Anyone listen to the Open Mike episode with Trent Croad? Quite interesting. My gosh, he really didn’t want to come to the dockers. “Yellow and black blood in my veins” he said.
brereton told him “we’ll get you back in 2 years son” when he signed for us. A dark time in freo history indeed.

? He was with the Hawks yeah?

The point is We handed over pick 1 in a Superdraft for a guy who hated being here and never wanted to come. Watching the interview, the way he described the trade was like as if it was a prison sentence being handed down to him. How on earth did our list management team not pick up that vibe from him? And it appears the hawks promised him “we’ll get you home in a couple of years Trent. Just do this for us and we will get you back home in no time. Silly little Fremantle are giving us a massive opportunity to screw them over here so just bear with us for a couple of years”

Too bad that we didn't have the balls to get more from the return deal or hold him to contract, or at least shop him around.

Yeah it was a terrible trade. It's what happens when CEO's get involved in list management and when that CEO is part snake oil salesman.

Yeah it was a total marketing trade by Schwabby and cuddles. I’m not absolving the above d!ckheads but the Croad trade did help with our woeful membership numbers. I only remember because my family upgraded to seated memberships because of both Trent Croad and that we drafted Polak.

Time for the most controversial thing I've ever posted on BigFooty...

An online subscription to The West is currently worth it if you want to see the WA draft prospects in action. You pay for 4 weeks upfront ($28 -> $1/day), and can then cancel at any time. You can read Jordan McArdle's articles (which are good), watch some of the Colts games replayed and watch the u18 All Stars games.

I choose not to support the guy at the helm of The West but I think Jordan McArdle has been great this year covering the u18s and PSA.

Connolly was still with Hawthorn when the trade was done.

Well shiet, I guess it was all old mate Schwabby

edit - Jesus, apparently Cuddles instigated the Croad move while he was still at the Hawks.

Brown isn’t an instant in. But the fragility is Darcy/Lobb go down, touchwood, there’s nothing else. It’s good for forward/ruck stocks.

Meek hasn’t played a game. That’s all we have. Darcy, Lobb, Meek. Tabs can’t just be relied on to do it himself.

Agree, people are making pretty reductive arguments on this topic. Getting Brown is not a slight on Hogan or Lobb, competition for spots is a good thing. I rate Hogan to get back to the level he was at Melbourne and Lobb can be a great player if he works out his mental issues. Neither statement makes getting Brown not the right move as currently we have absolutely nothing if either get injured or out of form.

There is a salary cap. You can't pay 700k contracts to depth players.

When Tabs goes down Freo lose essentially any threat up forward. it is the most fragile and weakest area of our list "even with" all our best available. It's an issue that Brown would address. I also think knocking back trades with the expectation that all of Cerra, Brayshaw, Henry, Serong et al. are all guaranteed to project into elite players that will command high salary is a bit silly.

You also don't pay the injury cover 700k. You just can't do it without totally under-manning other position/s on the field. No team covers the loss of their number 1 KPF well because there simply isn't enough quality KPFs around and hence they cost a fortune.

This is leaving aside the idea that Brown would even entertain the idea of coming to fight for his place in the team, which I don't think he'd remotely consider unless we were his only option.

I don't think he would either and he will probably end up with another team that wants him more but I'm not against Freo asking the question if they are. I'm saying in a vacuum, getting Brown would be a positive and something we need quite badly atm. that's also dependent on if a reasonable salary can be offered and if Brown would be bothered coming here at all.

He said yellow and brown but get your point. I watched it as well and it really didn’t sit well.

No respect given to Fremantle. It made us look like fools - it was all part of their plan to get Luke Hodge. Thank God, we got McPharlin from the trade so it wasn’t as lopsided.

The most annoying thing was, we didn’t need another key position player. Pavlich, Brown and Jlo were the rare highlights of 2001. And if we were going to pick up Polak (another young KPP) with one of our first picks, it surely would have been perfect for us to use the other on Hodge or Judd! Anyway it’s yesterday’s news!

Freo got hooked, line and sinker. Fantastic ploy by Hawthorn at the time. Was ominous given Croad was in such bad form he didn’t play in 03 Finals. Hawks made a promise, in some way, to Croad later. Pick 1 was too good to ignore
Cannot believe we even entertained the idea of a pick 1 trade. Darkest days in Freo was 2001 season.
Know what’seven worse for the wound.. Tarrant did the same thing, yet we revitalised him as a CHB instead of a CHF In the end. BOTH players ended up in GFs after we traded back.

I’d rather just hear your views from the games that you see. If you don’t mind.
