I am fairly sure that the AFL is the employer under the current contract scheme. Accordingly, a decision to vary, amend (or even) terminate is a decision for the AFL.

They're entitled to him. Stop holding him back
Seriously I don’t think Geelong have anything to do with this, this situation is all of Marra’s making, and seems to have started when he joined the boxing rink outside the club’s training program.

I think players with baggage don’t usually work out to well at other clubs, the baggage follows them. We put down rules for him, and he has ignored them, what makes other clubs think they will succeed.

The current contracts are tripartate: the player; the club; the AFL. The AFL effectively has veto over what the clubs might want to do.

My gut feel is we shopped him last year after he re-signed and he’s kicked up a stink about it. And his manager has done all this before with Smith. Probably has a deal lined up elsewhere and that club knows he’s quiet quit the Dogs but will be good to go again next year, won’t be worried about a few insta posts. The redemption arc over next pre-season is already written.

We really just need to get it sorted before the mid season draft.

We will want to know whether or not we have a vacant list spot by then.

But if the afl is resolute in Jamarra and his contract being untouchable they need to bring us some kind of alternative.

We already have one, I can't see anything happening between now and the mid-season draft regarding Jamarra that will open another.

If it was not for sure before I think Bevo's comments of "It is the hands of the AFL "guarantees he is never playing for us again and if it was up to the club he would be terminated. Like someone said before he is training sometimes to do the bare minimum to get paid.

Just purely from a fan's view all we want is as much success as we can get. This century is probably the most success period we have ever had but we only have one flag to show for it. Being in the position to get Bailey and Jamarra to the club as long term players would have gone along way to us winning another flag. To lose both is just so disappointing and even worst when we get peanuts for compensation.

I will be even more disappointed if Marra and his management know he is off somewhere else and will turn his mind to footy at another club and this year is just a sabbatical and he can do what he wants and still get pay. I have no respect for what Bailey did to us but at least if he was not injured last season he would have put in the effort to play well.

I wonder if a unique agreement could be reached whereby he is paid his normal salary, but it isn't actually within the salary cap and he is deemed ineligible for selection for the season.

The issue this very obviously brings up is regarding players that have season-long injuries (ACLs, achilles etc) and an argument could be made that these players could rightly also be moved into this ineligible list. This unique agreement would see that other than getting paid, ties are essentially cut and the player isn't permitted at the club, whereas injured players are able to use the club for it's rehabilitation facilities, trainers etc.

I'm mindful it's very messy but smarter minds than I could potentially put something like this together.
Why would the Bulldogs want to do this? we still pay him, can't play him and frees up salary cap room we can't use. Its the worst of all worlds

I hate to be that guy, but it’s always us huh?
Losing Dunkley was frustrating but manageable.
Losing Baz for minimum return was a set back.
To lose Jamarra for nothing would be a disaster.
Doesn’t sound like there is much the club could have done, but the fact of losing young elite talent like Jamarra and Baz for very little will really impact our future success. People will say at least we have Darcy, but that doesn’t make up for what is going out the door.

What does Bevo mean when he says Jamarra's future is the AFL's hands?

"At the moment the decision-making in regards to Marra's future and what that entails is significantly in the AFL's hands.

"We're waiting on them to do certain things and we're continually interacting with them and working through it to work out what's best for Marra."

Sounds like we want to sack him or suspend his pay, but are waiting for the AFL to tick off on it.
We tried this and afl won't let us.

Bevos tone around Jamarra seemed a little less supportive in this mornings presser, to say the least.
His latest social media escapades have been some sort of last straw to alot at the club. His return to play agreement that I've spoken about many times got about a week and a half deep before it fell over.
As it stands though his contract will stand and the dogs will make him sit out before trading marra to a club like cotton on.

WHY OPTIONS COULD BE LIMITED FOR JAMARRA
The options for Jamarra Ugle-Hagan appear limited if he departs the Western Bulldogs.

It’s become more likely Ugle-Hagan will exit Whitten Oval at the end of the season for a fresh start elsewhere as the former No. 1 pick battles complex personal issues.

Two list management sources indicated to foxfooty.com.au their clubs were unlikely to pursue the key forward if he were available. Geelong coach Chris Scott said on Channel 9 this week the Cats were “really open to dangerous conversations” surrounding Ugle-Hagan, who’s contracted at the Dogs for 2026, while Sydney and Brisbane have also been linked to the 23-year old.
New social media vision emerged this week of Ugle-Hagan out drinking while on a flexible training program. It’s unclear when he’ll be back at the Bulldogs and whether he’ll return to the field this season.

A Bulldogs spokesperson told foxfooty.com.au Ugle-Hagan’s welfare remains the priority, with the current arrangement seen as the best course of action to benefit him.

Bulldogs coach Luke Beveridge said Ugle-Hagan’s playing future was in the AFL’s hands amid calls for the club to stand him down.

“I try not to think about the social media side of things too much,” Beveridge said on Thursday.

“At the moment the decision-making in regards to Marra’s future and what that entails is significantly in the AFL’s hands.

“We’re waiting on them to do certain things and we’re continually interacting with them and working through it to work out what’s best for Marra.”

This myth from Geelong supporters that he was ever in any kind of Geelong zone refuses to die. The NGA zones were announced in February 2016 (when Jamarra was 13 years old), and we had the South-West region from it's inception (https://www.carltonfc.com.au/news/347386/blues-allocated-region-for-academy). Even with the zones from back in the day, Fitzroy had the Hampden League - the Warnambool area has never been a Geelong football club zoning region.

They feel entitled to him because they held a football clinic down that way when he was 12 years old.
They try to claim the South West because their local league clubs and their VFL side players out of here.

FWIW Marra's dad has had this to say after being quiet about the whole scenario. “Always trying to twist the narrative... delusional”. Take from that what you will.

From a financial point of view it’s the same as it’ll be regardless, but having him disassociated from the club officially makes it a lot easier when people from the club are asked about him - “He’s no longer a Bulldogs player so here’s the number to his manager.”

It’s clearly a bit of a distraction and I’d suggest from a club point of view that’s worth significantly more than the salary he’s paid.

Bevo’s tone towards Marra definitely shifted in today’s press conference.

I don’t think we benefit from wiping him completely just yet. We clearly aren’t getting any sort of value out of a trade this offseason.

I’d rule a line through him this season right now. Tell him & his management to go and get himself help over the coming months and stay away from the club entirely. Tell him that he needs to be right for day one of preseason and be ready to complete a full program.

The upside is that he comes back into form and we get a full preseason & season out of him next year. It’ll make him easier to trade out of contract if he has the work under his belt. If there’s any warning signs early on, we keep him away from the club entirely.
