I'm hoping we re-sign Tabs as well (sounds like we will) but I think there is also a misconception that our forward line operated far better with him in it than it did when he wasn't.

If you include the first two rounds into the equation our forward line scored slightly (almost negligible difference) more goals than it did without him. However excluding those first two rounds it actually scored more on average when he was out of the side. I don't think it's fair to say our forward line is more effective as a whole without Tabs but I also don't think it is fair to say with him it is far better either.

And I think that's where we stand. Tabs has earned more opportunities to play in 2018 but if he wants to secure the primary KPF role long term then we need him to bring the smalls into the game as well. Not much point trading in Matera if our primary KPF can't at least bring the ball to ground for him to crumb. It's great that he had the most contested marks average of any AFL player but we need to leverage that into far more goals by our forward line. Just like McCarthy and Kersten should have to play their roles better as 2nd and 3rd talls (need far more score involvements/goal assists) to retain their spots long term as well.

he did this in spades when he played. His major contribution wasn't even his contested marks, it was the massive reduction in opposition marks inside defensive 50 when he played, because unlike Kersten and McCarthy, he gave an aerial contest when the ball came in long.

He is without bought the best key forward we have, streets ahead of the rest in the things you want a key forward to do (i.e. create a contest in the forward line). McCarthy and Kersten are just not key forwards.

As I've posted before Tabs remains a work in progress. He'll be better next year than he was this year.

Realistically he's probably still 3 years from playing his best footy. He still needs to find more ways to influence the game like being a more physical presence and making decisions a little quicker with ball in hand but these will improve with more game time.

That’s what I want to see. Confidence in his team mates will help with that process.

This is good. Two years is about right. 1 year would have just been another reason for Tabs to be constantly looking over his shoulder which I suspect has not helped him a whole lot in his young career so far and he's hasn't proven enough to deserve more.

Looking forward to a continued steady improvement from here.
