his natural athletic strenghts....the guys is 6f15 and can run like a rabbitt....so he tries to wrestle monsters?..

Dumb.

Maybe it says a lot about players like Riewoldt's mental strength to push through pain barriers for second and third efforts....

Myth. When Franklin won the coleman he lead the league in contested marks.

To the OP, whatever, Franklin will go down in history as a better player then Riewoldt.

Riewoldt is arguably the fittest player in the whole comp so it's a massive jump for Franklin to reach or get near his level. I can't remember, but was Riewoldt always a hard runner when he was Franklin's age?

I agree, I too am glad he plays dumb footy cause if he got a tank and got out in front more often than not hed be scary....

I remember the first time I watched him live and I thought...this guy is going to be THE BEST player in the game bar none........and tonight again Im watching him play dumb 2 years later....

Riewoldt is better overhead.

To be fair on Franklin, he did play on one of the best defenders in the league in Brian Lake tonight compared to last week. Franklin played into the hands of Lake by staying home in the goal square, where Lake could out mark and out spoil Franklin. Franklin should have moved up the ground, where he can lose Lake.

I hate to say this, but Riewoldt is a gun and has a better tank than Franklin.

But, it's only the Pre-Season though, but boy, the Bulldogs look good though. They look so much potent with Hall and Murphy in the line up. They are my prediction for the NAB Cup premiership.

Pack mark and contested marks are two different things. When he is on a lead and someone tries to spoil, makes contact with him but he hangs on then that is a contested mark. But to grab a mark when there are two or three groups of players there then he struggles to, Riewoldt just seems to get those marks with ridiculous ease.

Such a strong retort..........Im not so sure....I think Buddy will go down as one of those gifted players but inconsistent players who had good years and went missing for some (see last year - he was ordinary and the Hawks only just missed the 8...they werent Melbourne). At the moment hes no different to Fevola - brilliantg on his day....on his off day....non-existant. Footy has been littered with hundreds of them.

Hes a match winner no doubt - Riewoldt delivers for us week in week out and is ALWAYS able to get in the game....I think history will remember him as one of the consistent greats.

A premiership is certainly the difference.

Please lets not compare these two over a NAB CUP game. Franklins done more than rooey at same age ... doesnt mean he'll do more by end of career BUT ... this has to be the year for Reiwoldt.

If you are trying to say reiwoldts fitter YES sure he is but he's the fittest guy in AFL, possibly Australia!! ;)

Fact is Reiwoldt needs to win the flag this year as captain to be considered one of the ALL time greats alongside Carey etc. If he were to get AA captain again and win the flag and another best and fairest making it what 6? I dont think anyone could say otherwise.

I'm tipping Reiwoldt to go down in history moreso than franklin. The next couple of years will see to that.

67 goals is ordinary? Thats a great year for Riewoldt.

Your an idiot for even trying to compare him to Fevola.

At 22 Fevola was shit and still getting pissed and in trouble every 2nd week.

Buddy at 22 had a Coleman, a best and Fairest and a premiership.

Spin it what ever way you like but I'm telling you Buddy will go down as a better player than Riewoldt.

He definitely gets a bad run from the umpires, and this was exemplified perfectly in the 2nd quarter when Morris was allowed to just run right through him when Franklin was in a marking contest. Morris had absolutely no eyes for the ball.

Franklin already leads, and makes repeat leads, etc. He doesn't have the tank of N. Riewoldt, but very few players do.

The only problem with Franklin tonight was the delivery from the midfielders. Any forward who plays as deep as Franklin did will struggle when the midfielders simply bomb it at a 2 on 1 contest.

like he did in the grand final?

To be fair Franklin wasn't great in 2008 GF either. We all know Reiwoldt was injured but the weather obviously didnt suit him. Its funny a sunny day reiwoldt kicks 5 and saints win he becomes legend - the little things ey. He still did some good things anyway bashed and crashed set up schnieder and milne he shouldve had 12 assists but they fn missed ey.
Its alright its alright .... redemption can be made....:o

Missing the point.

We aint talking bout who has more medals (Hawk fans will wanna talk that and not the glaring inconsistencies in Frankline game)

Facts are right now Buddy is hot and cold and nowhere near as consistently valuable to his team as Riewoldt. He isnt as good right now IMHO.

Sure we all love flashy match winners who point to the crowd after a goal yada yada yada...but Motlop at Port does that stuff to....so what?

Give me the guy who you know when he runs out there every week is gonna impact the game.....

Im a fan of Buddy...Im just amazed he plays such a dumb game given his attributes - Im glad he does.......btw...I guess I should say "keep up the good work Buddy"....

buddy kicked 2.1 on matthew scarlett

nick riewoldt kicked 1.1 on harry taylor

I saw Franklin time and again wrestle for marks tonight...he isnt and shouldnt be that sort of player IMHO......its just so easy for Lakes et al to pick him off/double team...yet he still does it?

I agree the delivery was lacking tonight but early the Hawks had enough of it and he still didnt look like gettin a score....

Buddy copped a raw deal tonight, Lake had hold of a fist full of jumper every time he tried to get near it but got away with it. The Hawks in general got the rough end of the stick actually.

The OP is correct to a point, Buddy has amazing physical attributes & is a nightmare when he runs around. When he plonks himself & wrestles it definitely evens up the contest for a defender.

On another note, did Hawthorn really recruit Josh Gibson as a big defender???? I thought they must have had another role in mind for him but after tonight they will hope that Gilham has an injury free year coz Gibson is as undersized as the snapper I threw back last week.

no tank?? when was the last time you saw riewoldt in a contest at half back, run through the middle to create an option, keep running into the 50 and be an option again....?? buddy does it a lot!!....he has a tank. when did riewoldt last have a run on the ball?? buddy was okay tonight. gave off 2 in the goal square, 4 shots of his own, had 2 certain free kicks inside 20m not given. get some more pace back into the side and get the ball in there a bit quicker by breaking the lines, and you will see him on the lead again making defenders look stupid. when the ball came in as slow as it did tonight, all your going to do is lead into walls of players, not space.

oh yes, buddy has a premiership and a coleman....nick has.....well he cried again last year....
