This is interesting as it has been proposed before by media etc. My recollection is that the Dockers and Eagles were anti it. It reduces travel obviously, but increases time away from family etc. I would think it creates logistical difficulties with access to facilities, medicos etc, do you leave rehabbing players home or take them with you, do the players have access to reasonable recreation. The club is open to doing 3 and 4 game road trips NBL style to minimise travel impact 20201 and beyond

Basketball-style: Freo’s plan to minimise 2021 travel
Fremantle are keen to slash their travel miles next season by playing multiple away games in a row on basketball-style road trips.thewest.com.au
^Anyone got the text?
Is this a push to allow 2021 AFL fixturing to have consecutive away games?

Surely the time with family should be balanced out when they come back home for a block of games though right? This is interesting as it has been proposed before by media etc. My recollection is that the Dockers and Eagles were anti it. The club has obviously had the experience now, so be interesting to see what happens.
No I don’t believe so. When they are away for 1 game it is normally about 2.5 days I think. So 3 away games in total is 7.5 days. A 3 game road trip would be a minimum of 12 days I think.Surely the time with family should be balanced out when they come back home for a block of games though right?
Knowing the AFL a road trip for Freo would become as follows....play Hawthorn in Tassy, Gold Coast in Cairns and Melbourne at the MCG on a Sunday night followed by our first Friday night game in 5 years back in Perth. No way the AFL will be considerate of WA clubs ever.

FREMANTLE are keen to slash their travel miles next season by playing multiple away games in a row on basketball-style road trips. It comes after the hubs required for the coronavirusaffected 2020 season opened the football industry’s eyes to more flexible scheduling. Both WA clubs have traditionally alternated home and away fixtures, making 10 separate trips across the Nullarbor each regular season. Dockers chief executive Simon Garlicksaid COVID-19 had been a gamechanger when it came to fixture planning. “I think the concept of having two or three weeks away, and playing two or three away games on one stretch, is something that we’d certainly be open to as a club,” Garlick said. “One of the number of clear learnings from this year is that there’s a great deal of flexibility and it would be a shame I think to go back to an absolutely rigid fixture that we ran previous to the crisis.” Fremantle great Matthew PavlichPLAYERCARDSTARTSimon Garlick

PLAYERCARDENDholds the record for most kilometres flown by a player after playing his 353-game career based in Perth, while former Dockers coach Ross Lyon said earlier this year that moving to a roadtrip model could provide a boost to the WA clubs by slashing travel loads. The AFL is aiming to begin the 2021 season in the traditional late March slot. Asked how normal he expected next season to be, Garlick said: “That’s the $100 million question isn’t it.” “I think the approach we’ll be taking is certainly hoping for the best, but planning for the worst,” he said. “The reality of it is I think it’s relatively certain there’s not going to be any vaccine available by the time the season starts, on a broad level. “We’re certainly running a whole range of scenarios and plans from a financial perspective . “Just because there’s just so much uncertainty still attached to it all.” Meanwhile, Garlick confirmed Fremantle’s alignment with WAFL club Peel, which began in 2014 and has produced two premierships, would restart next year. The Thunder finished this season last without a win after their side was gutted by the AFL’s decision to ban AFL-listed players from playing in second-tier competitions due to COVID-19 precautions. “Our alignment with Peel will continue, we’re just working through the details on that given we had such a significant disruptive year that provided real challenges for Peel which were really regrettable,” Garlick said. Garlick said the Dockers had no current plans to introduce their own reserves team to the WAFL, given the current climate of likely cuts to list sizes and the additional cost. “The Peel arrangement is an ongoing arrangement where either party is to provide notice. It’s our intention, certainly for the short to medium term, to continue the relationship ,” he said.PLAYERCARDSTARTMatthew Pavlich
