The last game of Razor Ray's career

The 50 shouldn't have been paid. De Boer was in the middle of a group of players, Tadhg was getting close to make sure he could give it straight to him, because if he didn't it would have been a 50 anyway. Common sense should have prevailed.

You can convince yourself of anything if you try hard enough.

Kennelly was doing nothing more than holding up play to allow his defenders to get back. It was one of the more blatant examples of time wasting you'll see and penalised appropriately.

You know what? Yes, yes we were. We dominated the clearances, our spread was good, our skills were relatively clean, our goalkicking was pretty decent. Yeah, we were the ****ing better team today. A lot of games this year we have played pretty poorly but won anyway. Today, the team put in a bloody great effort, they played better than their opponents, and weren't rewarded.

Laughable stuff. You should try to move on for your own benefit.

Care to explain the Grundy/Malceski holding the ball decisions in your forward 50 compared to the Ballentyne non-decision? How about Ballantynes first goal? Or when Lower got tackled standing up made no effort whatsoever to get rid of it and the umpire blew for a ball up? Or when Lower punched Parker in the face (which started the brawl) after a great tackle and no free kick? Or when McPhee punched McGlynn in the face 3 times directly in front of the emergency umpire with no free kick, and then 10 seconds later a free kick to Ballantyne from a tiny jumper punch?

You're making most of this up. There were no real punches thrown at any stage.

If you're going reductio ad absurdum then yes, but if you're going to go down that line, Balla made initial contact by bumping Grundy when the ball was dead and five metres away so that should have been a free. Balla made contact, he had the first few swipes and then Grundy was penalised. It wasn't even like Balla was coy about it. He did everything right in front of the umpire.

LOL. Seriously? You're going to be pleased if the umpires start paying that?

The term "right in front of the umpire" is pertinent here. What the hell was Grundy thinking?

Don't be a sore loser, it makes you look pathetic.

Good advice for all those apoplectic Swans supporters.

It always amazes me how people see things one way and others see it another way. Why is is that opposing views always seem to coincide with who you support or who you like and dislike.

I never begrudge Freo winning a game. Quite like the way they play.

I do think there should be a consensus that the umpiring is shit. Yesterday was no exception. Freo got the rub but big deal. I'm used to that.

Sydney have a statistical history of being on the wrong end of the umpires. My guess is Freo wouldn't be far behind in that category.

I personally don't like seeing supporters of Sydney or Freo whining about umpires. For most part we are tough as nails and are better than this crap. West Coast I can understand and expect. Many Essendon supporters this year also seem to be cry babies.

As for Ray, well he is a clown. That's a given.

Ray is definitely a clown. He obviously loves the hate limelight that he attracts and believes he is a bigger part of the game than he actually is. He is a pure examination of little man syndrome.

Having said that, the standard of umpiring generally is pretty bad and has been all year. Picking out individual games and arguing that the umpires affected the result is pointless

Well said.

For the Swans supporters contributing to this thread....

Has highlighting the umpiring mistakes made you feel any better about the loss?

Just accept what you can't change and move on.

Freo supporters certainly acting like knobs on here.

Sydney got screwed yesterday pure and simple.

A lot of the frees were there but the rules were not consistently applied and equal incidents were not paid to Sydney. McPhee punched someone in the head just before the Ballantyne free but no free. A couple of minutes before the Kennelly 50 one of the freo players ran away from the contest after the free was given to Sydney, turned to the umpire said a few things then ran back to the mark before giving it to teh Sydney player. If the Kennelly one was 50 so should this have been. There were also not one but two 50m penalties that were at least 60m and took Freo well within scoring distance. It was giving Freo goals.

I was watching as an impartial and I thought the umpiring was more biased in this match then in the Lions match and that is saying something. At least the umpires in the Liosn match were the z grade team and not the supposed better umpires.

That is too harsh. Most of us as supporters have acknowledged that Sydney had the raw deal of umpiring decisions and 50/50s. We are just trying to object the view that Sydney only lost because of the umpires. No one has even mentioned that Fremantle played well, because we did play bloody well. It is too harsh, sure there where some bad decisions and non-decisions that where against the Swans favor. But that happens to at least one or two teams EVERY week. Sydney where never in-front for the entire match, that's saying something. I just think everything has been blown out of proportion, the umpiring was crap. Was it the sole purpose Sydney lost the game?

No.

Sydney have only themselves to blame for yesterday, every free that freo received was there end of story.

your memory of the Mcphee incident seems a little different to mine mcphee only started throwing them after mcglyn tried to throw him over the fence and mcglyn thru a few cheapies himself.

I just got home from Sydney, read every page in this thread.

I understand, and no supporter here will deny the fact that sometimes it goes your way, sometimes it's neutral, sometimes it goes against you, and sometimes it's actually well umpired.

Yesterday's display of umpiring, I felt, was fine from two of the umps who I hardly noticed. The fury shown at the ground and in this thread surmises the ineptitude that Ray displayed on numerous aforementioned times.

I "boganeered" myself yesterday by heading down to the umpires race a minute before the game ended and unleashed a tirade of vitriol upon Ray to soothe my rage. It helped, and I would do it again.

That said Freo played well and congratulations to them.

EDIT: Kudos to the person who decided to put the umpires race between the two member's stands.

Even Gerard Whateley was disgusted by the umpiring from this game as he specificially mentioned how bad it was in After the Bounce (and i have never heard him comment about the standard of umpiring on that show or AFL 360 before this).

Hopefully there will be talk of it On The Couch tonight, although with Roosy and Gerard being former Swans men perhaps they will avoid the topic in order to prevent the perception of bias.

Lol. No you're not.

I am able to watch the game objectively, even if my side is playing. This is what the replay reveals, I wasted a bit of time doing this, but what the hell. These are the facts, for goal scoring plays and other important moments. Watch the replay and dispute them. Any umpiring decisions not mentioned below were all correct.

Q1
  • Freo goal – pathetic free kick to Ballantyne
  • Sydney goal – normal play
  • Freo goal – from clear free kick for holding the ball, clear 50m, umpiring 100% correct
  • Sydney goal – 50/50 for the 50m penalty. Watched replay numerous times and very questionable whether Silvagni really went over the mark
  • Freo goal - from clear hands in the back + clear 50m penalty. Umpiring correct, apart from the extra 50m missed for another runner infringement.
  • Sydney goal - from normal play

Q2
  • Balla should have been pinged for clear holding the ball. But no scoring impact, apart from a behind we scrambled many minutes/plays later
  • Freo goal – good team play from Fyfe to running Pav to DeBoer
  • Sydney goal – Roberton kick intercepted. Maybe a push from Sydney player. Happy with umpiring. But if cheating would have been a push in the back.
  • Correct free kick to McGlynn, but he misses the easy set shot.
  • Freo goal – good tackle from Ibbo, chain of handballs and goal
  • Freo goal – Not sure on this one to Hill. But, it was maybe there if you look closely. Shaw holding on and maybe high. Not best angle from TV. I’d say 50/50, but can see why free paid.
  • Sydney coaches are tight arses with respect to takeaway coffee. Thanks for the insight, BT.
  • McPharlin probably pushes Reid in the back, but no free. Near 50m and boundary, about a 5% chance of Sydney goal.
  • Mayne gets a very poor decision in my opinion, player did not really try to dispose of ball, but gets pinged going over boundary. However, impact is nothing, as Mayne kicks it out on the full.
  • Freo goal – to Clark after initially bemusing decision, but replays show the holding the man which the umpire saw. Could group this into a 50/50 decision, not really wrong, but I'd probably be unhappy if I was a Swans fan.
  • Sydney – goals at end of quarter from normal play

Q3
  • Lady Gaga rules Sydney. Is possibly Mark Harvey in disguise.
  • Freo goal – Fyfe flukes one
  • Sydney goal – Free kick to Sydney against Silvagni. Clearly correct.
  • Sydney goal – nice LRT mark
  • Freo goal – one which Sydney will whinge about, but Richards dived on the ball, dragged it in. Happens all the time, maybe shitty rules, but the umpire was correct under the rules of the game.
  • Parker lays tackle over the line, which could have been given as a free but I'm happy it wasn't. McPhee starts a push and shove. Contrary to what people say, there was no free kick given from the melee. Umpires just let it go, and then played a free from play later on for a regulation high tackle. Resultant kick sees a goal to Palmer.
  • Freo goal – very soft to Balla from jumper punch. But throw some high contact in front of a midget umpire who likes to impose himself on a game, and you know you are risking something. Great play by Razor, but still a 50/50.
  • Freo goal – more flukey play from the lucky pick up and atrocious kicking skills of Fyfe to find Pavlich.
  • Nice kick in the gonads to Pav.
  • Correct free to Reid, but he hits the post.
  • Freo goal – good tap on from Mayne to MJ
  • Freo goal – Balla flukes one from the boundary line

Q4
  • Sydney goal – Free kick to Goodes. Correct decision
  • Some more iffy decisions, one to Griffin in ruck contest, one against Mayne in marking contest. Scoreboard impact is zero.
  • Sydney goal – dubious free kick to LRT for ducking head. Give it as 50/50. Can see why it was paid, similar to ones we got earlier.
  • Sydney goal – ******ed handball from Ibbo. If anyone was being paid off, it was Ibbotson, not the umpires.
  • Sydney goal – innocuous spoiling attempt and ROK gets 50/50 free, resulting in goal to Goodes from ROK kick.
  • Sydney goal – 50/50 whether Shaw throws it on boundary. Don’t really mind decision, but if umpires were cheating they would have pinged him. Great banana from McVeigh.
  • Clear 50m penalty from Kennealy, which maybe was 55m as per my pictures earlier in thread.
  • Freo goal – blatant throw, can’t argue decision.

Summary
  • 1 shocking goal to Ballantyne
  • 2 poor umpiring decisions in Freo’s forward line, neither of which result in scores.
  • 1 more poor umpiring decisions in Freo’s favour, which denied Sydney a minute chance of scoring from boundary line
  • 3-4 x 50/50 decisions going in each side's favour which resulted in goals.
  • Freo gets the favourable decisions go their way in opening 3 quarters, but only one real howler that impacted the scoreboard, and that was at start of match. Sydney gets their share of 50/50s in the final quarter to help them with their comeback.
  • Overall, we benefit from umpires more than Sydney, but nothing all that different to what happens to many sides each week.
  • Crowd noise and pathetic pro-Sydney commentary make umpiring seem more one-sided than it was.
  • Freo slightly win free kick count, 22-20, which probably doesn't mean much.
  • Umpires were not cheating.
  • Razor Ray is still a ****wit.

I don't think Roos will avoid it - Mike may try to steer clear of it as there was no mention of it during Mike & Robbo today (incidentally has Robbo mentioned it at all on 360?)

Gerard and Mike will probably let Roosy do the talking as I don't think either of them watched the game

Edit: spot on about the throw before the McVeigh goal (super goal) but I thought it was a throw by his teammate to him

In addition to my earlier post, does this ******** love himself or what?

Superb post, puts everything into perspective. And to see the Worst this morning say that the throw was a dubious call.... wow...

I'm sorry, are you amused by the dimensions of the ground or the estimates of where it was paid/where the mark was after the 50m? I don't think they're that massively out of whack with the screen captures?

I dont give a shit about the diagrams.

Simply laughing at the lengths Sydney fans will go to shy away from the fact that they were beaten by a better team and not robbed.

It's cringe worthy watching you plebs moan in here.
