Watching some robelinda compilations of run outs got me thinking, who would you pick as the games greatest fieldsman?

The good old days of ODI at its peak provided some classic moments that we'll never forget from the likes of Ponting and Rhodes.

Who would you pick as the greatest fieldsman the game has seen?

From what I've seen, its hard to split Ponting and Rhodes, though Rhodes was probably a bit quicker and a better catch from memory. Symonds was a beast later on as we'll.

Who do you think? Who's up and coming?

Is it Border? M. Waugh? Clarke even?

There's no feeling in the world like seeing those stumps rattle off your own arm!!!

I'd be up there, then probably Rhodes.

Back when I first started following cricket, Australia had blokes like Sheahan and Ross Edwards who were brilliant cover fieldsman.

And they had a pretty good slip cordon too, with Ian Chappell, Stacky, Greg Chappell, Walters in the slips and Mallett in the gully.

As an all-round fieldsman in any position, probably Ponting.
Viv right up there as well. Jonty was probably the best at the athletic save, but not the same as the others in the slips nor id he have the arm from the outfied.
Border was good in the slips, and dangerous at mid-wicket in a Viv-style role in limited overs games. Didn't move like Viv, Ponting or Jonty though; and like Jonty he wasn't as good on the longer throw.

Overall, Ponting.

Symonds and Jonty Rhodes were probably better ground fielders, but Punter was the best at hitting the stumps. He also moved into second slip when Mark Waugh retired and he was just as good as Junior had been.

Symonds and Ponting are the two best I've seen. Clarke was on pace to join them but isn't at their level.

Around 05-07 our ODI fielding team was amazing. Ponting, Symonds, Clarke, Hussey. Couldn't ask for much more.

Reckon Roger Harper went ok, couldn't bowl for shit.

I would pretty much agree. I recall that when he retired, either Wisden or Cricketer magazine saluted him as being the greatest fieldsman ever. His record as an all rounder at Test level is quite moderate, similar to one of his countrymen, Learie Constantine, from the 1930s. Many texts rate Conny as the game's greatest fieldsman of all time. He had the nickname "Electric Heels". Apparently he once threw the ball at the stumps, attempting a run out, and was able to scoot across to the other side of the pitch and collect the ball to have another attempt. If that's true, or possible, it's a great anecdote.

I think Rhodes is a little overhyped due to diving so often which whilst spectacular is often a sign of being unbalanced. He was certainly good though.

Best catch: Mark Waugh
Best throw: Andrew Symonds
Best allround fieldsman: Ricky Ponting

I love that one where Symonds fumbles, picks it up, takes a second to decide which middle stump is going to get broken in half, has the crack, middle stump gets knocked out of the ground. Zero celebration.

The man was such a brut.

You mean this one, I think:

My personal favourite:

Clive Llloyd was apparently lethal in the field when he was younger, Colin Bland is another who was before my time but was said to be an amazing fielder and one from left field would be a guy called Don O'Connor who played South Australia and Tassie who I remember as a superb fielder.

Nathan Coulter-Nile is up there with the best fast bowler fielders I've seen, will be great if he makes it into the national team at some stage.

Ok time to fess up. You're his manager aren't you? ;)

Haha. I rotate between he and Michael Beer. ;)

Seriously though, his run out of van der Merwe at the Furnace last season was the best I'd seen live.

The West Indies have produced some superb ground fielders and throwers over the years. There were three run-outs in the fourth innings of the tied test in 1960, and Viv Richards executed three (two were direct hits) in the 1975 WC final.
