I honestly don't get all that enraged about COLA. It gives Eddie the shits, so it cant be all bad, but it obviously an absolute joke just to give them more space in their cap, something which Sydney no longer needs.

The real estate thing is such a furphy too. yes it is more expensive to get in, but once you're in the capital growth is bigger = profit. An 20 year old doesn't need to be (or shouldn't be) buying a $2 million pad in Bondi any rate. I remember reading somewhere that Travis Boak up until a year or 2 ago was living in a place that he bought in Woodville West. WOODVILLE WEST, it's not even in the nice part of Woodville. It's not like he bought a place in Tennyson with a court, pool and sea views for his 21st birthday. Everything is relative.

The two biggest purchases for the overwhelming majority of people make in life is their house and their car. These are the two areas in Sydney that its is a shit load more expensive than Adelaide.

Depending on where you live and how much you use your car either for work and/or pleasure its pretty easy to rack up $100 worth of road tolls per week. In SA rego is more expensive than NSW but that's because compulsory third part is part of your rego - in NSW you have to buy private CTP. If your car is more than 3 years old you need to get it mechanically approved by a registered mechanic every 12 months - so that is an opportunity for gouging in Sydney.

You live anywhere within a 15km radius from the SCG and its a shit load more expensive than Adelaide to buy or rent a place.

I have no problem with COLA being paid - but paid directly by the AFL for Rookies and players on base contracts as per the schedules in the CBA 2012-16. I reckon COLA is fair enough for players who get paid up to $150k with a phase out up to $200k or $250k- but to earn $150k might only be paid to some players if they play all 25 games, if they play 0-5 they might only get $55k to $80k.

I'd like to agree, but I don't agree with limiting it only to base contracts (though I do agree they merit special attention, and rookies too)

How can Sydney compete when a superstar FA can live in a fine Toorak mansion in Melbourne, but can't do anything equivalent in Sydney?

I've looked at rental prices in Adelaide vs Sydney regularly; For ~$450pw I could have a tidy 2BR just off Rundle St, or a squat 1BR in an cruddy dark apartment block in Sydney CBD. The top end has disparity too.

You said playes should go and buy houses in cheaper further out suburbs to save $$. Then the chance is when you find that cheaper house you will have to pay road tolls on your drive to training to get to the SCG.

With respect, unless you have lived in Sin City, it is very hard to make assessments on the cost of living or the general ability to get around the place. The cities of Adelaide and Melbourne were planned and built on a nice square principle. If you roughly know the direction of where you need to head you can basically follow your nose and get there. This does not apply in Sydney.

I played a lot of cricket in my time there and Grade cricket in Sydney is a serious business. Our One Day Games started at 10.30 and finished at 6.00, normal protocol is that you arrive 1hr before the game for warm up.

We were drawn to play Hawkesbury at Richmond. I lived in Randwick not far from the SCG and played for Randwick. In order to get to Bensons Lane on time I left home at 7.30am and after a beer at the end of the game - got home at 9pm!

I loved Sydney, great place to live for a short time, couldn't live there forever. I think Australian Crawl summed it up best in the song "Beautiful People" - COLA is certainly required for both Sydney teams. Unlike us, supporters are not rusted on - they jump on when things are good and jump off just as quickly.
