Not sure where Barlow is getting his statistics for Freo from but they are well out of whack.

Plus the whole statistics rarely tell the whole story thing.

Andy has been best on ground a few times and he is an absolute workhorse. Those double and triple efforts are inspiring. It's the stuff he does that statistics don't really show that make him so valuable. I think he could poll quite well in the Brownlow. And there is a reason he is 13th or so in the coaches votes.

As for AA he absolutely deserves to be in the 40 man squad (assuming he continues as he has been). If he isn't, it will likely be because the selectors are more interested in names than creating a true reflection of who the best players have been this year. It's like the best 22 youngsters thread on the main board. Andy should be close to first picked but he isn't as flashy as others so some idiots have even left him out of the side altogether?!?

We'd have to offer him a massive salary to get him to contemplate leaving and then fork over at the trade table too.

I am thoroughly over burning good draft currency on players from other club. I don't care if we chuck 2nd+ downgrades or late picks on b22 types (Conca, Aish).

That boat has well and truly sailed imo and I hope Belly thinks the same. Plus I feel that Henry will be just as good and play the same role in a year or so. Some of the other Academy guys look to be similar also.

There was a season (2018) where Bolton was reportedly homesick and even came back to WA for a week or two (can’t find the article but remember reading and seeing a picture of him in Perth - might have been the mid season break). Any way he had injuries in 2018 and played mostly VFL. Was out of contract and that was the time for the club to strike. Didn’t seem to be much interest from either Freo or WC and signed a 1 year deal. Worked hard in the 2018/19 preseason and played quite well last year. Then Freo and WC showed interest but too late she cried. He is well settled with Richmond and won’t be going anywhere. Also signed a 2-year contract at end 2019 so has a year to run. Way too expensive and agree with Joao - not keen on burning good picks in trade. Player swap, downgrade a pick or pick swaps for decent players but Bolton would require a pick somewhere between our first and second so we will end up over paying.

I'll go into more detail in another thread but we have a new Shai Bolton being drafted from our NGA this year The criticisms of him are so similar to what I heard in Shai's draft year it is uncanny. Crossing fingers he can use his lightning speed to impact similarly.

I was talking about Bolton being picked for AA. Not getting traded to us.

Fremantle Dockers’ Mr Fixit - Adam Cerra

When conversations about Fremantle’s prospective inside midfielders arise, the smooth-moving and sublimely skilled Cerra is invariably one of the first few names mentioned.

Then follows the question: “Why don’t the Dockers play him through the middle more often?”

It’s a valid point.

Leading up to the 2017 draft, Cerra was routinely compared with Collingwood talisman Scott Pendlebury, largely because the pair have an ability to find space and slow down time the way few others can.

On top of that, Cerra uses the ball beautifully, rarely makes a bad decision, runs out games with vigour and has added roughly five kilos to his frame since joining Fremantle.

But in the year following the departures of line-breaking runners Brad Hill and Ed Langdon, the Dockers were left rifling through the cupboard for wingmen and Cerra was asked to step up, thus delaying his move to the coalface.

With minimal fuss, the 20-year-old has adapted superbly.

Before analysing Cerra’s season, it’s worth noting precisely how much his role has changed from 2019 to 2020.

According to Champion Data, Cerra spent 72 percent game time in defence during Ross Lyon’s last campaign at the helm, where his composure and kicking were considered assets.

Occasionally he would use his creativity across half-forward (21 percent game time); run through the midfield (six percent) or drift towards the wing (one percent).

But half-back was where the Eastern Ranges product predominantly plied his trade.

By contrast, Justin Longmuir - who ought to have very few concerns about the quality of Fremantle’s distribution from defence - has chosen to deploy Cerra through the middle, though not necessarily on ball.

Cerra now spends 82 percent game time playing either on the wing (63 percent) or in the engine room (19 percent) with short stints stationed back (10 percent) and forward (eight percent).

To occupy the wing, a deceptively tricky role, is one thing. To succeed with minimal prior experience is another, particularly in a climate plagued by uncertainty due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Classified by CD as a wingman, Cerra is rated ‘elite’ for tackles (4.1 per game), ‘above average’ for ranking points (86), ‘above average’ for kicking efficiency (70.2 percent) and ‘above average’ for clearances (1.6).

And while he isn’t usually heralded for his defensive traits, the Victorian is No.2 in the AFL among wingmen for tackles and pressure points (43.2 per game) this year.

The harshest of critics might suggest Cerra could win more of the ball (15.9 touchers per game, rated ‘average') and involve himself in more scoring chains (2.2 score involvements per game, rated ‘below average’).

That’s true, although Cerra is a third-year player learning his third new role as part of a team that hasn’t completely wrapped its head around a relatively foreign game plan.

Moreover, he looks comfortable.

So while it's tempting to suggest Cerra should be plonked in the centre-circle at the beginning, middle and end of every AFL match, the Dockers are onto a winner as it is.

Slowly and steadily, partially by design and partially out of necessity, Cerra is evolving into Fremantle's jack of all trades.

A Mr Fix-it of sorts, similar in some ways to Collingwood's Steele Sidebottom and North Melbourne's Shaun Higgins, capable of plugging holes wherever and whenever he's required.

Cerra has played in defence and impacted games; played forward and impacted games; played through the midfield and impacted games; and, as of this year, played on the wing and impacted games.

The consistency isn't quite there just yet, but consistency comes with experience.

At some stage, Fremantle could view Cerra as a midfielder first and utility second because his composure and vision in congestion separates him from many of his peers.

For now, the former No.5 selection is playing his part and playing it well and the Dockers are better for it.
