Finally we have a past player whos son is coming up to draft age( noteably wally materas son). However it looks like West Coast will not be able to draft him under the father son rule because Gold Coast has so many concessions and can sign young 17 year olds. I for one think this is unfair and wish our club would start sticking up for ourselves and saying something to the afl. Imagine the uproar from geelong if they had of been unable to draft Ablett under this rule.

We will struggle to draft Wally Matera's son because Wally Matera only played 24 games for us. The benchmark is 100 games.

But sure, blame it on the Gold Coast concessions. I heard those concessions also caused swine flu.

We can still draft Wally Matera though, can't we? Get him through 3.5 years, meanwhile Brandon doesn't nominate for the draft, then once Wally is up to 100, we take Brandon in the next draft under the F/S rule, then BAM! Premiership.

It's just crazy enough to work...

Go the ultra tank route. Draft all of the parents of the country's best 13 year olds. Play them every week, no matter what, then come 2014 - wammo - 22 father sons in one draft

lol... you guys crack me up.

There was a sensationalized report in the west yesterday about Wally telling Bluey to stay away from his son. Basically I think Wally said it with a bit of tounge in cheek but the paper, who must want him to be drafted by either the Eagles or Fremantle jazzed it up to possibly try and deter the GC from looking at him.

From the sounds of it though I rekon Wally (like most WA parents, espeically past players) would prefer his son to play for us and to stay in WA. But would be still be happy for his son if he was drafted elsewhere in the country.

Also... looking at the father/son rule and how it was changed before we were able to draft the talented Morton. We would of had to use our second first round pick anyway, which would of been the pick we used on Ebert. Looking at the comparisson between the two Its not that much of a loss, especially when you consider who Mortons manager would of been.

So we really havent lost much in the father son stakes so far.

The rules didn't change at that point, we shouldn't have got Mitch Morton - it was an oversight that he slipped through to us (I think they counted pre-season games in Noel's tally or something similar)

Actually you may be right the father son rule didnt change before that draft so we could of picked him up with our last pick.... I was thinking we would of had to give up Ebert for him. As a 4th round pick he would of been an absolute steal and our midfield would of been very very strong picking up Masten Ebert and Morton in one hit.

Still you have to wonder if he would of caused dramas like his brother anyway?

btw I said the talented Morton brother, I meant Cale.

ahh ok, that makes me feel better about the whole situation then. And we ended up getting a bit more out of Carlton from him basically which is a good result.

Gee Richmonds trading is mind boggling... picking up Morton was an ok trade I guess even though there was still some talent past pick #35. But trading pick #19 in that draft for McMahon who is an ok mid but was still 24 at the time when they could of picked up Notte, Scooter, Ward, Maric, Pears, Otten ect..

Mixing re-building with topping up doesnt work.

Until 2007, the West Coast Eagles could select any player whose father had made 150 WAFL appearances for Claremont, East Perth, West Perth or Subiaco.

I still believe we were screwed...

We like all interstate teams had to have all FS elligable players play 150 games at WAFL level but the Vic clubs were allowed to have FS after 100 games at VFL level.

There should have been a Clause in the rule that states: A player traded for in the teams first season from another club could qualify his son under the FS rule as an Inaurgral player.
This rule would only allow all players that played a game in the First year (1987) to qualify as a FS pick once their child(en) comes of Draft age.

eg: Wally Matera and Murry Rances sons would have been elligable as FS picks.

All teams should have recieved this at their inception as they traded Draft picks for established players.

It would have been good to see a (Alex) Rance and (Brandon) Matera running around in the Eagles Jersey Again.

What was interesting was reading in the West that should a 17yr old be drafted to GC and NOT want to go, then GC could trade him next year. (Normally draftees have a 2 yr min contract whether rookie or not).
Should he want to stay in WA then surely it would be in Matera's interest to follow this path than have to take the chances with GC AND presumably Melb based teams next year in an open draft situation.:thumbsu:

Hmm it's such a complex setup with drafting, mainly because of 'state pride' we have in Aussie Rules. To me, all WA players should have the option of staying in WA if that's what they want.

The draft hurts us, make no mistake. Melbourne is a bigger city and once you go, you rarely come back. If you think about it, then in 22 years of competion, we have only had 3 interstate players become succesful (Wirra, Braun and Judd).

And then if you factor in the 'romanticism' of the name Matera, really he should be ours, or at the very least Freo's.

The national draft sucks for WA and SA who are proud football states and 'zonal' drafting should be implemented but hopefully the Free Angency system will help us out when it comes in.

RE Brandon Matera. Surely we can do some deal with Bluey. Does the man have a heart?

That's all well and good, but would you give the same option to each and every state?

We wouldn't have Brown, Waters, the Selwoods, Ebert, Houlihan, Rosa, Spangher, Shuey etc.

If Wally had played 7(or so) more games for South Fremantle, the dockers would be able to claim him under the F/S rule, so I don't know what you guys are whinging about
