Doing nothing , be glad when he's on this thread
Enough injuries and Bell plays.

Enough injuries and it is likely Hanners is among them

We would be effing mad not to give Hanners a go if he's on SFA $-wise. I don't think he'd be in our best 22 but I also think he'd be better than anyone we currently have in our reserves side.

Worst case scenario he ends up injured (like Naismith) or isn't much good (like Bell).

He's a heart and soul player and would be another good mentor for the young'ns.

Could see the Cats taking that sort of risk with

A fit Hanners is comfortably best 22, it's the type of risk Geelong would take

A fit Bell is probably the 30+ player on the list, if we have to play him the season is shot anyway

We certainly could do worse, showed in rd 23 he still has something to offer and I wouldn't imagine he'd be asking a squillion a season.

I get that Hanners is a favourite of many and was a true warrior for us, but....

We moved him on at the end of 2018. And if whispers are to be believed his off field lifestyle, as well as his injuries were a factor in that decision. In his 4 seasons at the Saints he played a total of 18 games and never came close to achieving the regular output he had at the Swans.

He had a fine game, against us, in Round 23. He played a total of 3 games for the year. He had 30 disposals and 6 tackles in that match. Both career highs for him at the Saints.
It was his swansong, a give it all farewell.
He'll be 32 at the start of next season and has shown an inability to get on the ground.

Other than nostalgia I can see no reason for us to pick up Dan.

(In all likelihood the Bell discussion is irrelevant as I would expect him to be delisted in the next couple of days, so Hanners is competing for one of the limited spots on our list against players we hope can make a difference going forward).

I too didn't read much into his round 23 performance, particularly considering hardly any of our players - particularly our mids - forgot to turn up that day. Hanners was not the only Saint to have a field day in that match.

But when he has played he has looked better than some who are on our list, so it's a matter of comparison.

Obviously if it was a list management decision that was going to have ramifications from a salary/draft pick perspective, then you'd have to weigh up the pros and cons of recruiting him, and I agree that in that case, the cons would outweigh the pros.

But he'd be on peanuts as a rookie picked up for nothing, so all that needs to be weighed up is whether his spot on the list would prove more valuable than others' spots. And I think it most definitely would.

I just wish they would turn up to grand finals.

What a load

He beat our mid group as a collective , just an off day is making excuses per usual for the mid group

If it’s not trading rowbottom because we are not playing right according to you or Parker shouldn’t be in the mid group at all , only forward despite having one of his best years as captain.

What other saint had a field day?

Just crap talking imo

Cats will probably take stack and turn him to an all aus back flanker
I would back us in with him. It goes against popular opinion around here, but I saw a bit of him this year, he can go cold, but more often than not he was a wasted talent in the vfl. He would add some steel to us which we need.

Weird pivot. I'd have thought saying our mids didn't turn up in a game is a criticism, not an excuse, but however you want to read it.

It comes down to list spots.

We currently have one senior list spot available before list lodgements and need to delist at least 2 of Naismith, Reid, Bell or Ronke to open up the required 3 spots on our senior list for our minimum required draft selections.

If we need to promote McLean to the Senior List because he has been on the Rookie List too long that becomes 3 of the 4 out of contract senior listed players. So to bring in Hanners would possibly mean delisting all 4, which I can’t see the club doing in particular with Reid.

Our Rookie List currently has one open spot Hanners could take, two if we promote McLean. But I doubt we would look to use the Rookie List in that manner and would look to add either another ruck or small forward depending on our National Draft.
