Also let him know Purple Haze was Hendrix, Prince did Purple Rain.
It's cool that probably the 2 greatest rock guitarists of all time have a link to "our" colour

I can get behind Hendrix, but I think it is pretty difficult to get Prince in a top 10 of that list let alone at 2.

Eric Clapton rated him the best. (I don't remember where I read or heard that, but it went something along the lines of Clapton was asked how it felt to be the greatest living guitarist, to which he replied something like, Ask Prince) - I'm no muso, only a fan, so I'm not an expert by any stretch of the imagination.

I'm not an expert either, but fairly sure Prince is not technically outstanding and whilst the dude could clearly write a song, the guitar isn't what made him good.

van Halen
Clapton
Lukather

Off the top of my head who all had significant technical and songwriting ability whose music is not detachable from their guitar work. No doubt dozens I have forgotten about.

Excluding jazz and classical guitarists SRV ,Hendrix, Bb King, Freddie King, Albert King ,Peter Green, Garry Moore are fantastic . Robert Johnson and Chuck Berry, T BONE Walker great innovator's and song writers.
It's all in the eyes of the beholder though , it's so subjective.

In the ears you mean...

I agree, if you expand out of rock/metal then the list is even longer.

That quote has variously been attributed as having been said by a number of people about an even larger number of people. It's an urban myth.

As a guitarist that has played professionally for more than 30 years I would say Prince is a superb guitar player. He was a musical genius that could play any instrument but he was particularly expert at performing on guitar.

There exists a famous video of him performing "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" on stage at the George Harrison tribute concert with a who's who of famous guitar players and he steals the show from all of them. Its not just what he plays but how he plays it. He stays quietly out of the limelight until his cue then just goes bang and cuts everyone's heads off. Old school.

He could "throw down" with the best when it came to flash but its his quieter moments - performing songs like "Kiss" with just an electric guitar and his voice where he holds an audience in the palm of his hand effortlessly that impress me. His guitar playing is expert, understated but simply perfect for the role its playing. He makes it part of the act, makes it talk and uses it like a prop, uses it to make you laugh. That's true mastery to me not the soloing and fretboard gymnastics but he could do that stuff too.

Game, set and match 👍

whilst proficient playing at least 27 instruments and having a masterful command of a big vocal range Prince was primarily a band leading guitar player and when you consider his versatility/musicality/technical nous/showmanship/prolificity/emotional conveyance he's hendrix's successor bar none.

any seemingly credible arguments against are nitpicky and isolated from the bigger picture.

i say this with all due respect to the titanic (genre specific) guitar gods who Prince Rogers Nelson no doubt idolised and worshipped and winked at, but the 5 album run from "1999" in 1982 to "Sign 'O' The Times" in 1987 is basically music's version of Michael Jordan's Bull's double three-peat/6 Finals MVP' streak.

Hendrix successor is Stevie Ray Vaughan, no argument, Sttevie was technically brilliant.

Meanwhile, in the football media:

Fyfe earmarking Brayshaw as most likely future captain.

Just read that. Seemed pretty obvious since he’s been at the club he’s been an exceptional communicator and quality person. Seems to have an old head on young shoulders.

as a blues guitarist, I agree. taking everything else into account its not close though.

*ftr the story goes that early on Prince felt very threatened by SRV.

Hendrix was a blues guitarist +
SRV is Hendrix reincarnated. Have a look at SRV tearing up Voodoo child , Little Wing and Red house. If I knew how I would post SRV and Voodoo child on here.:)

I think it’s a bit unfair for The West to say that Logie is having a dig at Lyon. If a player gets asked about the current coach & preseason program of course they are going to be positive. What kind of professional wouldn’t be positive to the media about the club?

Ultimately they are just throwaway quotes that aren’t a serious statement about the past. Players save that for post-career books or interviews.

It’s the same with TTHD quotes players make about their teammates. What does anyone really expect someone like Fyfe to say about someone like Bewley?

Did you see who wrote the article? It was no surprise to me given it came from that bottom feeder.

Loving us having better articles from Ryan Daniels, Nathan Schmook and Duff but unfortunately we still have to endure Woodcock articles. Crossing fingers his contract expires soon and they don't renew it.

Staying on topic - none of these guys can play the guitar.

After all is said and done I’d just like to add that our club is linked to a certain Freo band which boasts not only the best frontman of all time, but in my opinion the best guitar player of all time.

My opinion is sort of along the lines of what you're saying. Prince was a superb guitarist but he had more edge to his ability to be a top performer on stage, he didn't need to be defined by his guitar playing ability despite it being great. For comparison I would say someone like John Mayer is a modern-day Prince in that regard. Most wouldn't acknowledge that he's actually a superb versatile guitarist, but that's okay - he doesn't really need to flex the fact. He has other things covered. The industry is littered with examples.

Also I think if you're really in or heavily invested in the industry, "Top" and "Best" guitarists don't exist. These established musicians themselves will be the first ones to say he and she is the best, they all love and appreciate one another. Go watch some of BB King's last shows and have a look at the array of talent that plays along-side him that he plucked from many genres.

You can’t reference it and not post it. A truly superb piece of music. Enjoy.
