Re: Lonergan out - Hawkins in.

i really reckon bomber should let tomahawk have a good 5-6 games in the side with no pressure of getting dropped - let the kid play with no pressure and let him build some confidence

Re: At least Lonergan proved one thing last night

Nice dig, but in all seriousness Hodge plays the role his coach gives him. I doubt his effectiveness as a stopper or one-on-one defender but he's extremely good at playing a creative role as loose man in defence. It's not soft, it's what's best for the Hawks overall. Cats were able to limit him last night but let's see if they can repeat in Rd17.

Yeah, Come on lonergan why are you even in the team give someone good a go... we supposedly have all this depth... well lets use it geelong!!!!!:thumbsu:

Re: Lonergan out - Hawkins in.

They need to start blooding players. Either Lonergan or Stokes needs to be dropped to give Hogan a go. You can't wait until these guys get the 25 before they can get some game experience.

Obviously the word got around to Mackie and Mad Max. Seriously tho I agree, and I think it will happen later in the season when we have a few wins under the belt. Picking the best available 22 each week really doesn't make sense in either the short or long term (surely we learnt this from last year??).

I agree with the last few posts. I think we should be playing 1-2 young guys each week in an effort to get our youth the experience it needs. Grandfinal replay is probably not the best week to do this but I would consider doing it this week.

Re: At least Lonergan proved one thing last night

Yeah he wasn't playing on anyone and was very quiet in the first half, perhaps moved him onto someone to try to get him into the game. Enough of him though, we should use our brain power to figure out new ways to attack our maligned players!

Re: At least Lonergan proved one thing last night

Hodge actually played loose last night - with everyone else out or injured it was a concession we made to try and cover your forwardline.

As has been shown many times over - if the midfield runs (waltzes) downfield under no pressure - no defence is good enough.

Appreciated (obviously didn't enjoy) your new tactic to draw him out though - some very clever disposals from your midfield. (Running 45degree angle to goal, waiting for Hodge to move before disposing). I'm not sure if it would be anywhere near as effective in a game with more pressure in the midfield (playing Dew/Mitchell together in midfield might be good offensively, but they cannot shut down an opposing runner - where a lot of your dominance came from).

In a funny way, this 'reactionary' play was much more effective than playing the game on 'merit'.

Only on bigfooty can Geelong win a game and Varcoe and Lonergan still get bagged.

If Tommahawk played the same game most of Lonners haters would be saying how he showed signs.

The fact is Tommahawk is not ready and Lonergans performances in the NAB cup has put him to the top of the line.

Have a bit of faith in the bloke for gods sake.

This isnt about hating Loners. He isn't a horrible player, I just don't see him as Premership material. Great teams need imposing forwards, Mooney and Chapman are them, and Tomma at least has the presence and the potential. Loners though is just well... a decent player made better by a great midfield.

Can you imagine Geelong having two tall imposing forwards like the Hawks? Its not just the goal kicking and the presence guys like Franklin and Roughhead bring, but also the attention given to them. Tommahawk with a bunch of good AFL games under his belt would bring us a step closer to that.
