Well most said that Warner would not be any good either given he was not even playing shield cricket when he was picked in the 20/20 side. I know he had better white ball form so it is a little different . It is basically about the left hand spin. He may well not play another test
i did consider the warner element, but from memory he'd played "decently" before he'd been selected (again, my memory is foggy) but he'd similarly performed well in short form before getting called up for the T20 side, and his test call up was still 2~ years after his short form debut.

for me it's just the lack of solid performances consistently in any of the formats, i'm sure he's a fine batter, but he's coming in at 8 - what is trivially an allrounders position, while lacking any success in any of his international games with the ball, as well as first class cricket in general.

There has been talk about Connelly for a few months. I was not totally shocked. Like I said it was the left arm spin. He replaced Murphy . It is unlikely he is in the squad for the test championship. They have taken a punt on a horses for courses selection.

i suppose it's cheques and balances, while i do concede they should be blooding youth (like they've been trying to re: konstas, connolly & mcsweeney, it's something that's been inconsistently done at best.) murphey was mostly inconsequential in the first test, but it's more indicative of how little smith likes to stray from his "known quantities" - he's bowled lyon a ton, same as starc and kuhnemann, but rarely bowled murphey, it was similar in the past, too. i think murphy likely deserved to be dropped, 1 wicket isn't outstanding, but having little consistency in his role leaves him with big question marks about their willingness to let go of the reins and let lyon's "successor" replace him.

hopefully this series and the upcoming matches vs. WI make them question the spot that marnus has, i just can't see him failing so consistently so often and still keeping his spot

Willingness to drop players who have had a long run in the test side goes back a long way. It is nothing new. Right now if they where replacing Lyon in the next test outside the sub continent then Kuhnemann is probably that guy anyway. I just see it as being worth a look.

As for Manus he is under the pump for sure but we generally back these guys in and it more often than not pays off. Not that it is right but it happens. Smith went a long time between hundreds as well. I can remember the same for Mark Taylor and Steve Waugh and others. It may not work all the time but backing the guys in has worked as well. Head was he whipping boy for a while as well.
For the record I would like to see him out of the side.

How long do they bother with Marnus?

another start with a limp and toothless dismissal
I doubt they change before next summer unless someone finishes the Shield season with a real bang but you never know. Maybe if he fails in the World Test Final he will miss the Windies tour.

Another ton for Smith. Talk of his demise was certainly premature.
can't think of a better player of spin, he's great

call me mean spirited but i think it's indicative of his overall lack of experience that cooper connolly has failed yet again with the bat (and not been bowled) despite "performing well" in the big bash.

i'm sure he's talented, but they've certainly jumped the gun with his selection and will invariably keep under performing moving forward until he's got actual, solid game time under his belt.

cooper connolly again, not performing (with the bat, while opening?). i once again just don't see him performing at the level.

I just hope that when he does the body of work he needs at Shield and DJ Trophy level and comes back he doesn't cop it from all and sundry again

i agree, i hope he does make it, but presently he’s so far out of his depth it’s not funny. he’s played 7 international games, and across all of them has made 11 runs and taken 1 wicket. it’s just a selection that boggles the mind.

1) why pick him as an opener? as far as i can tell in T20i’s he’s only batted in the tail, whereas he’s capitulated and contributed to the top order failings when he’s played up the order.

2) why not play fraser-mcgurk? he’s also ordinary, but at least he’d make a single run (probably).

3) he’s got an average of 14 with the bat and 51 with the ball across his (very limited) list a games, even worse in the international games.

World test championship once again highlighting just how poor test cricket batting has become.
To be fair, did either team have a warm up game? Add the unusual nature of the pitch, neither team are in home conditions, and the quality of both attacks, and you get this.

Entertaining, at least!

No they didn’t but I have been on this hill for a while. In my eyes the rise of 20/20 cricket has seen a decline in test batsman that can build an innings when conditions are against them.

On that general point, I agree 100%. I guess the factors I mentioned have contributed to a more extreme version of that for this match.
