Well both Bews and Ruggles can't be dropped, and this year Ruggles has looked better than Bews. Small defenders were always going to be an issue after Thurlow went down. They were going to be before he did.
Why can't they both be dropped?

Plenty of options down back.

Please don't say the two names I think you will....
Which are?

As an aside, where do I gain access to the raw data on kicks outs.

I'm interested as from the naked eye it appears the opposition get the ball out too easily from the kick in

Smedts and Cowan. Can't think of too many that are fit that could come in for small defence.

idk. You may have to pull a Baudolino and manually record them. Might be in Lana's HS stats sheet tomorrow. I don't know.

While I sort of agree, in a perfect best 22 world you would have Thurlow / S Selwood instead of Bews / Ruggles. But we don't have this option right now so we just have to go with what we have. Smedts for Bews is about the only other option we have at this point of time. Probably six of one, half dozen of the other.

I'd love to know how many off the opposition scores directly result from a kick out in comparison to the rest of the competition.

We miss Thurlow on kick outs.

Neither.

Guthrie, Kolodjashnij, Enright and Mackie are viable options to play on smalls.

Bews and Ruggles aren't up to scratch.

And I might sound like a broken record but Bartel taking kick outs again?

I was referring to opposition kick outs though.

Kolo is injured I thought. Agree on Bews. Not on Ruggles.

The thing is daz, he fumbles every single time he's given an opportunity.

He didn't get one at his feet, he got about three in a row at his feet - total hospital passed - and got smashed each time. Like every fringe player you could just feel him thinking, "there goes next week".

I do doubt his pace, and see that as potentially enough to lose him a career at AFL level, but he can be composed and he's tough as teak and obviously he is really respected.

As Daz said, if he'd been in the team regularly he would have taken that early shot. Fear constrains, confidence empowers...

I was wrong about two things.

I was wrong when I said that there is nothing Collingwood does that inherently makes them a difficult match-up. It is clear that there is a pattern emerging, moreso in the last year, with regard to how Collingwood plays us. The last two H&A losses and the NAB challenge loss have essentially happened in much the same way, suggesting that Bucks has figured Geelong out and has consecutively outcoached Scott.

Similarly, that NAB challenge match did matter more than I thought. It essentially laid down the blueprint of how Collingwood would beat us in the real stuff. Maybe the coaching stuff should have taken greater notice.

Collingwood's set-ups in the NAB Cup and on Saturday were completely different.

Iwas totally wrong about GWS - ( Western Sydney - No Mans LAND ) - thought theyd be a total white elephant - thought the only crew who would have made a quid out of them would have been the liquidators .

With the football and athletic talent theve got in their squad - if they were a big 4 Melbourne club with a massive following - getting plenty of home and away games at the MCG - theyd be $1.30 for the flag and bolt it in

As good as they are - an attractive game on paper against the Bulldogs - only 9000 were at the Showgrounds yesterday- what are they going to get if they ever become a rabble ( Brisbane Lions like )

Crowds are going to take time.
You only need to look at rugby numbers to see how few Sydney people go to sport.

Commercially they are fine. I heard their corporate sponsorships are completely sold out.
Now they might not get the same return for those sponsorships as we do but still...

Also they were pretty smart in building a smaller stadium. Far lower overheads.
